ELECTRIC SCOOTER SAFETY GEAR: 10 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT TO KEEP YOU FREE FROM INJURIES

Why do you need self balancing scooter safety gear? Just watch these videos and you’ll see. Also be sure to visit the Motorcycle Page from the NTSB. (National Transportation Safety Board) They have the complete rundown on what you need to be safe. If you broke your hoverboard and need to fix it, click on that link. Maybe you just need a replacement battery for your hoverboard. Perhaps you’re looking for some scooter accessories, or you want to customize your hoverboard?

Hopefully you’re still able to focus. I know that it is not a fun thing to have to do, but it does work to save lives.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT SAFETY GEAR YOU NEED FOR A HOVERBOARD?

WIth the festive explosions of the New Year, certain states and cities have begun to implement required safety gear for electronic board riders.

From the CHP website in California :

The new law defines “electronically motorized board” as a wheeled device designed to be stood on and powered by electronic propulsion, going no more than 15 miles per hour.

This will include all of the current generation of hoverboards and self balancing electric scooters. (Yes, that means smart balancing boards, balance wheels, adult scooters, kid scooters, and just about any other combination of words that are equivalent.) In addition:

The electronically motorized boards can only be ridden on a highway with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less, or specific designated bikeways. The rider must be at least 16 years old and must wear a bicycle helmet.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO WEAR WHILE RIDING A HOVERBOARD

So, if you’re going to ride your hoverboard in public, (at least in California) you can’t do it on a road that has a speed limit of 35 MPH or greater.

I guess that means no cruising the 101 on it. Also, you need to be wearing a helmet. That’s the required safety gear. I’d also recommend
that you consider getting wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads to go with your helmet.

SO WHAT SAFETY GEAR SHOULD YOU GET?

HERE’S MY TOP 3 HELMETS TO WEAR WHILE HOVERBOARDING.

BONESHIELDZ BOMBER ADULT HELMET

First up there’s the BONEShieldz helmet for adults. It says high speed, low drag all over, with special air vents and exhaust diffusers.

TRIPLE 8 BRAINSAVER RUBBER HELMET WITH SWEAT-SAVER LINER

The Triple-8 Brain Saver Helmet, Get One

With a price starting at under $50, this is a excellent choice for a hoverboard helmet for kids. It’s seen thousands of riders through countless miles of skating, blading, scootering, biking, and now hoverboarding. It features a special “Sweatsaver” liner to reduce the odors from being worn.

Bonus Tip: If you decide to get this helmet, be aware that it runs a little tight. Your head is probably bigger than you think. (It’s cause of those brains inside, that’s why you’re reading this, right?) Take a measuring tape and starting at the center of your forehead, measure around your head. That measurement will tell you what size helmet you need to get.

  • XS 20.10 in – 20.50 in (51-52cm)
  • S 20.60 in – 21.30 in (52-54cm)
  • M 21.40 in – 22.00 in (54-56cm)
  • L 22.10 in – 22.90 in (56-58cm)
  • XL 23.00 in – 24.00 in (58-60cm)

The next helmet that I have today is:

GIRO SECTION HELMET – MATTE BLACK

The Giro Scooter Helmet

The perfect multi-sport helmet, you’ll be able to use this helmet across several different vehicles and sports. It’s blend of lightweight materials, traditional styling, and superior engineering give a helmet that “you won’t even realize it’s on.”

This helmet is a low profile fit, with a skull hugging grip.

Some of the sports and places people have used it include:

  • Urban commuting
  • Self balancing scooters
  • dirt jumping
  • trail-riding
  • skate parks
  • and many more.

SO YOU’VE PROTECTED YOUR HEAD WHILE RIDING A HOVERBOARD. WHAT’S NEXT?

Next on the list is the suggested smart balance wheel safety gear. That would be the pads and guards. Luckily, the usually come packaged together so you can sometimes get a good set of gear for a reduced price. Don’t forget that you need to get some proper hoverboard accessories, like carrying cases, chargers, and hoverboard skins.

WHY SHOULD I BUY THIS STUFF, I’M NOT GOING TO FALL?

How many of times have you seen a hoverboard video where “Dad” is trying out Jr’s Swagway that he got for Christmas. How many times did “Dad” wipe out? Chances are if you ride on a hoverboard, you’re going to fall. It’s just a limitation of the design. There’s no restraints to hold you in case you:

  • Hit a bump in the road.
  • Misjudge your momentum while trying to turn
  • Have to deal with a pedestrian suddenly getting in your way?

All of those are extremely likely to happen. It’s only a matter of time till it does. But hey, it’s your life, do what you want.

I’ll only say this:

Ask anyone who’s life has been saved by a helmet this question:

“Was the helmet worth how much it cost to buy it ?”
