Because of some limitations in the Amazon affiliate program, there aren’t any exact prices listed. This is because the price of the item might change between when the article was published and when the item might be purchased. I’m working on finding a better tool so that I can list the actual current prices, but until then, I will assign it one $ for every $20 in price. Something that’s $20 would be $.

Our hoverboards both support up to 264 lbs (though UL cert. is only for up to 220 lbs).  Therefore, although they’re not the greatest of the bunch, it may still be worth adding our boards into the comparison on that page.  Either just a couple call-to-action blurbs or actually include our products in the comparison.  We could stress that “if you weigh less than 264 lbs, these hoverboards from ScooterEra are the some of the sleekest and highest-quality on the market”.

SPARE 6.5″ WHEEL AND MOTOR FOR SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

If you’ve reached the point where your only option is to replace the wheel or motor on one side of your hoverboard, there’s not a lot of options available. Ebay is selling them, but they are running around $75 each. Amazon has two that are being sold for under $50. I’m sharing this one because of the quicker shipping time. This is the rubber tire and rim, along with a replacement motor.

GOLD REPLACEMENT HOVERBOARD SKIN AND FRAME

You can now show off your baller status with this GOLD CHROME shell for your hoverboard. For as innovative as self-balancing scooters have been, inside they are surprisingly simple. That simplicity is why so many of the different brands seem the same. (That, and the fact that all the companies copied and “borrowed” designs from each other) The steps to replace your hoverboard shell are unscrew all the screws (18 of them). Gently remove the outer casing. Watch out; there are wires connected to the piece of shell that you are removing. Once you have the insides exposed, unscrew the screws along the outside edge INSIDE the hoverboard. These are the screws that are holding the top of the hoverboard shell to your frame.

Now you should have the whole shell unscrewed, gently remove it and reverse these steps to install the new casing. Now, you should have a gold shell for your hoverboard. If you’re the DIY type, and you wanted a gold chrome hoverboard, this might be the best option for you. Especially since many of the hoverboard brands charge a premium for a gold hoverboard.

It seems that this happens with EVERY brand of hoverboard. So, how do you fix the scratches along the bottom of your self-balancing scooter? It’s easy…

There are a few products here offering differing levels of protection for your hoverboard. One of the first are these vinyl hoverboard stickers. These are an eight mil film that was originally used by car makers to protect their cars from flying rocks while driving. Now you can apply that same technology to your hoverboard.

REPLACEMENT BUMPERS

SELF BALANCING SCOOTER BUMPERS

These are the black rubber bumpers that help to protect your hoverboard from scratches and scrapes. The adhesive that glued them down isn’t a very good one, and they tend to get lost while riding. These are very easy to use. Just peel the old one off, gently scrape and remaining adhesive off. Then using an alcohol wipe clean the area where you are going to stick the new bumper. After it dries, stick your new bumper on, Voila!

PROTECTIVE SILICONE CASE FOR HOVERBOARDS

This is a brand new item that I just found online. It makes sense when you think about it. You can now find a silicone protective case for your hoverboard. If you’ve ever gotten a case for your phone, this is the same concept, only scaled up to fit a hoverboard. The case is stretched over the outside of the hoverboard, and small tabs clasp onto the screw holes on the bottom of the hoverboard. One of the neat things about the way that these are designed is that you get two cases. One for the left, and one for the right. Mix and match to find the perfect style for you.

There is a drawback to this case, though. It does only protect the top of the hoverboard. The bottom will still be scratched during use.

REPLACEMENT A/C ADAPTERS

Replacement chargers. I could write a whole post on them, but these are the things to look for.

  1. Look for the CE or UL logos on them. This means that it has passed certification tests that it should operate as expected. THIS IS IMPORTANT! With hoverboards having the problem of randomly catching on fire, you want to limit over-stressing the battery. A UL-certified charger for a hoverboard will do exactly that.
  2. Don’t buy a cheap one. The more expensive versions have better insulation and components, again so that it charges things more safely.

MASTER LIST OF HOVERBOARD USER MANUALS

TRYING TO FIND A USER MANUAL SUCKS

Hoverboard user manuals , who needs one?

All you do is turn it on and go, right?

Most of the time, that’s the case no big deal, nothing too difficult.

But what does that red blinky light mean?

WHY DOES MY HOVERBOARD HAVE AN ORANGE LIGHT WHEN I TRY TO CHARGE IT?

These are all issues that are covered in the different user manuals below.

I’ve tried to include as many of them as I can find.

If you find that you need a specific manual that I don’t have included below, shoot me a message and I’ll try to find it.

SWAGWAY X1 OWNER’S GUIDE

The user operations manual for the Swagway X1. It wasn’t too difficult to find, though there’s not a link to it from the page on Amazon (when it’s listed there), the official page , or the Target.com page (where it’s also sold.)

From the user manual:

  • When the low battery indicator turns on, get off your Swagway X1. The Swagway will not balance and you will fall.
  • Max slope of 30 degrees. Other places say that the max slope is only 10-15 degrees.
  • Does your Swagway pull to the left or right? You might need to recalibrate it. Inside are the instructions on How to Recalibrate the Swagway X1.

POWERBOARD BY HOVERBOARD USER’S MANUAL

The Powerboard hoverboard user manual is actually easy to find. While it may not be on their Amazon listing, it is listed on the official site:
thepowerboard.com.

From the instruction manual:

  • When the Powerboard battery drops below 10%, it will beep to remind you to charge it immediately.
  • The range decreases if you travel up/down slopes frequently.
  • The Powerboard user manual says that the top speed of the Powerboard is 6.5 MPH. Most other places say that it is 8 MPH.

RAZOR HOVERTRAX USER MANUAL

Another user manual that was easy to find, the Razor Hovertrax. You can find the Hovertrax at multiple retailers, though many have it only in their
online stores, Amazon, and also on the official Hovertrax page on the Razor site.

From the instructions:

  • You can tell that Razor has had to deal with a few lawsuits before. The manual is full of warnings and disclaimers. I’m sure they’ve had to
deal with people who suffer from P.E.B.K.A.C (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair). You can hurt yourself, be careful.
  • The Hovertrax will shake when the battery is below 5%. Charge it immediately. Draining the battery completely may damage the
    battery.
  • You should charge your Hovertrax immediately after riding, but for no more than 6 hours.

SOLOWHEEL HOVERTRAX OPERATIONS MANUAL

The Solowheel Hovertrax is the original self-balancing electric scooter. This is the version invented by the Inventist.com CEO, Shane Chen. He
then licensed the hoverboard patent to Razor scooters. This is the Solowheel user manual. You can buy a Solowheel Hovertrax from Brookstone.

Tips from the guidebook:

  • Fully charge your hoverboard before using for the first time.
  • The Solowheel Hovertrax is for indoor use only.
  • Do not turn your hoverboard on while it is in mid air.

IO HAWK SELF BALANCING SCOOTER INSTRUCTION MANUAL

One of the original self-balancing scooters that you could buy was the IO Hawk. Now it seems that you can find a hoverboard at every store, they were
one of the first companies to realize the potential that hoverboards had.

From the manual:

  • The Battery LED turns RED at 10% or less battery left.
  • See the picture on the right to see where you should place your foot when learning to ride a hoverboard.
  • Probably even more important than knowing how to mount your hoverboard is how to dismount it. Don’t step forward when getting off a hoverboard.
Instead, step backwards. Stepping forwards causes the board to want to go forwards.

What happens next?

BECAUSE THIS IS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS…

I’m going to be adding to this page whenever I find other hoverboard user manuals to post on here. These next links, while not true user manuals are
all the documentation that some hoverboards have. They’re shared here as both an archive and to be a convenience for people who own one of these
brands.

All of these guides are saved as PDFs. You can just right click on the link and then choose “Save As…” or you can click on the link and then in the PDF you right click and hit “Save As…”

If your hoverboard is acting funny, visit the hoverboard troubleshooting page, or maybe you
know what’s wrong and you just need to find some hoverboard replacement parts .

That’s it for this article. If you need a manual, or if you have one that I don’t have included on this page, contact me below and let me know.

Hoverboard Accessories

THE COOLEST HOVERBOARD ACCESSORIES

These are a few of the coolest scooter accessories and hoverboard safety gear to go with that new hoverboard that Santa brought you this Christmas. Now that hoverboards have been around for a few months there are beginning to be accessories available. Let’s see what I found.

SELF BALANCING SCOOTER ACCESSORIES: A HOVERBOARD CARRYING CASE

A carrying case for your hoverboard is that nice bit of extra care that will extend the life of your scooter immensely. Yes, it protects it from the elements. And yes, it hides it a bit so would-be thieves might not realize that you have something worth taking.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HOVERBOARD BAG?

Many of the bags and hoverboard carrying cases that you see on places like Amazon and EBay look exactly the same. There’s a few key points that you have to remember while you are shopping for a good carrying case.

  • Make sure that the bag can fit your hoverboard. Pay attention to these two critical measurements: wheel size and board length. The standard wheel sizes: 6.5″, 8″, and 10″. The board length is the how wide your hoverboard is. You can usually find the information online, or just use a tape measure.
  • Look for extra pockets on your bag, this way you can keep your charger and any other hoverboard accessories you might have.
  • The big difference between the $10 hoverboard carrying cases and the $50 cases? The $50 carrying case is fire resistant. In case of a fire the fire-resistant bag would help to contain any flames.

THERE’S THREE BASIC STYLES OF HOVERBOARD BACKPACKS.

These first bags look like they would be perfect for carrying your hoverboard. And they are, except one huge design flaw. I’m jumping ahead of myself. Let’s think of the different reasons that you would be using a bag for your hoverboard instead of riding it.

  1. You’re a regular commuter that uses your hoverboard to go to work each day. But your commute one day is cut short because your battery died.
  2. You’re riding your hoverboard and it starts to shake uncontrollably, you power cycle it and try riding it again. It still wobbles, I hope it’s not broken.
  3. This sucks, the weather report this morning said no rain today. Where did this hurricane come from?
Don't Buy This Self Balancing Bag

Don’t buy this bag. While it’s not a bad bag, there’s a huge flaw.

Any of these situations could happen at any time you’re riding. If it does, you’re stuck having to carry a 25 lb. lead weight with you. Hopefully it’s not very far. That leads me to the epic design flaw in most hoverboard carrying cases:

Make sure your hoverboard bag comes with some type of shoulder strap!

A Shoulder Strap for A Hoverboard Carrying Case

Don’t buy a hoverboard carrying case without these!

The second style of hoverboard bags have attachment points on either end of the bag so that you can attach a shoulder strap to the bag. This makes it much easier to carry for a long distance.

Check the Price On Amazon

The third type of hoverboard bag has backpack style straps. These let you carry it on one or both shoulder like a regular backpack. You’ll be grateful that you spent the $10 extra the first time you have to carry your hoverboard any type of distance.

the hoverboard backpack is the best way to carry a dead hoverboard

A backpack for a hoverboard is the best way to carry a hoverboard

This next bag is probably the best carrying case that you can get for your hoverboard. While it doesn’t have two straps to wear like a backpack, it does have wheels on the bottom. A handy strap allows you to drag the hoverboard behind you. As my girlfriend said, it’s for when your wheels need wheels. This bag is the perfect choice of a bag for people that would have difficulty carrying a 25 lb. object.

YOU’RE PROBABLY GOING TO WANT A REPLACEMENT CHARGER FOR YOUR HOVERBOARD

If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably need a new charger before you even get done reading this article. In my own case, it’s not that I mistreat my charger and it dies an inglorious death.

No, it’s strange shit that happens to me and my adapters.

I’ll be the type that gives my adapter to a fireman to use so that he can make an emergency defibrillator and zap somebody back to life. Or I’d walk unknowingly through a massive street fight between two ninjas clans.

There I would be at the opposite side of the street clothes in tatters, charger sliced to bits with no idea what just happened. Nobody sees ninjas.

Be careful when getting a replacement charger. Those exploding hoverboards you’ve heard about. It was most likely while the boards were charging.

Get a charger that is the proper voltage and then also the right current and plug sizes.

[content-egg module=Amazon template=item]
That’s all the time I have right now to share some scooter accessories with you. I’ll try to have a bunch more listed soon.

That’s all that I have right now for scooter accessories, but I’m always looking out for more parts and accessories. Speaking of parts, if you need replacement parts for your self-balancing scooter, be sure to visit that link. Or if you are having problems with your hoverboard, check out the repairs page for some ideas on how you can fix your hoverboard.

And now that you’re properly accessorized, let’s look at different ways to customize your hoverboard.

Hoverboard Charger

Hoverboards, also known as self-balancing electric scooters, are quickly becoming one of the popular forms of transport for kids and young adults alike. These two-wheeled inventions are now a common sight on sidewalks, in malls, and in most other places too. If the battery on your hoverboard has run out and you’re in need of a charger, nothing but the best will work.

There are many reasons why you might need a new charger or adapter, including moving to a new country with different power supply specifications, or the very simple, time-honored motive– the dog ate your old one. Whatever the reason, these are the ten best hoverboard battery chargers you can buy.

Warning: Always look at the power requirement of your board before you buy a charger – a large power differential could cause your charger to overheat, become a fire hazard, or even wreak havoc on your board’s internal circuitry.

FANCY BUYING 3-PRONG SELF BALANCING SCOOTER CHARGER

This is one of the best chargers you can get for your hoverboard, simply because it is universal. The adapter is made to fit the charging ports of hoverboards from all manufacturers, as long as they are of the 3-pin kind. The adapter comes with a unique perk – a LED indicator is present on the power brick. This light notifies you when charging has been completed, reducing the risk of your hoverboard overcharging or overheating. It has a year’s warranty too, which can be useful in case of any defects you spot while using it. It charges quickly, efficiently, and safely.

PHONELEX BATTERY CHARGER FOR SCOOTERS

Versatility is one of the prime benefits of the Phonelex charger for your self-balancing scooter. The company ships the charger with a plug that is designed to fit the sockets in your country. For example, the EU version of this adapter and charger has the standard square-pin design for its plug, whereas the US version has the flat plug pin design. It charges faster and better than most hoverboards’ factory default charger. The power brick is equipped with fuses to protect your board from overcharging, overloading, and short-circuiting. The shorter cable length on this unit is probably the only disadvantage in an otherwise great product!

BAA SHOP TWO WHEELS MINI SMART SELF BALANCING SCOOTER ADAPTER

BAA Shop has outdone itself with the adapter design on this unit. A common issue buyers of these chargers have is their lack of compatibility with certain hoverboard models. This particular adapter is designed to be universally compatible as long as your board has a 3-pin charging port. It features an indicator light that informs you of the charge status – red for charging and green for fully charged. It has a fast charge time and is quite safe to use. Take care not to overcharge with this one, though, as it can overheat if you leave it connected for too long.

EVAPLUS 42V 2A POWER ADAPTER POWERFAST 3-PRONG INLINE CONNECTOR

You won’t go wrong with the Evaplus Power Adapter for hoverboards and electric scooters. Remember to identify the power requirement of your hoverboard before you buy any chargers! If you have a 42V model, though, this adapter is universally compatible and allows for fast charging on the go if you can find a wall socket. The adapter tends to heat up during charging but is equipped with overheating, overcharging, overloading, and short-circuit protection. It also has a handy indicator light that glows red or green based on the status of the charge.

ARE HOVERBOARDS REAL?

The hoverboard that is now talked about is not the same one that you might envision in your mind. Today’s hoverboard with wheels is not the magical floating board that was made famous in “Back to the Future II.”

Instead, the hoverboard or self-balancing scooter as they are sometimes called is a two-wheeled skateboard-like device. It features a pair of wheels each with a motor attached and an axle with two-foot pads to stand upon. The rider stands on the pads, and as they lean forward or back, the engines start accelerating.

HOW MUCH ARE HOVERBOARDS?

The prices for a hoverboard vary wildly so exactly how much hoverboards are will depend on which one you buy and where you buy it.

Though, the price is from $250-1200, though some shops go as high as $1800. A higher price doesn’t mean that it is a better scooter to own, though.

Many of the models of hoverboard that are for sale come from the same maker; they just have different cases.  Find the cheapest hoverboards here.

WHERE CAN YOU BUY A HOVERBOARD?

There are many shops online, Craigslist, and even the local classified ads are full of sellers trying to get your attention. While you might be able to find a great deal on a hoverboard there, you should be sure that the vendor is reputable. Unless you are very familiar with a hoverboard, the chances are that you would not recognize the differences between the brands. You could get scammed into paying more than you should for the one you buy. Or even worse, end up with a defective self-balancing scooter and stuck with no warranty to help get it repaired.

WHAT’S THE BEST PLACE TO BUY A HOVERBOARD?

Hands down, you should buy your hoverboard on Amazon.com. There’s a reason that they are the number one online retailer. While it can be a pain to search sometimes (Though that’s why this site is here, to help pull the good stuff out of Amazon) they still have nearly everything that you could want to buy available there.

Not only do they sell almost every brand of scooter, but you can also see reviews and ask vendors questions. Plus, they allow you to return unused items for 30 days. There’s also the A-to-Z Guarantee to help cover you during the return process.

Good point, you said warranty…

HOW OFTEN DOES A HOVERBOARD BREAK?

Most of the hoverboards you can buy are well-built and can withstand some minor abuse. They have to if they’re going to be driven around by people. Having said that, there is some expensive technology crammed into a little space, so sometimes things break. Here’re some things that might damage your self-balancing scooter:

  • Using your self-balancing scooter in the rain
  • Taking your hoverboard off road
  • Using an electric scooter on rough ground, sand, mud, snow, jungles, grass
  • Overloading a hoverboard.

Those are just a few examples of some of the ways that you can damage your balance scooter.

IS IT HARD FOR KIDS TO LEARN TO RIDE AN ELECTRIC HOVERBOARD?

Learning how to ride a hoverboard is easy. At the top of the page, there’s a link to a guide that explains it in detail. Mostly, you find something sturdy to grab. It needs to be something large and firmly rooted. Don’t hold on to someone and try to ride it.

Grab your sturdy object and then stand on the board. Don’t try and ride it. Just stand there and get your balance. After about 1 min your body will adjust, and you should be able to try to start moving. Just scoot along for the first couple of minutes, moving along your sturdy object. A vehicle works awesome to grab.

By doing those steps above, you’ll be riding in no time. And you won’t fall as you’ve probably seen in the news.

For kids, they’ll figure it out. It’s neat to see just how fast they can pick it up.

ARE HOVERBOARDS SAFE FOR MY KIDS TO USE?

We’ve all seen the news reports or heard the story about hoverboards exploding or catching fire. Yes, there is a possibility that it could happen to your hoverboard. Anybody who tells you differently is wrong. But the chances of it happening are very slim, and even lower if you take some simple precautions. Be sure to see my article about hoverboard safety.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOVERBOARD FROM CATCHING ON FIRE.

The following things are taken from the California Highway Patrol’s hoverboard safety guide. Most of it is the standard “don’t be stupid” advice. Here’re the key points:

  • Don’t charge your hoverboard for extended periods of time. (More than 3-4 hrs) 1. The battery charges less efficiently the longer it is on the charger. 2. Lithium ion batteries can overheat if charging too long, this may make them reach a critical point where they can catch on fire.
  • Don’t allow your hoverboard to charge overnight.
  • If your battery becomes damaged, immediately place the device outside away from flammable materials and call 911.
  • Do the same if it is leaking, dripping, smoking, or talking to you. (just checking to see if you were paying attention)
  • Consider purchasing a replacement charger if yours doesn’t have a UL certified sticker on it.
  • Wear the proper safety gear when riding a powered electric board. That should include a helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, and kneepads. Here’s my advice on hoverboard safety gear.

If you’ve already purchased a hoverboard and feel that it is unsafe, Amazon is allowing you to get a refund for returning one purchased through them. You should have gotten an email from Amazon with the details if you are eligible. If you didn’t get the email, you could try contacting Amazon directly for help.

The other biggest piece of advice that I have seen is to replace the charger that came with your hoverboard with a higher quality, UL-certified charger. These detect when your hoverboard battery is nearing capacity and reduce the charge going to the battery. This keeps it from overheating. Thus it stays safer.

Are Hoverboards Safe

Over the holiday season, and during summer, hoverboards are some of the most utilized sporting accessories. It is because this is one of the most liked outdoor activities. You will find lots of people enjoying their time on the roads, city pavements, walkways, and every other space they find. However, as you enjoy your time, it is important to understand that safety is something that you cannot take lightly. According to the Consumer Safety Commission, serious injuries can occur due to lack of precautionary measures. If you are planning to hit the road with your hoverboards, you need to understand some of the tricks and hacks that will keep you safe throughout the sessions. Here are some hoverboard safety tips for you.

What exactly is a hoverboard?

The term ‘hoverboard’ was first mentioned in the film ‘Back to the future’ in 1985. It was represented as an artificially levitating transportation board that would float a few feet above the ground. The modern iteration of the hoverboard, however, is a misnomer. The actual device being discussed is actually called the ‘self-balancing scooter’ which uses wheels to “float” itself. A self-balancing scooter consists of a lateral arrangement of two wheels connected by a board, on which the rider stands, and steers or navigates. The acceleration, deceleration and turning are controlled by two pressure sensitive pads underneath the rider’s feet. In this article, the terms hoverboard and self-balancing scooter will be used interchangeably.

Hoverboard dangers

The hoverboard can be broadly described as a self-balancing scooter  which is powered by li-ion battery packs, which pose a potential safety hazard. There have been instances of faulty batteries, which have exploded, caught fire or short circuited. Case of spontaneous combustion during charging have led to extensive damage to homes as well.

The most obvious cause of harm originating from this device is the extremely high danger of falling over or colliding into objects, which is a frequent occurrence for inexperienced or amatuer riders. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 10 mph (16 km/h), so significant damage could be inflicted in case of a fall at high speeds. As is the case with all modes of transportation, traffic accidents are also likely when using the hoverboard, so using proper safety equipment, such as a helmet, knee-pads and gloves is of paramount importance. According to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, hoverboard-related combustions caused more than $2 million in property damages around the US.

WHY DO HOVERBOARDS EXPLODE?

The most common issue with hoverboards seems to lie with the batteries used in hoverboards. The batteries used are the lithium ion batteries, which are often used in cell phones and laptops as well. However, the liquid contained inside these batteries is highly flammable, which poses a threat. Hoverboards that are currently available on the market have been produced in various nameless Chinese factories and, since these factories often do not adhere to any international safety standards pertaining to such devices, these hoverboards can become potentially dangerous.

Another reason why these batteries are causing hoverboards to be dangerous and highly flammable is the fact that these batteries have a tendency to explode if they are bumped around a lot. Any individual, unless extremely skilled at hoverboarding, is likely to bash into walls and other objects. Because driving thee devices takes a significant amount of practice, amateurs often bump these devices around, increasing the risk of such an accident.

Most fires have been reported to occur while these hoverboards are charging. This is specifically because Lithium ion batteries do not accept overcharging, while people may tend to overcharge them. Chargers for hoverboards include a feature of a cut-off mechanism that detects when the battery have been fully charged and then automatically stops the charging, in order to prevent any damage to the batteries or fire. Unfortunately, defects in the cut-off mechanism are leading to batteries getting overcharged and catching fire. These defects usually occur because these products are usually not tested or inspected fully, to adhere to international standard, and thus can cause damages.

HOW TO PREVENT HOVERBOARD FIRES?

If you already have a hoverboard, you must take a few precautionary measures to try to prevent it from catching fire. According to CPSC, it is wise to allow the toy an hour to cool down after use before plugging it in for charging. It takes approximately two hours to charge fully. It is best not to leave the toy unattended while it’s charging. Monitor the charging at least while charging the smart balance wheel for the first time. You should never charge the hoverboard overnight or longer than is stated in the manual. It is best to keep the toy away from flammable objects and to unplug its charger from the board as well as the outlet as soon as it’s fully charged.

If you wish to invest in a good quality charger, it is a good idea to opt for the external universal charger. This will not prevent the hoverboard catching fire due to damage to its battery but it would help to avoid destructive fires, the kind that result from overcharging.

Another important precautionary measure is to minimize the impact of the toy in order to try to reduce the chances of the battery getting damaged. It is best to avoid riding it near hard or rough surfaces such as rocks or walls. It is important to be careful while carrying the hoverboard as dropping it could lead to its battery getting damaged as well. Dropping it or bumping into hard surfaces or sharp objects damage the battery pack’s separator sheets, which in turn causes the fire. Though fires usually result from overcharging and not by colliding into something or dropping your hoverboard but if it’s best to be careful especially if the board’s construction does not seem that solid.

HOVERBOARD SAFETY CERTIFICATION: THE UL2272

For several months, it looked like self-balancing scooters were doomed to be a one-time fad, like so many other products. Places like Amazon were telling people to “throw their hoverboards away.” Retailers removed them from their shelves. Left and right you began to see new articles about the latest place to ban them from being used.

Many assumed that the hoverboard fad was over…

Soon after the CPSC published the safety advisory recommending that people not purchase hoverboards, it released a set of safety standards for hoverboards. UL2272 is the new standard for Self Balancing Scooters Electrical Systems. Some of the things covered by these standards include:

  • The construction:
    • Metallic and non-metallic parts
    • Enclosures
    • Wiring
    • Insulation and Protective circuits
  • Electrical tests
    • Short Circuit test
    • Temperature test
    • Overcharge test
  • Mechanical tests
    • Vibration tests
    • Shock tests
    • Crush tests
    • Overload tests
  • Environmental tests
    • Water exposure tests
    • Thermal cycling tests

This is just a short list of some of the items in the standards, for a complete overview of the testing, see the UL Hoverboard page. Prior to these standards being released, anyone could throw together a piece of plastic for you to stand on, attach a couple of wheels, throw in motor and a battery, and then try to sell it as the greatest hoverboard in the world. And many people did exactly that.

Hoverboard safety tips

BUY AN AUTHENTIC AND SAFE HOVERBOARD

Take the necessary time to determine the hoverboard’s authenticity – It can be extremely hard to determine a genuine hoverboard from a fake one. Fake products often look identical to unsuspecting buyers. (It’s even worse with hoverboards since so many brands are visually identical, but component-wise entirely different models.)

You want to avoid fake hoverboards because lower quality self-balancing scooters usually have batteries that are also lower quality. The primary cause of self-balancing scooter fires were faulty batteries that failed and experienced rapid discharge.

Unless you take the time to open a hoverboards case, you’ll never be positive that you’ve gotten a quality battery. If the vendor doesn’t mention the brand, chances are it’s inferior. Samsung and LG are both considered excellent batteries and have had very few failures.

So how do you get the best hoverboard with a battery that’s safe?

You want to buy your hoverboard from reputable brands and marketplaces. While Fred the Fence may be able to get you a “sweet deal” for a hoverboard, he’s trying to score big bucks off of you.

Some of the most notable safe hoverboard brands are Swagtron, the Powerboard, Razor Hovertrax, StreetSaw, and Jetson to name but a few. If you make your purchase from giant online marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay, make sure that the product is sold directly by its maker and not a 3rd party seller.

FOLLOW THE HOVERBOARD MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTIONS.

It may not seem all that earth shattering of a revelation, but the manufacturer’s instructions are there to help you to use their product safely. For kids, this is especially important because they often lack the experience to know that they could become severely injured in an accident.

One of the critical things to supervise with your children and hoverboards is recharging and storing the hoverboard. It’s during the charge cycle that a majority of the battery malfunctions occur. Make sure to keep the hoverboard away from any flammable materials.

Also when charging your hoverboard, do so immediately after using is and for only a few hours at a time.

DO NOT leave it to charge for more than 4 hours. After a lithium-ion battery is fully charged, there is a slightly higher likelihood of an accident occurring. Always use the charger that you received when you bought your hoverboard. Other chargers may seem identical, but there’s no guarantee, and they might just be different enough to cause an accident.

USE PROPER HOVERBOARD SAFETY GEAR

Use the proper safety gear when riding a hoverboard. Have you seen the videos from last Christmas when hoverboards were the newest craze, and everybody was desperate to own one? Did you also see the hoverboard videos where people fell off of the not-so-self-balancing scooter and required a trip to the Emergency Room? There were hundreds of hoverboard accident videos on YouTube to watch and be glad that it wasn’t happening to you.

If only they had taken the time to learn how to ride a hoverboard

Granted most of the accident victims were products of their unpreparedness blended with beginner hoverboard-riding skills; you can lose your balance in a second. Save a trip to the ER, and use the proper personal protective gear for riding hoverboards. At a minimum, you should have a decent helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads. You may also want to consider wearing wrist guards and booty pads. Older riders should watch out since they are more likely to hurt their wrists trying to stop yourself from falling.

At a minimum, you should have a decent helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads. You may also want to consider wearing wrist guards and booty pads. Older riders should watch out since they are more likely to injure themselves when attempting to stop a fall than children or teenagers. The last thing you want is to break a bone or injure yourself in some other manner.

DON’T ABUSE YOUR HOVERBOARD

Most hoverboards like long walks to watch the sunset, followed by ice cream and a good movie.

Just seeing if you were awake.

Like any piece of equipment, if you take care of it, it will take care of you, and hoverboards are no exception. Hold on a second, actually; hoverboards are an exception. Remember earlier where I mentioned that the batteries were one of the biggest causes of hoverboard fires? There were several cases where superficial damage to the hoverboard’s outer case caused fires. What wasn’t apparent, was that the damage to the case had also damaged the battery.  At some point, the damage caused the chemicals inside the battery to become exposed to oxygen, starting a fire.

Remember earlier where I mentioned that the batteries were one of the biggest causes of hoverboard fires? There were several cases where what appeared to be superficial damage to the hoverboard’s outer case, was actually much more substantial and was believed fo be the cause of several fires. At some point, the battery was damaged, causing chemicals inside the battery to become exposed to oxygen, starting a fire.

In this video, a guy takes a knife and stabs it into the battery. While the battery he is using is a cell phone battery, it’s the same type of battery as the one inside a hoverboard. Only a hoverboard has 18 cells in its battery.  A single battery failing catches the remaining cells on fire. When that happens it almost sounds like firecrackers exploding, only the shooting flames are much more vigorous and have caught multiple homes on fire.

Imagine a fire eighteen times bigger than the one in the video.

NEVER CHARGE A HOVERBOARD OVERNIGHT

We have become accustomed to charging our electronic devices overnight while we sleep.  Why not? It works out awesome that way. We both get recharged.

Don’t do this with your hoverboard.

Generally, most of these products usually require about 2 to 4 hours for their batteries to be fully charged. As it nears a full charge, the battery reduces the amount of energy it absorbs to a trickle. It stays at a nearly full charge until it’s almost full when it suddenly begins absorbing lots of energy again. Reaching the critical threshold, the battery overcharges. It attempts to shed the excess energy it consumed and returned to its full state.

Want to guess how it reduces its energy level?

Did you say rapid discharge?

Make sure your child understands the need to remove the hoverboard from the charger after a few hours. The CPSC also recommends that you recharge your hoverboard immediately after use. Doing so will make it more stable when it’s not in use.

Also, try to be aware of the hoverboard’s surroundings when charging. You don’t want to have it next to anything flammable.

CALIBRATE YOUR HOVERBOARD

Calibrate your hoverboard every two or three uses. Calibration only takes a second, and it will make your hoverboard ride smoother and steadier. It should be the first step anytime your hoverboard is performing poorly.

It can also help stop the hoverboard shaking uncontrollably, or where one side turns, but the other doesn’t, or if the LEDs on your hoverboard blink all the time.

All you need is a level surface and powering it on and off, and you’ll be ready to go again in no time. Just follow this link if you’d like to learn more about calibration.

If your child is under 50 lbs. hoverboards may not work properly for them.  Most hoverboards are designed to work for riders between 50-220lbs. They may not weigh enough to control it properly.

GET ON/OFF THE HOVERBOARD PROPERLY

Get on and off your hoverboard in the proper way. It’s a little counter-intuitive, but you want to step forward onto your hoverboard when mounting it.

Place one foot in the middle of it and then assume as wide a stance as you can on the foot pads. You want your feet to be centered front-to-back with equal amounts of toe and heel hanging off.

When it is time to get off your hoverboards, don’t dismount by stepping forward. You’ll shift your weight and instead of stepping off, you’ll cause your hoverboard to propel itself forward, right underneath where you’re trying to step.

Instead, step off the hoverboard backwards, like you were stepping down from a ladder or stepstool. This will prevent any hoverboard accidents from happening.

CHOOSE WHERE TO RIDE

Choosing where to ride

Everyone knows that there are no designated places where you can use a hoverboard. You can try them at the parking, neighborhoods, or any other place where you can use skateboards and ride a bike. Some cities have laws that regulate where you can go riding. For instance, in New York City, and salt lake city, using these items on busy streets has been banned. However, many people can still be spotted on the sidewalks and even on major streets even with the ban in place.

The main reason why you should be careful when choosing where to ride is because some locations pose a higher risk than others. For instance, if you are sliding through places with heavy motor vehicle traffic, you need to consider the risk of getting hit by a car, or crashing into stationary objects. Just like when riding a self balancing scooter, you could injure yourself by ramming into a tree, a wall, a fence, or any other object. Professionals know how to avoid such objects and therefore, they may be after when enjoying their time at such locations. For learners and amateurs, it is better to choose a location that requires less skills to avoid these dangerous objects.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD, PRACTICE

Before you hit the road, practice

You may be excited to hit the sidewalks and try out your new skateboards. However, studies have shown that it is not a good idea to do that even before you understand the safety standards, and get the right safety gear. If you are new to this sport, the best thing you can do is to start by learning the basics. You can not learn the basics by going straight to the most dangerous locations. Instead of that, find some space at home and learn to balance, move, turn, and every other task that is related to it. As time goes by, you will notice that you have begun mastering the tricks and so, you will be much safer when you get out.

The body parts that do not go well with concrete surfaces when using a hoverboard include the head, elbows, and knees. This is the reason you need to wear the right protective safety gear before you head out. However, in case you are not in a position to wear such gear, you have to stay within your practice sessions until you are accomplished enough to go out. Those skillful and experienced people you see on the streets did not start where they are. They had to grow gradually in the sport and that is the reason they have stayed away from injuries.

WHAT TO DO WHEN RIDING AT NIGHT

What to do when riding at night

Although a hoverboard has lights, they are not as visible as those of a vehicle or motor bike. These lights are low and dim. Sometimes, it might be difficult for someone to notice them unless they are keenly watching. This is the reason you should be more cautious when riding at night. Just because you have switched the lights on, and you can see where you are going does not mean that you are completely safe. Experts often ask people to wear whites if they have to ride on their hoverboards at night.

In addition to that, you should wear a helmet, and light up shoes. The reason you need such shoes is that they have small lithium ion batteries to power them throughout the ride. These batteries are safer than any other option that you are likely to find out there because they similar to the ones found on mobile phones and computers. After charging the battery, it not only lights up the shoe but it also illuminates the sole which keeps flashing and changing colors to attract more attention than those shoes that only use one color.

DESIST FROM CHARGING HOVERBOARDS OVERNIGHT

Desist from charging hoverboards overnight

You may be so eager to use your hoverboards on Saturday and so, you think that charging them throughout on a Friday night is the best way to ensure that you have enough energy. However, experts have pointed out that this is not a good idea. One thing that you need to know is that if they charge under such conditions, it only means that nobody is monitoring the process. Since most of them require just four hours to fully charge, there is likely to be a fire outbreak if you leave them plugged in for long. The National Fire Protection Association has confirmed that many fire accidents have been caused by this.

To avoid fire and explosions, it is important to ensure that the hoverboards only charge during the time when you can adequately monitor them. Some people also prefer to charge these items even before the current charge is exhausted just to ensure that there is enough energy for the next use. It is the same thing that they do with their mobile phones and computers.

Which Hoverboards are safe?

Apart from taking all these safety precautions, you should also ensure that you buy the right hoverboards.

When looking to purchase a hoverboard, it is ideal that you purchase it from a retail shop you know and fully trust. The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised against purchasing hoverboards from unknown websites, online stores or mall Kiosks as none of these seem to know much about the product itself and mere retailers of the product. When buying the hoverboard, think if you’ll be able to get in contact with the seller if a problem was to occur with the board. If you believe that the seller won’t be available or difficult to get in touch with, it is better not to buy from them. In cases where you feel the retailer seems a bit sketchy, it’s better to trust your gut and move on to a different retailer.

While purchasing this device, be sure to check for the certification labels present on the packaging. If ETL or UL is emblem on the package, product or on the user’s manual, it is an indication of the fact that the product has been inspected thoroughly by an independent 3rd party or laboratory and has passed the safety test. However, there are a few sketchy manufacturers who try to get a fake emblem. These fakes sometimes produce emblems that do not actually exist, or may be representation of an internal, self-monitored inspection which is usually biased. This is rare as UL is currently working closely with interpol, US Customs and others in order to try to try to catch these fakes before they reach the consumers.

It is essential for the consumers to keep in mind that the appearance of the certification label or an emblem does not mean that the product completely rules out counterfeits, and is perfectly safe with zero risk of malfunction, but the absence of these certification labels indicates that the manufacturer is not concerned with the safety of the consumer.

Target and Amazon have started selling hoverboards that have the certification for the charger and the batteries but this does not mean that the entire hoverboard is also under certification. In fact, up till now there has not been a single entire product that has been certified by UI. It was also revealed that certain factories say they make use of Samsung batteries but these batteries actually are fake.

No hoverboard is completely safe. Like every electronic device, these come with a risk as well. However, the risk of owning and operating these hoverboards is much higher than other electronic devices. People need to take into these risks before making their decision of purchasing a hoverboard.

Conclusion

No technology is free from risk and same is the case with Hoverboards. However, we see a dramatic difference in the Hoverboards that were first introduced in 2015 and the ones that are being introduced this year. If you were to look back over this article, it seems like hoverboard accidents and injuries are just waiting to happen. That’s not the case at all. Follow the steps I mentioned above, and both you and your child will be able to enjoy hoverboards accident-free for a long time.

Segway Review

Before anyone should buy a Segway it is important to know how to use one and to know how it works. Segway’s are battery operated and depending upon which model you buy they can take anywhere from six to eight hours to fully charge. On a full charge a good Segway should be able to travel about 20km before needing to be recharged again. The battery charge should always be found in the middle of the board, it will be a bright light so you always know roughly how long until you need to plug it in again.

When you first step on the Segway you might be a little confused as to which part is the front and which is the back. The Segway should have light sensors on the front of the board, that is usually how you can tell if you are on it the correct way.

Segway’s or (hover boards) are not easy to get control of the first couple times that you use them, so make sure you have someone else there to hold on to on your first try. You will also want to try riding somewhere free of obstacles.

Initially you will try to hold your hands out to balance yourself, but this will actually interrupt what the Segway is trying to do. It is best you just keep your hands at your side and let the Segway do all the work. First though you have to find a great Segway for sale.

WHY WOULD PEOPLE WANT TO BUY A SEGWAY?

Segway’s are a great way of transportation if you want to avoid the crowded busses or trains that people usually take in the morning to go to work. Segway’s are also very light and easily transportable. The average Segway only weighs around 18 pounds, which means if you ever want to get off and carry it over your shoulder it will not weigh a lot and slow you down.

Unlike normally forms of transportation that might use gas, the Segway is very environmentally friendly using only electricity. The Segway is also virtually silent so you can use it night or day without bothering anyone else with unwanted noise.

The Segway is especially handy if you have recently had a minor injury and cant walk or run without pain, using the board will actually give you the time needed to fully heal from your injury. This being said though if you have any serious injuries you should consult a doctor before using a Segway as a form of transportation.

COMPONENTS TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A SEGWAY

The type of battery that the Segway uses is important and can give you an idea of how long the Segway can stay charged. Max speed varies from Segway to Segway so if going as fast as possible is what you are looking for than you will want to look closely at the max speed. The wheel size is something that people often overlook, but this is extremely important, you don’t want to buy a Segway that has really tiny wheels because that means the bottom will be very close to the ground, and as we all know the ground is bumpy and rocky and therefore can ruin the bottom of the board if the wheel are too tiny. How far the board can go on one charge is something to look closely at, the last thing you want is to be halfway to work and the board stop on you, make sure you pay attention to how far each board can go on one charge before you purchase a Segway. Most users of a Segway happen to be children but paying attention to the weight limit is something to take note of, Segway’s can hold a fair amount of weight but you don’t want to buy one if you exceed the weight limit. This is also important when carrying anything while riding, if you are carrying anything that puts you over the weight limit you could damage the Segway.

A cool feature to look for is Bluetooth speakers, if you enjoy music and are riding somewhere there isn’t a lot of people then Bluetooth speakers playing your favorite song while you ride doesn’t seem like such a bad idea, along with speakers having a smart key attached is a good idea also, this allows you to feel safe that know one else but you can start the Segway. And last but not least you will want to pay attention to the price. The cost of a Segway can vary from around $250-$800.

A short test will let you understand that it is quite stable and therefore, the risk of accidents is minimized when you ride on it. One is that they are the ones that you will rely on to light your way if you are riding in the dark, and two, it will make you visible when there is not enough light. Either way, your safety is boosted. However, you should not forget to wear protective gear including a reflector jacket.

BATTERY PERFORMANCE

There is a 36v/158Wh battery fitted in the hoverboards. This is accompanied by a charger with AC 100-240V / 50-60Hz. The battery charges for about 120 minutes, and it can be used to power your hoverboards for up to two hours, or ten miles. This is enough time for you to cover considerable distance. You do not have to worry about recharging because the product is light and portable so you can carry your charger and recharge whenever needed. It is recommended to avoid overcharging the hoverboards because it can lead to several risks. Some people prefer to leave their hoverboard to charge overnight. If you do this, it only means that the process will not be monitored. You also should know that it has an operating temperature of 40-100° F and therefore, the battery has to be kept within those levels to avoid damaging it, or exposing the rider to other dangers.

TERRAIN

One of the reasons why the monorover r2 is popular is because it can be ridden on a wide variety of terrains. You can use it on the pavement, light gravel, ordinary dirt, on a rainy day, and indoors. Regardless of the conditions under which you are using it, you will notice that the performance is not affected. Not everyone rides on the same type of terrain and therefore, you need to be sure that you are buying something that will not limit you to areas that you are not comfortable with.

One thing that is clear is that Monorover R2 is a good option for anyone looking for a Segway for sale. The features speak for themselves. Of course, you may be looking for other features that are not contained in the description above. It is quite normal because it also may be difficult to find everything in one place. CONCLUSION

Overall owning a Segway or a hover board can be either a fun activity or a means of transportation. All of the brands named above have unique qualities meaning you have options when buying one. Lots of celebrities are seen riding around on these in their houses and around the set of a movie or TV show. Segway’s are great at parties for showing off to your friends or just being used as a means to get to work. Research all these Segway’s in depth before you make a decision because like stated above, they all have unique qualities and you want to make sure that you purchase the right one for you. They can be pretty pricey so buying one and then figuring out that you don’t like it probably isn’t something you want to do. Most of these Segways you have to order and come from china, meaning once you order one you will probably be waiting at least a couple of weeks before it arrives, so if you are buying for a special day make sure you plan in advance. But once it arrives there is no doubt you will be having fun and zipping around in no time.

TOP 10 ELECTRIC SCOOTERS FOR SALE

No matter where you live you have most likely seen those little scooters that kids ride around in, where they push off the ground to gather speed and try to do little tricks, and at one point thought that it would be neat to buy your kids one, heck even buy one for yourself.

Now the electric scooter is a little more advanced than the one you push to get it moving. Electric scooters actually have a motor so all you have to do is stand on it and get up to some pretty fast speeds. When using an electric scooter as a form of transportation you can sleep easy knowing that you are not leaving a carbon footprint behind like some other scooter that use gas as a form of energy. Another great thing about electric scooter are that they can be used by kids and adults, they cost relatively cheap and can even help reduce the cost of the public transportation that you might be paying for currently.

Below are 10 different electric scooters for sale that you can research to try and find the right one just for you and your family. All of them have differences that make each unique, so be sure to read carefully and do some additional research if you find one that you like.

E-WHEELS IN MOTION L6

E-Wheels In motion L6

The L6 electric scooter is able to travel around 15.5 miles per hour which is plenty fast, most people sprinting at their top speed can’t even go that fast. This electric scooter is also the number one on this list for the distance you can travel until you need to recharge your battery. You can go roughly 25 miles until needing a boost. The L6 comes with nice sized 8’’ rims that allows for a comfortable ride, and can even hold up to 220lbs. Most of the reviews on the L6 say that this scooter is actually one of the better looking scooters on the market, and with its cruise control ability you just have to steer while you drive to your destination.

SWAGTRON

Obviously just like all the other scooters in this list the Swagtron is powered by electricity. It has a carbon fiber frame, meaning this scooter is very durable but also light, weighing in at only 17 pounds. For a scooter that weighs so little you wouldn’t expect the Swagtron to be able to carry up to an amazing 300 pounds. And like the name suggests this scooter has swag with a backlit LED display so you can monitor your speed while you drive. This scooter like many of the others comes in a variety of colors to suit the needs of both boys and girls.

GLION DOLLY

Glion Dolly

The Dolly scooter also features 8’’ tires, but these tires are specifically made to never get flat. This means you can drive long distances without fear of running over something sharp and end up being stranded on the side of the road. At speeds of 15 miles per hour it is right on par with the rest of the scooters on this list although its travel distance until it needs a charge is slightly low at about 15 miles.

RAZOR E100

Razor E100

Not much special about the E100, it’s primarily only for children seeing that the weight limit is 120 pounds. Now it does still travel at 10 miles per hour so if your child is riding the E100 we advise that they wear a helmet. The battery life in the E100 isn’t anything special either, running for about 40 minutes until it needs to recharge. Remember though this is for a child, not someone who is going to be traveling to work on a daily basis.

The Euro is a relatively cheap scooter  that you actually sit down in while you drive it. This scooter has more of an old school feel and design to it carrying weights of about 170 pounds this scooter is made for people over the age of 12. This scooter does have the largest wheel on this list at 12’’ which means if you are looking for a scooter with a very smooth drive then this is the one for you. The battery life isn’t the greatest but the scooter does travel at 15 miles per hour and a 40-minute charge. One unique item on this scooter is that the seat is also a storage device for anything you might be carrying.

GENESIS HORNET

Genesis Hornet

The hornet is the most waterproof of the scooters mentioned so far, this doesn’t mean you should be driving around in puddles or anything, but taking it out when there is a light rain should be okay. The whole entire scooter only weighs about 20 pounds which means it would be very easy to pick up and carry in crowded places. Just like most of the other scooters this travels at 15.5 miles per hour and can last up to 20-25 miles. For such a light scooter it’s still able to carry up to 220 pounds at a time.

RAZOR E300

Much like the E100 stated above the E300 can travel a bit faster, topping in at 15 miles per hour and being able to travel for 40 minutes before needing a charge. These scooters are chain driven scooters which allows you to be able to fix them easier should anything go wrong. The E100 could hold 120 pounds but the E300 is able to hold 220 pounds, almost twice as much.

INMOTION LIVELY

Inmotion lively

The Inmotion scooter is another scooter that does well in the rain, again you don’t want to be driving this is puddles or hurricane season, but if it is raining outside a bit then this scooter should be good to go. At speeds of 15.5 miles per hour and a range of about 20-25 miles this scooter will get you from place to place without much trouble. The Inmotion is able to fold up which makes it easy to take with you if you end up needing to go up some stairs or a steep hill. This scooter also comes with 8’’ tires and cruise control. Another feature of this scooter is that it has Bluetooth attached to it, allowing you to sync it to your phone.

UBERSCOOT 1600W

UberScoot 1000W Electric Scooter

The uberscoot is by far the fastest scooters on this list, and because of that it is meant for people 12 years and older. This scooter gets up to speeds of 26 Miles per hour, and you are advised to wear a helmet when riding. On a full charge you should be able to travel a distance of around 10 miles. The Uberscoot has a good weight limit as well, being able to carry 265 pounds. Because of its speed this scooter comes with fairly large 10’’ tires to make your ride as smooth as possible.

ECORECO M5

The Eco Reco M5 is one of the stronger scooters on the list, being able to carry a person weighing in at about 280 pounds. The M5 is also a pretty fat scooter and can travel 20 miles per hours and has a full battery life of 20 miles before you would need to recharge. Because it’s able to carry so much weight you probably won’t be folding it up and throwing it over your shoulders, The M5 weighs almost 50 pounds.

CONCLUSION

As you can see, there are many electric scooters to choose from. All of them have different designs, battery life, and travel distance. Looking more in depth at each of these scooter will give you a better idea of which one will be best for your needs. The huge benefit for some individuals is that you absolutely do not need a license to drive one. Cars can be very expensive and are actually a hassle and taking the public transit for some people can be an even bigger hassle, especially with how crowded busses and trains are lately. If you only work a short distance away, an electric scooter is a great investment to make.
