TOP 7 HOVERBOARD COMPARISON: WHICH IS THE BEST ONE

A COMPARISON OF 7 DIFFERENT HOVERBOARDS TO FIND OUT WHICH IS THE BEST ONE TO BUY.

Here it is, the ultimate hoverboard comparison review. Many brands of hoverboard look exactly alike. Without carefully examining them how do you know which hoverboard is the best? Which hoverboard is the worst? Is there really any difference between the hoverboard brands?

WHAT’S THE BEST HOVERBOARD TO BUY?

  • How do you know which hoverboard you should buy?
  • Which is the safest hoverboard available?
  • Will the Swagway explode?
  • What about a Powerboard?
  • What the heck is the difference between a Swagtron and a Powerboard anyway?
  • Is it like a scooter? A skateboard?

I’m sure these questions are bouncing around inside your head as you read this. It’s okay, my goal here is to answer those questions for you. I used to be in the same position. I knew what I wanted, I knew how I wanted it, I knew where I wanted it from. I just didn’t know WHICH I wanted.

Hoverboards are perfect for the holiday season, father day, or just a sweet ride but I’m guessing that you are in the same boat I was when I first started comparing hoverboards trying to learn which was the best one to buy. If you think this whole ordeal is extremely confusing, you’re not alone.

Be the end of this article I’ll show you some of the top hoverboards and show you which ones you should consider buying and why.

THE WORLD OF HOVERBOARDS IS CONFUSING.

On one hand, there are the brands and styles of hoverboards. 6.5″, 8″, and even 10″ wheels making it a smooth ride for the rider. Then there’s the features: with Bluetooth, without Bluetooth, remote/no remote.

It’s hard to make sense of but it’s the future.

I won’t even mention mini- Segway vs hoverboard vs smart balance wheel (HINT: they’re the same thing, just different names  but they’re all real hoverboards)

WHICH HOVERBOARD IS THE BEST ONE TO BUY?

Are you in a hurry and just want to jump to the conclusion of this hoverboard comparison?

t’s okay if you don’t want to mess with any of this. Are you looking for the quick and easy answer to Which hoverboard is the best one to buy? Click on this button and you’ll be taken to the hoverboard comparison chart that I have at the end of this post.

HERE’S THE CRITERIA THAT I USE TO COMPARE HOVERBOARDS

1. THE HOVERBOARD TOP SPEED

How fast does the hoverboard go? What’s it’s top speed? Is there a “learning mode?” What happens when the hoverboard reaches it’s top speed.

2. THE MAXIMUM RANGE OF THE HOVERBOARD

How far does the manufacturer say that you can theoretically go? Is this a reasonable estimate or have they just inflated the number for marketing?

3. THE HOVERBOARD’S BATTERY

We have all become slaves to the all mighty battery. How long of can you use the hoverboard before you need to recharge the battery? Also, how long do you have to wait for the battery to recharge.

4. THE MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY

How long is the warranty that comes with your hoverboard? What is covered by the warranty? More importantly, what isn’t covered by the warranty?

5. THE PRICE

Probably the most important thing to consider, how much will it cost to buy the hoverboard. Are there multiple places where you can buy it? Are there deals or other discounts available.

WHICH HOVERBOARDS ARE BEING COMPARED

A HOVERBOARD COMPARISON OF SEVEN DIFFERENT 6.5″ HOVERBOARDS.

These are the nine brands and models that will be included in this hoverboard comparison. Included in the list are hoverboards less than $300, hoverboards with bluetooth speakers, and also some of the most popular hoverboards for 2016. If I tried to include all the different brands and models of hoverboards, this list would be way too long, so I’ve tried to condense it into something a little bit more manageable.

If there is a brand or model that you would like to hear my opinion on or even see added to this list, please use the Contact form on the About page and send me a message.

THE BATTLE OF THE BUDGET HOVERBOARDS (UNDER $300)

Looking for the cheapest hoverboard to buy, but you don’t want to get one that’s “too cheap?” While there’s a few places that offer hoverboards for less than $200, you can run the risk of getting a hoverboard that’s uncertified and possibly dangerous.

Getting a hoverboard for less than $300 is doable and if you want one without any of the bells and whistles than these are the budget hoverboards for you.

  • The Streetsaw DailySaw vs the equivalent Skque self-balancing scooter

The StreetSaw and Skque brands both have several different models that are available in several different sizes and colors. They also are some of the only 6.5″ hoverboards with Bluetooth speakers. But Bluetooth speakers are only one of the cool features with these. They also have LED lights that give a light show in sync to the music that they play.

AN IMPORTANT TIP FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS:

If you’ve just started to research self balancing scooters or hoverboards you might be confused by all the different hoverboards that are available.

Beyond that, how do you know which hoverboard is safe to buy, and which ones won’t catch fire or explode? Many of the hoverboards look identical, there might be slight differences in the wheels, or the name on the front. But crack the case, and that’s where you will see all the differences between the hoverboard brands.

By using lower quality batteries inside the hoverboard, lower powered motors, and/or both, manufacturers were able to build a cheaper version that they could sell for the price of the more expensive scooter. Here’s the tip: make sure that you read the hoverboard specs when you are shopping. That’s the reason that there’s such a difference in prices between hoverboards.

REVIEWING THE HOVERBOARDS

THE BATTLE OF THE BUDGET: HOVERBOARDS UNDER $300

In the battle of the budget hoverboard there are very few differences between the different brands and hoverboards. The first step to finding which is the best hoverboard under 0 is to begin looking at the performance specs of the self-balancing scooters. Most of them will have the same rough specs:

  • 8 mph top speed
  • 10 mile max range
  • 2-3 hr battery life
  • 90-day warranty

Since the hoverboards all have the same rough performance, then next criteria to judge is what are the hidden benefits to buying from this vendor or than one?

Consider these hidden benefits:

  • Extended manufacturer’s warranty
  • Easy warranty service
  • Vendor reliability (will they be around in a year)
  • Cost of shipping/sales tax

Let’s check out the first budget hoverboard, the Zippyboard Cruiser

ZIPPYBOARD CRUISER

The Zippyboard Cruiser 6.5 inch Two Wheel Smart Self Balancing Electric Scooter Hoverboard

ABOUT THE ZIPPYBOARD CRUISER

The Zippyboard is a brand that I recently discovered, and though they may be new i have a feeling that they might be around for a while. They offer several different hoverboards in the usual 6.5″ and 10″ sizes. They have several colors to choose from so if you’re looking for a pink hoverboard, then Zippyboard is one of your few choices. Other choice looks are the emoji hoverboard, rainbow hoverboard,

The Zippyboard looks pretty good, especially for a new site. How does it compare to Monorover, one of the first sites to sell hoverboards?

The R2 thrives on smooth surfaces. Concrete, carpet, asphalt, the R2 makes easy roving out of all of them.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MONOROVER R2

The monorover r2 was one of the first hoverboards to be sold in the US. It looks like it will continue to be sold for a long time. Monorover is also the only hoverboard brand that offers a discount for buying multiple hoverboards at the same time. Buying two hoverboards? You can save 7%. If you buy four hoverboards you save 34%.  That’s awesome savings. That discount gets the price for each hoverboard under $200.

WHICH HOVERBOARD PRICED UNDER $300 SHOULD YOU BUY?

Now that you’ve seen both the Monorover and the Zipppyboard, how do they compare?

Monorover is the basic hoverboard that you see sold everywhere. There’s nothing that really makes it stand out when compared to other brands, though the bulk discount is nice if you happen to be needing to buy several hoverboards. Also if you wanted to buy a R2 hoverboard under $300 you are limited to white or black. The red and blue versions are both $100 more.

Zipppyboard on the other hand blows the Monorover away. Granted the performance specs are roughly the same for both hoverboards, but the Zippyboard also offers these:

  • Cheapest hoverboard price at $260.
  • Hoverboard with remote control
  • Offers several unique colors and styles

I think the winner for best budget hoverboard is the Zippyboard Cruiser.

THE BATTLE OF THE MOST POPULAR HOVERBOARDS

A showdown between the Hovertrax 2.0 and the new generation of Powerboard by Hoverboard. While Razor was a little late bringing a product to market, both the Hovertrax and the Powerboard were well on there way to being best-sellers on Amazon before the safety issues caused them to be removed from Amazon.

Both the Hovertrax and Powerboard were some of the first brands of hoverboards that were UL-2272 certified. This means that they have been certified safe for use and shouldn’t explode.

Let’s take a closer look at these very popular hoverboards.

RAZOR HOVERTRAX 2.0

Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Hoverboard

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is the newest hoverboard from Razor USA

THE HOVERTRAX 2.0 IS THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOVERBOARD

This hoverboard comparison wouldn’t be complete without considering the ride-along and electric scooter behemoth that is Razor USA. Typically known for their kick scooters the Hovertrax 2.0 is showing innovations that shows Razor knows their target demographic.

They were slow to bring a product to market, but now the Razor Hovertrax is trying to become the #1 hoverboard bought in America. But how does it compare to the other hoverboards?

TIP: Do you wonder why your Hovertrax shakes sometimes while riding? You’ve got a low battery, and should charge soon.

Features:

A low 60 minutes is the estimated battery life. Though it may come with a fairly short battery life, Hovertrax 2.0 is designed to allow you to swap batteries out whenever you have a dead one. No other hoverboard has this feature.

Warranty

There is only a 90-day manufacturer’s warranty.

TIP: Charge your Hovertrax or any other hoverboard immediately after use. This will prolong the battery life.

I do like that you can change the battery if need and the fact that Razor is a reliable company.

I don’t like that the Hovertrax top speed is so low or that the battery doesn’t last more than an hour.Shop on Amazon

The Powerboard by Hoverboard is one of the most popular brands of self-balancing scooter.

SUMMARY:

The Powerboard by Hoverboard is a great hoverboard and was previously one of the hoverboards that I usually recommended immediately to anyone that asked.

That’s changed slightly since the new safety standards were released. Other brands have made it clear what improvements were done in order to become certified. The Powerboard hasn’t made these changes clear, therefore I’m a bit more hesitant to recommend it. Having said that, this is still, a great hoverboard to buy.Shop on Amazon

WHICH IS THE BETTER HOVERBOARD: HOVERTRAX 2.0 VS POWERBOARD?

Comparing the Hovertrax and the Powerboard used to be easy for me to do. The Powerboard used to be the better hoverboard. Now it’s beginning to be a little hard for me to universally recommend the Powerboard. While the Hovertrax is still crippled by the slower top speed and shorter battery life, the ability to quickly change batteries may tip the scales in its favor.

But not enough for me to recommend the Hovertrax over the Powerboard.

My Recommendation between the Powerboard vs the Hovertrax 2.0?

I recommend the Powerboard by Hoverboard for best hoverboard to Buy Under 0

THE BATTLE OF THE BLUETOOTH HOVERBOARDS (HOVERBOARDS WITH BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS)

Now it’s time for the loudest section of this hoverboard comparison as we look at these two hoverboards with Bluetooth speakers. For now I’m just examining 6.5″ hoverboards, though you can also by 10″ hoverboards with Bluetooth speakers.

Here’s more information about the StreetSaw FutureSaw and the Skque Smart Balance Boards

The StreetSaw DailySaw 6.5″ self-balancing scooter comes with Bluetooth Speakers.

ALL OF THE STREETSAW HOVERBOARDS ARE INTERESTING, ESPECIALLY THE DAILYSAW.

Where to start with the DailySaw?

It’s currently one of the fastest hoverboards with a top speed of 10.5 mph.

The estimated range is 12 miles with an expected battery life of 5-6 hours.

Did I mention the Bluetooth speakers and RGB LED lights?

It also has an aircraft grade aluminum alloy chassis which gives it a rider maximum weight limit of 265 lbs.

As with any purchase you make, there is a trade-off between the performance and the price. In this instance when you buy a Skque hoverboard you’re getting a lower price with an equally lower performance.

Look out for the 30-day warranty!Buy On Amazon

WHICH IS THE BEST HOVERBOARD WITH BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS UNDER $600?

Looking back at the Skque vs the DailySaw from StreetSaw you can clearly see that one is better than the other. The Dailysaw is faster and goes farther for longer, while costing only a few dollars more.

Getting those few dollars extra is sometimes not possible, and if you’re willing to trade-off a little bit of performance, you can get Bluetooth speakers and LED lights in your hoverboard for under $500.

WHAT’S YOUR RECOMMENDED HOVERBOARD WITH SPEAKERS?

If you need a hoverboard with Bluetooth Speakers I recommend getting a DailySaw from StreetSaw.

Our hoverboards both support up to 264 lbs (though UL cert. is only for up to 220 lbs).  Therefore, although they’re not the greatest of the bunch, it may still be worth adding our boards into the comparison on that page.  Either just a couple call-to-action blurbs or actually include our products in the comparison.  We could stress that “if you weigh less than 264 lbs, these hoverboards from ScooterEra are the some of the sleekest and highest-quality on the market”.

COMPARING THE SCOOTERERA EXTREME HOVERBOARD

Earlier in this article you’ve seen me compare 6 hoverboards based on these broad categories:

  • Budget Hoverboards Priced Under $300
  • The Most Popular Hoverboards for 2016
  • Hoverboards with Special Features

In each of those categories I picked one of the hoverboards as being the best one. Now let’s see what has been my recommended choice and how it compares.

But first, let’s see the details about the SE Extreme.

WHAT HOVERBOARD IS THE BEST ONE?

Even after having looked at all of these hoverboards, it’s difficult to choose one and saw that this is the best hoverboard. Because the self-balancing scooter that’s perfect for me, might not meet the next person’s needs. Here are my recommendations based on this mentality.

ARE YOU TRYING TO GET THE CHEAPEST HOVERBOARD?

If you’re looking to buy a hoverboard for sale cheap, then you’d be crazy not to look at the Zippyboard two-wheeled hoverboard. Unlike other cheap hoverboards, the Zippyboard has decent speed and battery life. It includes a 1-year warranty and free shipping.  All of this and it only costs $260! It’s a great low cost hoverboard.

YOU DON’T WANT A BASIC HOVERBOARD, BUT YOU CAN’T SPEND TOO MUCH.

After the low cost hoverboards the next price tier is around $400. For that price you can get a hoverboard that’s got decent performance and value. Instead of the Powerboard, my recommendation is to get a Swagtron T1. It costs the same and Swagtron T1 has a few extra features that make it a safer and more reliable hoverboard.

If you decide on either a Powerboard or the T1 to buy the hoverboards on Amazon. You’ll get fast shipping, and if you buy a hoverboard on Amazon, you can get a SquareTrade Extended Warranty. It will only cost about $35, but will give you an extra 2 years of warranty protection.  Buying the extended warranty from the official site will cost you $99-$139 more.  This is also true if you decide to buy a Hovertrax, if you get it on Amazon, you can get the extended warranty.

IF YOU NEED A HIGH-PERFORMANCE HOVERBOARD OR WITH BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS.

The StreetSaw hoverboards are my current recommendation if you want the fastest hoverboard or speakers. If you get a DailySaw you’ll get a fast hoverboard, with an extended battery life, Bluetooth speakers, and LED lights.

CONCLUSION:

The world of hoverboards is not as complex as it may appear at first, once you get used to the need to look carefully at the details. Two hoverboards may have the same appearance, but on the inside they can be very different.

I hope this comparison has been helpful to you. If you have any additional questions, comments, thoughts, please use the contact form on the About page (the link is at the bottom in the footer) and message me.  I love to answer questions and will help you in any way that I can.

SWAGTRON T1 HOVERBOARD REVIEW

THE SWAGTRON T1 REVIEWED: CAN HOVERBOARDS BE SAFE TO OWN?

An in-depth review of the Swagtron t1 self-balancing scooter with particular attention given to the new safety features that promise a safer product for everyone.

Until recently it looked like hoverboards were a fad that had disappeared just as quickly as they had appeared.

Everywhere you looked was a news article about how a hoverboard caused this fire or a viral video of someone trying to ride a hoverboard and failing.

Even the CPSC became involved and declared that “all hoverboards were unsafe.”

That declaration seemed to be the last straw for many hoverboard retailers, as they soon removed them from their shelves.

What many people did not know is that at the same time that the CPSC was declaring hoverboards unsafe, they released a set of hoverboard safety standards, covering more than 40 different tests.

Now, just a few months later, hoverboards are beginning to make their return to stores. Currently, only a few brands have been able to meet the UL-2272 hoverboard safety standards.

This review will cover the SwagTron T1 hoverboard. In it, I will show you what makes this one of the safest and best hoverboards that you can buy.

The Swagtron T1 smart balance board has new wheel rims and smaller fenders

The Swagtron T1 Smart Hands-free Self-balancing Scooter is a great all-purpose hoverboard.

WHO SHOULD BUY A SWAGTRON T1?

The Swagtron T1 is a great hoverboard for most people. In fact, this is what I recommend when people ask me which hoverboard they should buy.

Here’s why:

  • The Swagtron T1 is a safer hoverboard. Not only that, but you can see what has been done to make it a safer hoverboard. Other brands might say that they are safer, but what improvements were made? Most don’t have an answer for that.
  • The T1 is a decent trade-off between performance, price, and safety. I might wish that it could go faster, but that’s minor.
  • Swagway and Swagtron are the best-selling hoverboards. This means the company is much less likely to suddenly go out of business like many other companies that sell hoverboards.

Bottom Line:

The Swagtron T1 is a great blend of safety, performance, and price.

DOES THE SWAGTRON T1 HOVERBOARD FIT YOUR NEEDS?

The first thing that you should do when considering which hoverboard to buy is to review how you are planning on using the hoverboard.

Do you need a hoverboard for yourself, or is it something that you are purchasing for a child or loved one?

Do you want to use the hoverboard to commute around campus, or to cruise casually along a boardwalk?

While many hoverboards are still very similar in their performance features, knowing what you might use it for will help greatly in deciding which is the perfect hoverboard for you.

DON’T HAVE TIME TO READ? WATCH THE VIDEO INSTEAD

IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HOVERBOARD

  • Vendor Support and Reliability – if something goes wrong with the hoverboard, can you get help easily?
  • Will the hoverboard support the primary rider’s weight?
  • How far do would you like to go on it before having to stop and recharge the battery?
  • If using it to commute, do you have somewhere to store/charge it when not in use?
  • What type of terrain would you like to ride it on?
  • What’s the refund policy?
  • How long is the warranty good for? Is an extended warranty available? Or necessary?
  • Can you customize the scooter at all?
  • Does it use any proprietary parts or components?
  • How fast does it travel?
  • How heavy is it? Is it a burden if the battery dies mid-use?
  • How safe is it?
  • Have there been many user complaints?

These are just a few of the things that you should consider when purchasing a hoverboard.

For this review I’ll focus on these four criteria:

  1. Customer Service and support – the reliability of the brand, mechanical performance, and warranty. Will the vendor be there to support you if and when you need it?
  2. Style and design – how stylish is the hoverboard and what sets it apart from other hoverboards
  3. Price – how affordable is it?
  4. Functionality and Features – What new features built into the self-balancing scooter and how does the performance compare to other brands.

Swagway is the most famous and widely known hoverboard brand. However, Swagway decided to rebrand themselves as Swagtron in mid-2016. Additionally, they announced the new UL-2272 safety standards as well as the T1 and T3 models of a hoverboard. Swagtron may be a new name, but it is still the same Swagway company underneath.
SwagTron’s have been used by people like:

  • Jamie Foxx – actor and comedian,
  • The Black-Eyed Peas – musicians
  • Felicity Huffman – actress
  • Luiz Guzman – Actor
  • Parents
  • Teenagers
  • Grandparents
  • …and more

FUNCTIONALITY AND SPECS

If you were to compare the basic specs of the Swagtron hoverboard to other brands, it would be difficult to be impressed.

  • Speed: SwagTron: 8 mph | Those other guys: ranges from 5 mph to about eight mph. The X1 had a higher top speed of 10 mph.
  • Range: 12mi – This is also typical of most brands, though again it is not uncommon to see it mentioned that a hoverboard gets 15-20mi. Travel range varies greatly and depends on the rider’s weight, the terrain, and even the temperature. The X1 had a listed range of 20 mi.
  • Charge Time: Listed as 2-3 hours. If you find yourself needing to charge your hoverboard faster, consider purchasing an after-market hoverboard battery charger. Be sure to get one that has passed the UL safety tests. You can see if it is a safe charger is there are one of the UL marks on the charger.
  • Battery Capacity: 2.6 Ah
  • Battery Voltage: 37 V dc
  • Wheel Size: 6.5” solid rubber
  • Size: 23” W x 7” H x 7” D
  • Hoverboard weight: 22 lbs.
  • Model Number: SPS-T844202000-C8

SWAGTRON CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPPORT

When choosing a hoverboard, it is vital that there be reliable customer service and support behind it.

How popular a brand plays a critical role because the most popular brands are more likely to provide the support for their product long after you purchased it.

That is not to say that unknown or less popular brands do not provide excellent support (they do).

Less popular brands are more likely to disappear over time.

For example, if we were to compare the number of names that were active at Christmas 2015 vs. 4th of July 2016 there would be a huge difference in that figure.

Swagtron sold more than 280,000 hoverboards before March 2016; that is a huge number.

What type of support does Swagtron offer?

SWAGTRON T1 WARRANTY

Swagtron stands behind their product and their customers. In July 2016, more than 500,000 hoverboards were recalled to fix issues with their batteries. However, what many don’t know is that Swagtron had announced that anyone who had purchased an X1 could return it to them, and they would repair it for free.

That is before the recall. You would be hard-pressed to find a company that would announce a plan like that.

The T1 comes with a 1-year warranty. The warranty covers the original purchaser from any defects in material or workmanship under normal use.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Swagtron has a customer support email account at support@swagway.com for any inquiries or questions that buyers may have. Also, they list 844-299-0625 as their support number. (M-F 10am-8:30pm EST)

SOCIAL MEDIA

They also maintain several active social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can find the accounts listed on the Swagtron site.

SWAGTRON T1 INSTRUCTION MANUAL

The T1’s user manual is much better than other brands. Inside it contains information and tips/tricks that you can use while owning your hoverboard.

A beautiful example is the calibration instructions.

Previously, there was no documentation on how to calibrate your hoverboard and users had to learn through word of mouth or YouTube videos.

The manual does not include how to change the operation modes of the T1. Several users have complained because of the low speed and mediocre performance of the T1. If you experience that, you may be in Learner mode instead of the normal operation.

A little further down I show how to change the Swagtron modes.

HOW DOES THE T1 LOOK?

The Swagtron T1 smart balance board has new wheel rims and smaller fenders

The new Swagtron T1 hoverboard has wheel rims that are more stylish and the size of the wheel well has been reduced

For most people, the Swagtron T1 and the Swagway X1 look the same. It is only upon closer inspection that you can see some differences between it and the former model.
The biggest improvement with the T1 is the new safety features.  Slowly the different brands are beginning to distinguish themselves from the basic hoverboard look, like the IO hawk had.

NOTABLE UPGRADES INCLUDE:

  • Bigger, flame-retardant, non-skid grips for the foot pads for a surer grip on them while riding.
  • Upgraded motor and gearing for better control and downhill performance.
  • A new battery charge level indicator.
  • Open wheel wells allow for easier maintenance and wheel rotation.
  • The new SentryShield aluminum housing protects from fire hazards.
  • SentryShield also includes the Smart Battery Management system which manages the battery charging cycle.
  • Non-flammable plastic makes up most of the electronics.
  • A new silicone coating to protect the circuit boards and connections from water, heat and dust.
  • Two different user modes: Learning and Standard.

WHAT COLORS CAN I GET A SWAGTRON IN?

there are 6 standard hoverboard colors to choose from

You can get your hoverboard in any of these six colors.

The Swagtron T1 is available in several different colors.

  • Blue
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Pink
  • Garnet
  • Black

The new Swagtron T1 hoverboard has wheel rims that are more stylish and the size of the wheel well has been reduced

Reducing the wheel well makes for easier maintenance and wheel replacement. Terrain that is a little rougher will be easier to travel over.

However, it also can increase the chances of shoe laces or backpack straps possibly becoming caught in the wheel

Another change you see in a direct comparison of the X1 and the T1 is on the foot pads.

A little non-slip grip helps out a lot more than you would think. Moreover, a new, non-flammable material is used in the foot pads.

HOW MUCH DOES THE SWAGTRON T1 COST?

Time to talk about the cost of the T1 hoverboard. You may find a hoverboard for less than the Swagtron T1’s price of $399.
I guarantee you that it will not be a product that has the same quality as the T1. For a hoverboard with a 1-year warranty, $399 is very reasonable. Compare that to the Segway MiniPro at $999 and you will see what I mean.

Note: if you would like to save on the price of a hoverboard bought via the Swagtron.com website, be sure to use my Swagtron coupon code: swag-78A540XUCH

WHERE TO BUY A SWAGTRON T1:

You can buy a T1 from several different vendors: BestBuy, Modells, and even Swagtron themselves. I don’t recommend that, though.

Why?

Because it will cost you more than if you buy it from Amazon. Typically Amazon has the lowest prices for hoverboards

Typically Amazon has the lowest prices for hoverboards, with some brands even offering them there for a few dollars less.

But the real reason to buy a Swagtron T1 from Amazon is that you can also purchase a SquareTrade Extended Self-Balancing Scooter Protection Plan.

You’ll get an extra TWO years of coverage for your electric scooter. You never have to pay for shipping to get it fixed, and it costs under $40 for a $400 self-balancing scooter.

If you buy an extended warranty from Swagtron, it costs $99 for one year.

That’s why you should buy an Amazon hoverboard. The warranty covers any hoverboard, not just the Swagtron. BUT,

SWAGTRON T1 FEATURES

NEW SAFETY FEATURES IN THE SWAGTRON

After the way hoverboards exploded (pun intended) into the Christmas 2015 holidays, many people see them as being extremely dangerous.
Even the Consumer Products Safety Commission said they were unsafe, and even announced a recall of more than 500,000 hoverboards. (280,000 of them the Swagway X1, the Swagtron T1’s direct predecessor)

How is it that now, a few months later, hoverboards are beginning to be sold again?

What are these safety features designed into the SwagTron T1 that changed the mind of the CPSC and how do they help to increase rider safety?

WHAT MAKES HOVERBOARD BATTERIES CATCH FIRE?

There are two main ways that lithium-ion batteries inside of hoverboards catch fire and explode.
The first is when something punctures the other casing and inner layers of a battery. This perforation allows the chemicals inside the battery to mix. That mixture when exposed to oxygen, looks like this:

puncture test of a hoverboard battery

Using a nail to perform a blunt puncture test of a hoverboard lithium ion battery

This is an image of a blunt nail puncture test of a lithium-ion battery. Typically, a hoverboard battery has from 12-24 of these cells.
As you can see, a simple puncture of the batteries casing causes it to burst into flames.
The second method that hoverboard batteries catch fire occurs while they are charging. While charging, a hot spot inside the battery may occur. The hot spot begins to overheat, leading to a short circuit and a reaction (called rapid discharging) occurs:

A flame heats a hoverboard battery. The real-time video is only 20 seconds like before it catches fire.

These two ways that hoverboard batteries catch fire happened to hoverboards in 22 states causing $2 million in damages.

Before the creation of the UL-2272 safety standard for self-balancing scooter electrical systems, no hoverboard had any protection against one of these situations possibly occurring to a hoverboard.

Until the Swagtron T1 incorporated these:

SWAGTRON SENTRYSHIELD

The SentryShield™ battery is SwagTron’s solution to hoverboards catching on fire.

It is a fire-proof and airtight aluminum case that contains the lithium-ion battery safely inside of it. Compare that to what an older battery pack looked like:

the streetsaw replacement battery for hoverboards and self-balancing scooters.

An older battery pack for a hoverboard. There’s not much in the way of protection.

That is blue plastic shrink-wrap surrounding the battery. It is used to keep the battery’s cells together.

This is what the SentryShield looks like:

A SentryShield battery pack from SwagTron will keep hoverboards from exploding

The new Swagtron SentryShield battery pack. It’s an air-tight aluminium casing to help prevent fires

The new Swagtron SentryShield battery pack. It is an air-tight aluminum casing to help prevent fires

In my opinion, the SentryShield is the most impressive feature of the new Swagtron self-balancing scooters.

In the previous generation of hoverboards, there was a plastic bracket to secure the battery to the case.

The next layer of protection was the hoverboard shell. (That and the blue shrink wrap on the battery, lol.)

The plastic shell was notorious for how quickly it scratched and often normal use would damage it. It would not take much to penetrate the shell and puncture the battery.
SentryShield removes the possibility of your battery getting punctured by enclosing the battery completely inside an airtight aluminum case.

The case protects the battery from accidental damages during use. Because the case is airtight, the battery is also protected from catching on fire if the battery is over-charged.

Finally, SwagTron removed the flimsy plastic bracket that was previously holding in place inside the chassis.

HOW MUCH SAFER IS A SENTRYSHIELD BATTERY?

Here’s a video showing someone testing the SwagTron T1 and its new SentryShield battery. He takes a propane torch and starts heating up the battery.

After 30 mins of continuous blowtorching, he stops because it’s obvious that it’s not going to catch on fire. A little smoke was all that resulted from his testing.

I’ve been closely following hoverboards for almost a full year now and I’ve never seen something like this.

SAFESTOP TECHNOLOGY

With SentryShield working to prevent hoverboard fires, people falling off the hoverboard are the next biggest safety issues. SwagTron’s solution to riders falling is their new SafeStop feature.
Now instead of abruptly stopping whenever the battery dies, the T1 will reduce the speed gradually instead of jerking to a complete stop like previous versions did.

That means no more of this happening:Video Player00:0100:05

NEW MODES OF OPERATION

The Swagtron T1 introduces two modes of operation.

The Learner mode is for beginners and hoverboard novices. It reduces the speed, increases the stabilization levels, and reduces the sensitivity of the sensors inside the foot pads.

By reducing the sensitivity and responsiveness of the T1 novice riders will be able to learn how to ride a hoverboard much quicker.

The Standard operation mode resets the hoverboard performance to the default performance and sensitivity settings.

HOW TO SWITCH THE SWAGTRON T1 FROM LEARNING MODE TO STANDARD MODE

SwagTron doesn’t mention how to change modes in the user manual. I’m putting this here to help out anyone who might need to get their hoverboard to change modes.

  1. Turn the hoverboard off place it on a level surface
  2. Press the Power button 1x to turn the hoverboard on. You should hear the usual Power On beep.
  3. One second later, press the Power button 1x again.
  4. The Swagtron will beep again, but this time, it will be a longer beep than the first time you hit the Power button.

You’ve now put the T1 into standard mode and should be able to go full-speed.

OTHER NEW SAFETY FEATURES

Here’s a hoverboard with the SentryShield battery pack. If you look closely, you can see the screws that mount it to the chassis of the hoverboard.
The SentryShield is not the only new feature that has added to the Swagtron T1. Here’s a bit more information about the other new features:

  • There is now a silicone gel layer that used on the main circuit board. It seals the circuit boards from dust and moisture, as well as providing temperature regulation to keep the circuit board from overheating.
  • Wider foot pads made from an anti-slip flame-retardant material. These will help to reduce the likelihood of riders losing grip and falling when riding the hoverboard.
  • SwagTron also changed the gearing and stabilizers inside the T1. When traveling downhill, the T1 will not increase speed and will have a smoother, more controlled ride.
  • The hoverboard shell uses a new Hard ABS plastic. It is a fire-resistant polycarbonate that won’t melt when exposed to heat.
  • The new shell is also lighter weight than the older model casing. It reduces the overall weight of the Swagtron T1 to 22 lbs.

The Swagtron T1 has passed all of the safety and quality standards that required for all self-balancing electric scooters, including:

  • UL2272: the self-balancing electric scooter standard from UL labs and the CPSC
  • UN38.3: The United Nations safety standard for all lithium-ion batteries.

Look for this sticker when buying a self-balancing scooter that claims to be UL-2272 certified. If it doesn’t have this holographic sticker, it may be counterfeit.

This is the label for devices that have passed UL2272 electrical systems for self-balancing scooters safety standard

New hoverboards that have passed UL 2272 will include this sticker on the device AND charger.

MY REVIEW OF THE T1 SWAGTRON HOVERBOARD

Swagway took the X1 back to the lab and returned with a much better product, as well as a new name.

The SwagTron T1 has all of the previously mentioned features included, as well as many more minor tweaks and adjustments.

With these new safety features, it will be much harder, if not impossible to have a hoverboard catch on fire with normal usage..

The SwagTron T1 self-balancing electric scooter is a much safer hoverboard than any that have previously been available.

The new polycarbonate hoverboard shell used in the T1 is much more durable than the previous versions. The shell, when combined with silicone bumpers, will protect your hoverboard from most of the scratches and scrapes that older models experienced.

Including different modes of operation make this a great hoverboard for beginners and experienced riders.

If you saw my Swagway X1 review, you would notice that I mentioned that the X1 might not be for all riders. Unlike the X1, the Swagtron T1 is an excellent hoverboard for anyone, no matter what skill level they are.

I do recommend that you use the Learning Mode if you have never ridden a hoverboard before.

These are all great improvements that make the T1 better than the X1. However, if you were to compare the specs of the X1 to the T1, the X1 would be the winner. The X1 had a higher top speed and a further range than the T1 does. So if you are looking to get the fastest hoverboard, or one that is performance enhanced, the T1 might not be a good fit for you.

And while it might not be the fastest hoverboard available, I think that the safety features justify the lower specs of the T1.

The Swagtron includes a standard 1-year limited warranty. The warranty covers the original purchaser and the hoverboard from defects in material or workmanship. It does NOT cover damage from road hazards, accidents, or improper use.

HOW DOES THE T1 COMPARE TO OTHER HOVERBOARD BRANDS?

How does it compare to the Swagway X1?

As you probably already know, the Swagway X1 was one of the most popular hoverboards in the lead up to Christmas 2015. Thousands were of this model were sold, and the manufacturers even went out of stock for a week after Black Friday, such was the demand for this brand.

The Swagtron was designed to replace the Swagway – an improved model for 2016 with even better features and safety.

The following are some of the ways in which the new model is different to the Swagway:

  • It is UL2272 listed – this is a new standard that has been introduced in the last few months to evaluate the fire and electrical safety of the electrical and battery and charger systems of hoverboards. Currently, Swagtron is the only hoverboard to be listed (although other companies have submitted their products for UL testing so there may be others in the near future). Swagway is still considered to be safe though – its battery and charger is UL certified, unlike many other hoverboards on the market.
  • It comes with a learning mode – this is a safer, slower mode that learners can use to practice their riding skills before progressing to the standard mode (where you can reach top speed).
  • Features non-slip foot pads that make it easier to control your self balancing scooter without falling off.
  • It’s lighter than the original Swagway by about 4lbs.
  • Swagtron comes with new safe stop technology which is hardware and software controlled – no more abrupt stopping which can cause falls.

As you can see, there are some cool new features, and the best thing is that it costs the same as the original! If you want even more features you might want to consider the swagtron t3 – it costs an extra $100 but comes with Bluetooth, an app, and more (see the next section).

If you still want a Swagway it’s still available on the official website, and at the reduced price of just $349. This is still an awesome scooter and although it isn’t UL2272 listed, it’s still one of the safer models as it contains a UL certified battery and charger.

Swagtron T1 Vs the T3 – What extras will I get with the T3?

The T3 isn’t available yet at the time of writing (but should be in the next few weeks). It’s going to cost approximately $500 which is $100 more than the T1. Should you go ahead and purchase the T1, or wait for the T3?

In my opinion, the T1 will be more popular, being the cheaper of the two. It’s got everything you need in a hoverboard. However, the T3 does have a few extras – some ‘bells and whistles’ that might be important to some users.

Swagtron T3 Extras:

  • Bluetooth Speakers – You can listen to music while you ride by pairing with your mobile.
  • 3 different riding modes – for learners, standard or advanced users. The T1 just has 2 modes – a learning mode and a standard user mode.
  • T3 App – use your mobile to monitor your battery status, track your route history, or control each of the modes .You can control highest speed, set acceleration and set steering sensitivity. Also use the app to access videos, the user manual, or contact customer service.
  • Built in carry strap – Although carry bags are useful, you don’t need one with this self balancing scooter as underneath there is a built in carrying strap made of enhanced strength fabric.

REVIEW CONCLUSION: SWAGTRON T1 HOVERBOARD

PROS

  • SentryShield, SafeStop, and a new battery charging management system combine to make this the safest hoverboard available.
  • New ABS shell does not scratch as easily as other models. Also, it is flame-retardant, which is nice.
  • New modes of operation to make it easier for new users.
  • The Swagtron T1 price is affordable

CONS

  • Reduced performance levels when compared to the older generation, but when compared to other current brands the T1 has some of the best performance specs.
  • The extended warranty from SwagTron directly is $99

Buy it from Amazon with an extended warranty and you’ll save more than $60 when compared to other retailers. You can also find it at Modell’s, BestBuy, eBay, and the Swagtron site.

Conclusion

The Swagway Swagtron is an exciting addition to the hoverboard market and has a lot to offer as the 1st of the ‘next generation’ self balancing scooters to hit the market.

For a while it looked like the hoverboard industry was dead in the water (cheap inferior products leading to fire and explosion stories didn’t help), but due to products like the Swagtron hoverboards made a major comeback.

Alot of people are probably still apprehensive about the potential safety issues, and the fact that they’re banned in a lot of public places may also be a deciding factor. However, it’s likely they’ll still see growth as they become even more mainstream as a personal mobility device, and as more and more companies start using higher quality, safer materials, and components, and obtain UL safety certification.

If you haven’t yet got in on the self balancing scooter craze, or you’re looking to upgrade (and you probably should if you bought a cheapie Chinese one that isn’t fire safety certified) then the T1 is probably the best there is at the moment. It is the world’s first UL2272 approved scooter and is UN38.3 certified. Also it has managed to pass UL’s original 10-ton battery crush test and their rigorous safety tests. That makes it head and shoulders above its competitors when it comes to safety and is probably one of the most advanced products of its kind at the moment. The 1-year warranty is an added bonus so in the unlikely event you experience problems you can get a repair or replacement for free. Highly recommended for scooter/hoverboard fans!

HOVERBOARD TROUBLESHOOTING

HOW TO RECALIBRATE A SELF-BALANCING SCOOTER

Your hoverboard has a red blinking light that flashes and won’t let you use it.

Maybe whenever you ride your hoverboard, it turns to one side slower than the other. That would be great if this were NASCAR. Make sure you wear a helmet when riding.

Unfortunately, this is your brand new hoverboard. Don’t worry; this is a common problem, and I’ll teach you how to fix it in a couple of minutes.

Before I get into that, though, I’d like to introduce you to the what I hope will become a resource for anyone looking to troubleshoot a hoverboard.

Since they are such a new product, little information has been created with a step-by-step guide to troubleshooting and repairing self-balancing scooters.

This article is the first post in a series: Hoverboard Troubleshooting 101: Recalibrating Your Hoverboard.

Stay tuned for more in this series. If you’ve got a different problem that is affecting your hoverboard and you can’t find an answer, send me a comment in the form below, and I’ll help you figure a solution out.

Now, let’s figure out what’s wrong with your hoverboard.

You don’t know what happened to your hoverboard. It was working fine last time you used it.

Today, when you tried turning it on it began beeping and had a red led in the center flashing.

Attempting to ride it was pointless because one side went faster than the other, or it vibrated and shook while riding.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR HOVERBOARD

Somehow your hoverboard has an imbalance in gyroscopic sensors that it uses to control itself.

The fix is easy, and will only take you a few minutes to recalibrate your hoverboard.

It’s so easy you won’t even need any tools. Just use a flat surface that is level.

IN CASE THIS DOESN’T FIX YOUR SCOOTER

There are more steps involved to troubleshooting more advanced issues. Check the Scooter repairs page to see the latest articles on repairing your hoverboard.

If you need to get a replacement part for your scooter, you’ll find the most common one’s people need to fix their hoverboards here.

Are you just wanting to make your hoverboard custom or maybe you need some scooter accessories?

CALIBRATING YOUR HOVERBOARD: THE STEPS

STEP 1 – THE WORK AREA

Find yourself a flat area to work on your hoverboard. Place your hoverboard down in the work area and check to make sure that it is level. This means:

  • Both sides of the hoverboard are even and completely matched up.
  • The left, and right sides are level and at the same height.
  • You’re just double checking your board to make sure that it level.
Self-balancing scooter calibration - step 1 - level surface

Hoverboard Calibration – Step 1 – Place your self-balancing scooter on a level surface.

STEP 2 – PRESS THE POWER BUTTON

After your hoverboard is on the level surface, press the power button once to turn your hoverboard on.

Self-balancing scooter calibration - Step 2 - Power hoverboard on.

Your hoverboard’s LEDs blink 4x in a row.

CONVINCED?

High rating Hoverboard on customer satisfaction!Click Here

STEP 3: PUTTING THE HOVERBOARD INTO CALIBRATION MODE

Locate the power button and press and hold it for 5-10 seconds.

The whole time the battery LED and the red LED should be flashing.

Hold the power button until the two lights change the pattern of how they are blinking.

As soon as they change the pattern, let go of the power button.

Self-balancing scooter calibration - Step 3 - press and hold power button till lights flash

Hoverboard calibration – Step 3 – Press and hold down the power button until the lights flash

STEP 4 – CALIBRATION COMPLETE

Now that you’ve let go of the power button push it in again and turn off your hoverboard.

That’s it; your hoverboard should be recalibrated. I told you that it was an easy fix.

Try powering your self-balancing scooter back up and see if the recalibration has helped. It should be as good as new.

SIDE NOTE

Some quick points:

  • Make sure that your hoverboard is level when you recalibrate it. If you try to calibrate it when it isn’t level, you will make the situation worse. It needs
to be level and not moving when calibrating so the sensors recenter themselves correctly.
  • You will have to recalibrate your hoverboard every few weeks as you notice the alignment begins to get out of sync.

See that was quick and painless, and this should be your first step when you need to troubleshoot a problem with your hoverboard

WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY HOVERBOARD? IT’S LIGHTS KEEP FLASHING

Do the lights on your hoverboard keep flashing at you? Do the LEDs blink whenever you turn on your hoverboard? Maybe it was working fine, and then after a quick stop you went to turn it on, and now the lights keep turning on and off?

Sound familiar? It’s like the Red Ring of Death wanted to go for a hoverboard ride with you.

Don’t worry, though; there’s some easy troubleshooting that can be done, and most likely you’ll be able to fix the issue yourself.

Maybe you should have gotten an extended protection plan for your self-balancing scooter.

In this article, I show how to diagnose problems your hoverboard has and the parts you’ll need to fix it.

First, you need to try recalibrating your hoverboard. Calibration should become your first step whenever it starts acting weird.

HOW TO CALIBRATE A HOVERBOARD

  1. Power off your hoverboard and place it on the ground in a level spot.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds let go of the power.
  3. Try turning your hoverboard on.

When you turn the power on there the LED lights will flash in a specific pattern. That will let you know the next steps that you need to do.

Multiple reminders on the DIY repair articles that read something like:  “Only attempt to repair your own hoverboard if you feel comfortable performing all of the required steps, and have some technical experience.  If your hoverboard is broken beyond a simple fix, why not consider a brand-new UL certified hoverboard from ScooterEra?  Click here to see our hoverboards

HERE’S WHAT THE LIGHTS MEAN:

THE LED FLASHES ONCE:

There’s a loose cable or connection inside the scooter. Find a comfortable area to work on your hoverboard. You’ll need a Phillips screwdriver. There should be 18 screws holes on the bottom of the scooter that you’ll need to undo. Be careful when you open it up, some models have a cable that’s connected to the part you are removing.

OPENING UP YOUR HOVERBOARD

TIP: keep two containers handy to put the screws into while you are working. There’s 10 for the outer edges of the chassis, and then 4 in the center and 4 in the corners.

After it’s opened, you’ll see the electrical cables. To make life easy on yourself, start at one corner of the hoverboard and systematically work your way around the inside. Disconnect and then reconnect any of the connections you see. After that’s done, you can tuck everything back in and replace the shell. Screw in all the screws and try powering it up.

If all goes well, you’ve fixed your hoverboard.

there are 18 screws you have to undo to open your hoverboard

First you’ll have to unscrew the 18 screws around the edge of the case.

Flashing 2-3x ‘s hard to determine what’s wrong with your hoverboard. Is it a white/yellow light? It is often more of a problem if it is a red light that is blinking. The diagnostic is showing that there is an internal circuit error and will require testing and troubleshooting. It’s fixable, but there’re too many things that it could be for me to explain it here.  If this happens to you, shoot me a message and I’ll try to help. This can sometimes happen after riding it for hours before its broken in.

Your hoverboard’s LEDs blink 4x in a row.

THE LEDS ON YOUR HOVERBOARD FLASH FOUR TIMES

If the LEDs blink four times:

Whatever have you been doing to your poor hoverboard?

You’ve managed to break one of the wheels, and you’ll need to replace it.

The blink pattern means that the wheel that’s NOT on the battery side is the damaged one.

You’ll need to order a replacement. Here’re the best replacement wheels for hoverboards.

YOUR HOVERBOARD LED FLASHES FIVE TIMES:

Run!!!!!!! Just kidding, but it’s not a good idea to go max speed.

If it’s blinking red, the wheel/motor on the side with the battery is damaged.  You can use the same wheels that I just listed above; there’s no difference between a left and right wheel.

Replacing the wheel isn’t difficult and only takes a screwdriver and a few minutes.

THE LIGHT FLASHES SIX TIMES:

THE LIGHTS BLINK SEVEN OR EIGHT TIMES

Your self-balancing scooter is more like a “good luck keeping your balance” scooter.

One of the balancing circuits inside has malfunctioned.

As with the second and third blinking patterns, it’s difficult to know what is causing the failure. This is a good value replacement circuit board kit for a hoverboard. Use this to replace all of the circuits in your hoverboard.

While you can just replace the balancing sensor circuit boards I don’t recommend you do so.

Why?

One of the circuit boards failed inside your hoverboard, which means somewhere inside of the electrical system there’s been a short circuit. If you don’t replace the whole system, there’s a very strong chance that you’ll cause the same damage to the new board that you install.

If you don’t replace the whole system, there’s a very strong chance that you’ll cause the same damage to the new board that you install.Additionally, there’s the compatibility of the old system and new part. Without inspecting your hoverboard, I can only make a general suggestion. The parts I recommend should be compatible, but they may not. By replacing all the circuit boards at one time, you can ensure that all the pieces work together.

YOUR LED FLASHES NINE TIMES

Are you wearing the proper hoverboard safety gear? What are you doing testing your hoverboard while it’s upside-down? Turn it over and try the test again.

Turn it over and try the test again.

If the LEDs flash nine times in a row the hoverboard is reporting that it is upside down. You’ll have to return it to the normal upright position and try the process all over again.

That’s all the different status codes that are displayed by most of the current models of hoverboards.

If you follow the steps listed above you should be able to figure out what you need to do to be able to fix your hoverboard yourself.

LERAY SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

The Leray Self Balancing Electric Scooter is one of the many two wheel scooters currently available that make it easier to move around seamlessly and energy-efficiently. But is it really worth its salt compared to all the other similar products on the market? In this brief review, we take a closer look at an electric scooter that has been touted as the one of the best in speed, maneuverability and balance.

Scooter Overview

The scooter is designed to transcend transportation particularly focusing on practical movement. It is simple to learn and easy to ride. In addition, it is light-weight and compact in size, meaning that it is quite easy to transport it when it is not transporting you. It can manage a top speed in the low teens (mph) or roughly 8km/h with a powerful 1,000W motor. It handles 1-hour charge and this can last for up to 5 hours or a distance of 15kms on the road.

Leray’s power comes from its quality core materials. Which in addition to making it powerful go a long way in maintaining a quiet and energy efficient unit. To top it up, it has an intelligent battery management system which independently controls the working status of the battery thereby ensuring efficient performance, stability and safety.

One thing you will like about this scooter is that it works both uphill and downhill (it automatically recharges the battery when you’re riding downhill). Its pressure sensitive motor is conveniently located connected to an axle giving the rider an easy time on the road. Having trouble keeping balance? No need to worry as this scooter only requires you to press your feet against its sides as your remain calm and relaxed to enjoy the ride.

WHAT COMES IN THE BOX?

  • 1 electric scooter
  • 1 Instruction manual detailing how to use the scooter, along with instructions on how to ride a self-balancing scooter.
  • 1 battery charger for the scooter

From their site:

The product is packaged in a well-fitting and secure rectangular box. Each package contains 1 unit of the self-balance scooter, battery charger and user manual.

How It Works

Leray Self Balancing Electric Scooter is pretty easy to operate. Its instructions are quite easy and straight-forward. For instance, if you want to move forward, you only need to lean slightly forward. Likewise, to move backward or slow down, you need to lean backward. To turn left, you simply turn your right foot slightly downward. To turn right, you point slightly downward with your left foot.

Worrying about battery running out? No need to worry anymore because this scooter has an LED-lit battery icon conveniently located on its left flank facing upwards. Next to the battery indicator to the right is the function light which essentially brings you up to speed with the device’s prevailing mode of operation.

Not only is this scooter a fantastic personal transporter, it is also capable for icebreakers who are totally new to skateboarding. It is stylish, simple, highly portable and presentable. The system is further enhanced with three Gyroscopes and Gravity Accelerators; features that make it quite flexible and stable.

Pros

  • Warranty is provided for those with genuine products
  • Superb customer service
  • Advanced motor which operates quietly and efficiently
  • Equipped with smart system to enhance motions left/right/backward/forward
  • Ease and comfortable to maneuver; thanks to its turning support technology
  • Comes with genuine LG battery which never disappoints
  • The scooter is light-weight and can be easily carried around in one hand with reasonable ease
  • Nice solid build, feels stable
  • It’s tires are made of solid rubber, you don’t have to worry about getting a flat

Cons

Small qualms with the otherwise perfect device are that while the original device is 99% perfect, there are a few fake replicas being sold in the market. Such are associated with complaints of poor battery life and poor stability. In order to get the right deal, it’s important to buy from a legitimate seller or through the Leray Group website.

Verdict

This is a good scooter, no doubt about it. It is well built, stable, durable and reliable. Best of all, it is backed by a smart system that ensures the riders safety and convenience any time. But as with any other human-made product, a few flaws might be experienced from time to time. Luckily, the company provides warranty cover for genuine buyers in case of such problems.

RAZOR HOVERTRAX 2.0 REVIEW

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NEW AND IMPROVED HOVERBOARD

Razor USA recently released the Razor Hovertrax 2.0 hoverboard. They have added several new features to this self-balancing scooter, all designed to make it a safer and better quality product. See what these new features are and how the Hovertrax 2.0 compares to other hoverboard brands.

BOTTOM LINE

It might not be the fastest hoverboard, but the Hovertrax is probably one of the best hoverboards to get for kids. It will let them do anything they would want to with a hoverboard, and the slower speed may keep them out of accidents.

Hovertrax 2.0 Features Two New Control Modes

The specs for the Hovertrax 2.0

Several color choices are available for the Hovertrax 2.0: green, blue, red, black, and white.

The Hovertrax hoverboard comes in 5 different colors: green, red, blue, black, and white.

HOVERTRAX 2.0 SPECS

Top Speed6 mi/h (9.5 km/h)
Speed is one of the most important stats of any hoverboard. The Hovertrax 2.0’s top speed is 6 miles per hour. This is surprisingly slow, especially when it’s compared to other brands which average around eight mi/h. That’s 25% faster.

Battery Life60 minutes
After speed, the next important stat for any smart balance board has to be the battery life. How long the battery lasts depends on upon several factors: rider weight, temperature, active usage. The battery capacity for the Hovertrax is estimated to be 60 minutes.

Weight Limit220 lbs. (100 kg.)
The Hovertrax 2.0 weight limit is 220 lbs. This is the standard maximum rider weight for self-balancing scooters.

Product Dimensions24.5 in. L x 9 in. W x 8.75 in.
The Hovertrax is the standard size for a hoverboard with 6.5″ wheels. It measures: 24.5” L x 9” W x 8.75” H

Weight27 lbs. (12.2 kg.)
Unloaded the Hovertrax weighs 27 lbs.

Available Colors5 different colors
The Hovertrax is available in 5 different colors: White, Black, Blue, Green, and Red.

FEATURES OF THE RAZOR HOVERBOARD

Auto Self-Balancing Sensor
An improved self-balancing sensor is used in the Hovertrax 2.0, it uses gyroscopic technology to ensure that the rider always maintains their balance.

New Operation Modes
Two new modes of operation allow the performance of the Hovertrax to be adjusted for riders of every skill level. Use the training mode if you’re just learning how to ride a hoverboard. For those riders who have more experience you can unlock more performance from the Hovertrax by using the standard mode.

Shatter-Resistant Plastic Shell
A new polymer is used for the hoverboard shell. It’s shatter-resistant and helps to protect the inner components from accidental damage while riding. Because it’s a more durable material, the scratches and scrapes that were common on the first generation Hovertrax should be prevented.

Better Anti-Slip Foot Pads
Improved anti-slip foot pads let riders maintain their grip on the hoverboard while riding.

LED Power Indicator
The LED power indicator shows you how much power you’ve got left before you need a charge. It also shows which operation mode your Hovertrax is in.

Fender Bumper Protection
Fender bumpers offer protection from scratches and scrapes

Powerful and Silent Motors
A silent 350 Watt motor powers each wheel of the Hovertrax. These allow you to cruise at speeds of up to 6 mph.

This makes the Razor Hovertrax unique, you can replace the dead battery for a fully charged one.

The gyroscopic sensor inside the Hovertrax automatically causes it to maintain it’s riders balance.

UL-2272 CERTIFIED

LED Headlights provide riders with extra visibility

WHAT’S DIFFERENT?

The Razor Hovertrax Electric Self-Balancing Scooter is a groundbreaking product. It can’t be compared to the other hoverboards that you see everywhere blowing up or catching on fire.

The engineers that were used to design and build the Hovertrax incorporated several different features to help it be the safest hoverboard that you can buy.

  • Twin hub motors (350 W peak, 130 W cruising speed)
  • Gyro sensing tech that is so silent and smooth that it’s almost as if it was a real hoverboard with wheels.
  • Top speed of 6 MPH, that’s faster than you can walk!
  • Approximately 60 minutes of run time to give you plenty of time to zoom around.
  • It’s the only hoverboard that has a quick-swap battery so that you can continue riding for as long as you want.

As an added safety feature, it has an anti-slip grip to the top of the Razor self-balancing scooter. This serves the dual purpose of providing a sure grip to the rider and also helps them to maintain a stable footing while maneuvering and steering.

This is the perfect hoverboard/self-balancing electric scooter for kids over 13. The Hovertrax has a weight limit of 220 lbs.

YOU CAN DO SO MANY TRICKS ON THIS HOVERBOARD.

Want to spin 360 degrees in place? No problem. Just shift your weight and you’ll start moving in a circle. Shift your weight more, you’ll move faster. Shift it back to a neutral-ish position and you’ll slow down. It’s that easy.

A lithium-ion battery takes a quick recharge of only about 2 hours . There’s a battery charge indicator on the chassis. In a glimpse, you’ll be able to see the current charge level and decide if you need to find a power outlet.

Razor Scooters stands behind the products that they make. They believe this is the best electric hoverboard scooter and want you to know this also.

You don’t have to worry about how safe is this hoverboard. It’s been tested by the Underwriter’s Laboratory to pass the UL-2272 self-balancing scooter electrical systems testing standards.

Additionally, the Razor Hovertrax comes with a 90-day manufacturer’s warranty.

The UL-2272 Certified Hovertrax 2.0

The Hovertrax 2.0 is UL-2272 certified, making it a safe hoverboard to buy.

PROS AND CONS

WHAT I LIKE:

  • The replaceable battery – as long as you have an extra battery you can keep riding.
  • Two operation modes – these allow both skilled and unskilled riders to have a good time with the Hovertrax.
  • Razor USA is a well-known company that’s primary focus is scooters and other rideable toys. The Hovertrax is a good product that should only get better.
  • The Hovertrax price is comparable to other brands with the same specs and features.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE

  • Battery life is estimated to be about 60 minutes, that’s not really all that long. Also I haven’t been able to find where to get the additional batteries.
  • The Hovertrax has a top speed of 6 mph, most other hoverboards are 8 mph or faster. However, scooters are Razor’s entire focus as a company. If they have a product that’s slower than other brands it’s probably because they have experience from their other electric scooters and choose to offer one that was slower on purpose.
  • It only comes with a 90-day warranty. I recommend buying a Hovertrax on Amazon and then buying the additional SquareTrade extended warranty.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW FAST IS THE HOVERTRAX?

The Hovertrax has a top speed of 6 mph (10 kph)

WHO MAKES IT?

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is made by Razor USA LLC

HOW TO RIDE?

The Hovertrax 2.0, like all self-balancing scooters, responds to the rider’s foot movements. Tilt your foot forward, and it moves forwards. Tilt your foot backward, and it moves backward. The amount you move your foot is the degree that the speed increases or decreases.

HOW TO CONTROL IT

Increase your speed by tilting your foot downwards. Decrease how fast you’re going by tilting your foot upwards.

WHAT’S THE HOVERTRAX PRICE?

The Razor Hovertrax price varies, but it usually is between $400-$500 depending on the model and seller.

In conclusion

WHO SHOULD BUY A HOVERTRAX?

The Hovertrax 2.0 is a better product that the original version that was sold by Razor. The first generation suffered from being overpriced and underperforming.

The Hovertrax 2.0 doesn’t have these problems. In addition to the Hovertrax price being reasonable at $400-$500 (depending on the model and where you buy one from), it’s specs are on the same level as most other hoverboards.

The replaceable battery is a unique feature that I haven’t seen any other hoverboards include. This benefits the rider as long as they have a replacement battery for the Hovertrax.

At the time of writing this Hovertrax review, I haven’t been able to find them sold anywhere.

Another feature that I haven’t seen much is the two different modes of operation. The two modes are great because you can ease into the full capabilities of a Hovertrax as you become accustomed to riding. That makes it a safer hoverboard for new riders to learn how to ride.

Experienced riders will like the Hovertrax as well because of the more durable hoverboard shell and fender bumpers. If you’ve seen any of the first-gen hoverboards, or read their reviews, you’ve probably heard about how easy it was to scratch them. That should be a thing of the past now with the new shell material.

Hoverboards are not only a fun way to get from one place to another but can also be quite entertaining. You can enjoy your favorite music now as you zip through your neighborhood. Thanks to hoverboard manufacturers employing bluetooth speakers that allow you to sync your phone and listen to your playlist. So if you are looking for a hoverboard that allows you to blast your favorite tunes, keep reading!

BEST BLUETOOTH HOVERBOARDS TO PLAY MUSIC WHILE RIDING

SWAGTRON T5880

SWAGTRON T5880

The Swagtron T5880 is the ultimate entertaining hoverboard in the market today. It provides riders with great control and speed and comes with speakers that allow you to listen to your jams as you ride around. It has the capacity to go up to 7.5 mph while also letting you go up steep hill at angles up to 30 degrees. On a full charge the hoverboard can last for up to 8 miles, which is more than most riders go on a trip. Recharging time isn’t too long either, it takes about 1 and a half hour for complete recharge. So if you are looking for a hoverboard that packs power and allows you to enjoy as you ride around then Swagtron T5880 is it.

HOVERHEART HOVERBOARD TWO-WHEEL SELF BALANCING ELECTRIC SCOOTER

HOVERHEART HOVERBOARD TWO-WHEEL SELF BALANCING ELECTRIC SCOOTER

The Hoverheart Hoverboard Two-Wheel Self balancing Electric Scooter is one of the flashiest hoverboard you will find. It is completely decked out with LED lights on the front and back. If you can look past that or maybe you want something flashy, the hoverboard is great on performance also. It comes with speakers so you can blast music as you paint the town red. One thing we didn’t like about the hoverboard is the fact that it takes a little longer for it to charge, roughly 2.5-3 hours.

XTREMEPOWERUS SELF BALANCING HOVERBOARD

XTREMEPOWERUS SELF BALANCING HOVERBOARD

Another flashy hoverboard, the XtremepowerUS Self Balancing Hoverboard will definitely turn heads on the street. If not for the multi-coloured LED lights on the wheels, front and back then definitely the loudness of the speakers it comes with. It isn’t the fastest hoverboard in the market but it does provide enough power to allow you to have a thrilling ride. We really liked the foot pads on this hoverboard as it had a lot of traction and was responsive.

LEVIT8ION HOVERBOARD SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

LEVIT8ION HOVERBOARD SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

The Levit8ion Hoverboard Self balancing Scooter is sub-par as far as performance goes. It is a decent hoverboard in terms of speed with speeds up to 9 mph but we didn’t really like the control of the hoverboard. With that said, it does have a lot of power in the battery as it allows you to ride up to 10-12 miles per charge. That is more than any other hoverboard on our list. So we recommend you fill your phone with your favorite songs and then some if you decide to go with the Levit8ion Hoverboard Self balancing Scooter cause it’s going to be a long ride.

BLUETOOTH HOVERBOARDS DOUBLING AS HOME SPEAKERS

While nice to have on hand, many hoverboards are too bulky to really use as home speakers around the house. These two options have high speaker quality, compact features that won’t take up too much space indoors, and just happen to be able to carry you where you want to go:

1. BLUEFIN HOVERBOARD

This metallic gold hoverboard is sure to be a statement speaker in your house!

2. SKQUE X1L6.5 UL2272 SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

YOUR SEARCH FOR A SELF-BALANCING SCOOTER WITH BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS IS OVER.

This is what jumps out to my eye when I look at the features of the  Jetson V6 Self-Balancing Scooter with Bluetooth Speakers.

  • The Jetson scooter uses two sensors, along with the wheels to automatically balance itself and the user.
  • It’s water resistant (not WATER-PROOF) so you can use it in wet conditions. This doesn’t mean that you can take it for a spin in during the next hurricane. This is not an off-road scooter, so don’t play with it in mud or water.
  • There’s a Samsung lithium-ion battery.
  • Includes Bluetooth speakers that will sync with your phone so you can play your favorite music while riding the Glyro Turbo.
  • The steel frame and 300 lbs. max weight limit.

Like the other scooters and hoverboards that are currently available, the Jetson V6 Scooter is fast and can move in any direction just by changing your balance while riding. It uses an innovative balance system to help minimise the chances of you falling while riding the V6.

JETSON V6 SMART SELF-BALANCING ELECTRIC SCOOTER FROM TARGET.COM.

Recently announced as the exclusive brand of Target.com, the Jetson V6 was known as the Glyro Turbo Hoverboard from Jetson Electric Bike Co. I thought the Glyro/Jetson Electric brands had gone out of business. I was wrong, however, and Jetson is now the Target.com in-house brand.

A closer look:

  • 6.5″ smart self-balancing scooter
  • Ten mph top speed.
  • Estimated range approx. 15 mi. on a 2-hr. charge time.
  • Includes the free Jetson RIDE READY-APP
  • Bluetooth Speakers and LED lights
  • Three modes of operation, allowing you to adjust speed and sensitivity to rider’s skill level.
  • It’ll support a rider of up to 300 lbs.

The Jetson V6 hoverboard is very impressive. Built with Samsung components, this is a hoverboard that should perform very nicely.  It includes Bluetooth speakers, LED lights. Several modes of operation, a hoverboard app for iOS and Android (once I get a download link, I’ll include it here).  It’s also one of the only hoverboards with a weight limit of 300 lbs.

The Jetson V6 is only sold online at Target.com

WHO SHOULD BUY A JETSON V6?

The Jetson V6 has raised the standard (at least so far) for what you should expect from any hoverboard that you buy.  For $400, you’re getting an 8″ hoverboard that:

  • has Bluetooth speakers
  • adjustable LED lights
  • control your hoverboard with an app on your phone.
  • 1-year manufacturer’s warranty
  • a steel frame and a self-balancing scooter that can hold 300 lbs.

That’s only a few points I listed, and each of those adds lots of value to the hoverboard.

Currently, you can get a Powerboard for under $350, but it is just a basic hoverboard. Why not pay an extra $50 and get the Jetson from Target. You’ll be much happier that you did choose to spend the extra bit of money.

The same could be said of the Swagtron T1, T3 and the Hovertrax 2.0. Each of them has less performance, and they are all the same price.

I will be getting more information together to write a much more in-depth review of the Jetson V6.

How to Pair Hoverboard Bluetooth Device to iPhone & Android

The newest hoverboards come with a Bluetooth pairing feature, which enables you to play music from your iPhone or Android through the hoverboard’s own speakers. Music played through your hoverboard’s high-quality speakers is sure to enhance your riding experience.

Who doesn’t want to blast some tunes while on the go? Alternatively, Bluetooth-enabled hoverboards can be used as speakers around the house – just be sure to put your device in park first!

Built-in Bluetooth options have increased the user experience immensely, but, like all things tech, they can sometimes add a bit of complexity to the mix. Once you find yourself in possession of a Bluetooth hoverboard with a built-in speaker, you may find yourself wondering how to sync it with your device.

That’s where we come in.

PAIRING BLUETOOTH HOVERBOARD WITH IPHONE

Step One: Turn your Bluetooth hoverboard on.

Step Two: Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone.

Step Three: Select ‘Bluetooth’ under ‘Settings’.

Step Four: Select your hoverboard from the list of Bluetooth capable devices – it will typically have a corresponding name to the company that makes your hoverboard, or the model name of your hoverboard with a series of numbers attached. You may need to wait several minutes while your phone’s Bluetooth locates the hoverboard brands.

Step Five: Follow instructions on the iPhone’s screen to sync your hoverboard with your iPhone. Depending on the maker of your hoverboard, it will make a sound to confirm that it has been synced.

Step Six: Open any music mobile app, such as iTunes or Spotify, and press play!

PAIRING BLUETOOTH HOVERBOARD WITH ANDROID

Step One: Tap ‘Settings’ in your Android phone

Step Two: Go to ‘Bluetooth’ and confirm that it is enabled. If it is not, swipe to do so

Step Three: Turn your Bluetooth hoverboard on. Most Bluetooth-enabled hoverboards will make a tonal noise upon powering up

Step Four: Once the hoverboard is on, look under ‘Bluetooth’ on your Android phone to locate the device. It may take several minutes for the phone to locate the hoverboard brands as before with the iPhone

Step Five: Tap the name of your hoverboard in the list and follow on-screen instructions. Depending on the model of your hoverboard it will make a sound to confirm that it has been successfully synced to your Android

Step Six: Open any music mobile app on your Android phone and press play!

TROUBLESHOOTING HOVERBOARD PAIRING WITH IPHONE

Nothing is worse than going through the pairing steps to find that your devices are not syncing! Should this happen to you, first confirm that your phone’s Bluetooth wireless technology is enabled. Then double check that the hoverboard is turned on and fully charged.

If Bluetooth connection is still not occurring:

Step One: Make sure that the two devices are close to each other

Step Two: Check that your iPhone’s iOS is up to date. Older iPhones, such as the iPhone 4, may not be able to pair with Bluetooth hoverboards

If your hoverboard did connect to your iPhone and then stopped working:

Step One: Make sure the hoverboard has an adequate charge

Step Two: If still not working, disconnect the hoverboard and remove it from the Bluetooth devices list. Turn off the iPhone’s Bluetooth wireless technology and the hoverboard, then turn both on again and reconnect following the instructions above

TROUBLESHOOTING HOVERBOARD PAIRING WITH ANDROID

Android version 4.3 or higher works well with all Bluetooth hoverboards. If your Android phone is operating on an older system, check the specifications of your hoverboard or potential purchase to verify that it is compatible with your device.

If your hoverboard is compatible with your Android, take the following steps:

Step One: Make sure that the Bluetooth setting is enabled on your Android

Step Two: Check the charge of your Bluetooth hoverboard. Insufficient battery life may interfere with its ability to connect to your Android phone

Step Three: Make sure the two devices are in close proximity to each other in order to connect

Step Four: Turn off both devices and power back up to reconnect

Troubleshooting Continued

If you’ve tried all of the steps above and nothing seems to be working, here are some additional tips you can try:

  1. Turn off all other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity. Only the hoverboard and your phone should have their Bluetooth capability turned on while trying to establish a connection
  2. Your WiFi router can also interfere with the Bluetooth functionality. Attempt to pair far away from your WiFi router
  3. Check to see if a Driver may be needed to facilitate connection. Techlicious suggests googling the name of your hoverboard device with the word “driver” to find the appropriate option
  4. Check with the manufacturer of your hoverboard if all else fails

Conclusion

While hoverboards with Bluetooth are usually the exact same as a regular hoverboard, having the Bluetooth receiver module and the built-in speakers are definitely a plus if you enjoy your music while on the go.

Swagway X1 Review: Truth About The Swagway Hoverboard

The Swagway X1 hands-free smart hoverboard is the fastest and most customizable self-balancing electric scooter available. Own one of these and you’ll move in a way you never dreamed possible. The Swagway X1 Hands-free Smart Board was the most popular hoverboard for Christmas 2016.

Introducing the Swagway X1

swagway x1

The Swagway X1 is very popular as a brand and as a product. It’s been widely featured in the media on news programs, chat shows, and on many top tech review websites. But is it really as good as people say? And is it actually safe? Touted as the “next step in the evolution of transportation” let’s take a closer look at what this product is about

WHY IS THE SWAGWAY SCOOTER A BEST SELLER?

Quite simply this thing has sold so well because it’s one of the fastest hoverboards available, has a low price overall, and is a safe model that won’t explode or catch on fire.

An excellent job was done in designing the this, and they are well on their way to becoming the leader of the self-balancing scooter industry. What makes it better than other models? First, it has the highest top speed compared to any of the other types of self-balancing scooter on the market. Here’s a quick sample of other models that you can buy:

ModelListed Top Speed
Swagway X110 mph
Hovertrax4.9 mph
Monorover R26.2 mph
IO Hawk6.2 mph
Swagtron T18 mph
Powerboard8 mph
Skque6.2 mph

As you can see, it is 25-50% faster than any of these models.

Speed is not the most important criteria to consider, but it isn’t something to ignore, either. When one of the cool things about owning a self-balancing scooter is cruising around, how fast you go matters. When you’re cruising, it is more fun to be in the fast lane, then being the person who’s slowing everyone down? Need more reasons?

WHAT ARE THE X1’S SPECS?

The Swagway Amazon stocks have a top speed of 12 MPH On a full battery it will travel more than 10 miles. It weighs 24 lbs. and can charge in 2 hrs.

WHAT’S THE WHEEL SIZE?

It has a wheel size of 6.5″, which is the same as most other models, though 8 and 10-inch wheeled versions are becoming more widespread.

DOES IT HAVE INFLATABLE TIRES?

It has solid rubber tires, no need to worry about getting a flat. I’ve already discussed the high top speed, other key specs that stand out: the great range and short charge time are very nice. Lack of a remote control and speakers is not anything to be concerned about for me. You may be different. And that it has an average review on Amazon of 4.1 with more than 360 reviews.

WHY IS THIS A BETTER BUY THAN OTHER BRANDS?

The second thing that’s great is the awesome price. When other models of hands-free smart board sell for $1800, (here’s looking at you IO Hawk), this is a steal. Even if you weren’t considering the IO Hawk, many other models are still an expensive $600-$800.

Maybe you’ve found that you can get a different brand of smart hands-free board for $200 elsewhere. Excellent deal finding skills! But… Sometimes you get what you pay for. The cheapest hoverboard/self-balancing scooters you can find are about $200.

But if you review what you are getting when you pay $200, you find yourself with a scooter that has 30% less speed, 25% less battery capacity, and a 30-day warranty. For me, the spending a little bit more cash gives me something that’s 2x better? That’s money well spent.

ARE THERE ANY DRAWBACKS?

The biggest drawback to this smart board is that they used plastic for the chassis that isn’t difficult to be scratched. This complaint may be from people who have unreasonable expectations. There’s only a 1.2 in. the gap between the bottom of the scooter and the surface it is being ridden on. Couple that low ground clearance, with a vehicle going 12 mph, and any rough terrain could hit the bottom of the scooter. While I don’t think that the bottom of your scooter will be inspected, I understand how people would not want to show wear and tear.

Another drawback mentioned, was the glue used to adhere the rubber bumpers onto the chassis was of poor quality. With several reports that the: You could use double-stick tape or even a good glue and fix this issue, solving this minor drawback.

There is now a vendor on Amazon selling replacement bumpers. They are somewhat interchangeable between the different brands, and a quick fix.

The final drawback I see is the same top speed I listed as a PRO. Several people complained that the speed of the unit is too high. There are several complaints that the speed of the unit and the riders getting into accidents or hurting themselves. There’s also the countless videos you’ve probably seen. This is why if you will be using a smart balancing board, no matter which brand, you need to be wearing adequate safety gear. This includes a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards. The simple addition of this safety equipment will allow you to keep on riding a self-balancing wheeled board for a long time.

THE PROS AND CONS

What we like

  • The Swagway X1 comes with a 1 year standard warranty. If it proves to be defective in any way (material or workmanship) within 1 year of purchase you can get a repair or replacement. It doesn’t cover accidental damage caused by improper use, poor maintenance, accidents or road hazards. You can however purchase an additional 1 year warranty to cover this if you want an extra layer of protection for your hoverboard.
  • The safety features such as UL certification for the battery and charger are a really important feature for self balancing scooters which contain lithium batteries. The Swagway also contains a high quality branded battery rather than a cheap, generic one (these can cause problems).
  • It’s affordable! Most people don’t want to pay $1200+ for a scooter and if you’re buying more than one (your kids aren’t going to want to share!) you can get 3 Swagway’s for the price of a big brand name model.
  • It’s pretty heavy (28lbs), which for the most part is a good thing, especially for younger users as that makes it safer to ride, and is strong and durable. Of course that also be a bad thing if you have to carry it for any distance, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you purchase a carry bag for it.
  • Fast and FREE shipping. The self balancing scooter is shipped from their US warehouse within 3 days of receiving cleared payment.

What we don’t like

  • There’s little not to like about this product, Swagway really seem to have pulled out all the stops to create a scooter that’s probably the best on the market (for the price) at the moment. However, there is one little problem (or a major problem if you don’t live in the United States). Unfortunately, the Swagway is only available to US customers at the moment – they don’t yet ship internationally.
  • Although we liked the 30 day limited return policy (which means you can change your mind and send the product back if for some weird reason you decide it’s not for you), there IS a restocking fee. And of course for obvious reasons you have to ship it back at your own expense.
  • There are a range of colors, but not all are available all the time. Some colors get sold out quicker than others so you may have to wait and keep checking for stock if there’s a specific color that you really want.

Is there an age recommendation?

Swagway don’t give any age recommendation as such (well I haven’t seen one). The general recommendation I’ve seen for these scooters is that they’re for over 14’s, but I think if your kid is reasonably tall they could probably use one from around the age of 10. Obviously you have to decide for yourself whether or  not you think they’ll be able to handle it and these things are quite heavy.

There’s probably no upper age as long as you’re relatively strong and fit. I’ve heard of many older people using them as personal transportation devices to help them get around longer distances. Other than that, people of all ages should be able to enjoy using these scooters.

Customer Feedback

quality star review thumb up illustration design over a white background

There used to be a ton of great reviews on Amazon when the product was available there but unfortunately they no longer sell the product and listing has been deleted.

If you want to see a real Swagway X1 review there are plenty of reviews and comments on the official website. At the time of writing there are just under 500 reviews, and the average rating seems to be 5 star! In general people seem to be raving about how much fun it is, although after having a read through the reviews they’re mostly just positive comments rather than actual detailed reviews.

A few mentioned they were happy with the fast shipping, other customers mentioned the excellent customer support. Most people say they mastered them really quickly (usually takes about 20-30 mins of riding to get REALLY comfortable with them) and a lot of reviewers say they either gave or got one as a very well received gift (they’re very popular for birthdays, Christmas, graduation gifts etc.)

Swagway X1 In The Media

The Swagway is endorsed by many of the top tech websites such as PCmag, TheWireCutter and Techtimes among others. Its reputation far exceeds most other brands on the market.

Ellen DeGeneres gave one to Justin Bieber as a gift on The Ellen Show. At a later stage she also gifted one each to Sophia Grace and Rose (along with helmets of course!)

Safety When Riding

The Swagway also has a dedicated ‘learning mode’ which makes it a relatively safe model to learn on for people of all ages.

Remember, no scooter is 100% safe when riding it – every rideable  comes with a certain amount of risk, and people do have accidents if they don’t use them properly. Muscle injuries, lacerations and broken bones are just some of the things that can (and do) happen. The user manual contains a number of safety warnings and recommendations on how to use the product safely. Adhere to them and you shouldn’t have any problems.

WHO SHOULD BUY ONE?

In the broadest sense, everyone who gets a Swagway will enjoy it. It depends on your motivations in getting one. Are you the type that wants to get a self-balancing scooter because it’s the newest toy around? Then this is the perfect hoverboard for you.

Maybe you’re a college student looking at self-balancing scooters for college next semester. A Swagway scooter should be the only model to consider. You can wake up ten minutes before class, throw clothes on, grab your books and zip out the door.

With its top speed of 12 mph, you can run around campus and get to class in no time. No need to wait for a parking spot or the shuttle, and after school, you can ride back home in style. Or do you want this as a gift for someone? They’ll be happy you got them one.

NOT CONVINCED ABOUT THE SWAGWAY X1 HANDS-FREE SMART BOARD?

Here’re some of the competitors and how they compare:

THE SWAGWAY VS. THE POWERBOARD

You can see my full review of the Powerboard via that link. Overall, the Powerboard and the X1 are very similar. However, when you look closely at the specs of both models, you begin to see which is the best. The Swagway is faster than the Powerboard. It also has more range.

The X1’s battery and the powerboards are the same; the Powerboard is just configured to go slower and thus has a battery that lasts longer. Read both my review of the Swagway scooter and my Powerboard review and decide for yourself. Either one is a great buy, but for me, the Swagway X1 is the best hoverboard.

THE SWAGWAY X1 VS. THE RAZOR HOVERTRAX

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is much better than the first generation hoverboard from Razor. But for all that it’s a much better hoverboard than the previous generation, the new Hovertrax is still pretty underwhelming.

COMPARING THE SWAGTRON T1 AND THE SWAGWAY X1

Swagway, Swagton, Swegway, they all sound the same. While there’s a difference between Segway and these brands, Swagway and Swagtron are the same company.  They’ve just changed names.

As for the T1 vs. the X1, there are some significant differences. The Swagtron T1 is the newest generation of hoverboard and was released with new features that allow it to be UL-2272 certified. The X1 has the same battery pack, which is the main feature of the T1. Otherwise, the X1 and the T1 are very similar. However, the X1 is a faster hoverboard than the T1. For many people, that higher top speed in the X1 is the best reason to buy an X1.

THE MONOROVER R2 VS. THE SWAGWAY X1

The R2 and the X1 are almost identical in features. While the X1 has a listed top range of a few miles further than the R2, these are values that are created in lab environments, not the real world.  Realistically, these two hoverboards will probably perform the same.  You can find out more about the R2 here.

Verdict

I’ve spent a lot of time researching the best hoverboard scooters over the last few months and I can safely say that this is one of the best I’ve seen. I started out with a slightly more expensive monorover r2 myself, but the Swagway X1 just pips it to the post with slightly less foot pedal sensitivity it’s easier to control (it even comes with a ‘learning mode’). It’s also cheaper than what I paid for the Monorover, although I believe they’ve dropped their price since I purchased.

The safety of a self balancing scooter is probably one of the most important features as they contain lithium batteries which can spark or overheat (causing bigger problems) if they’re not properly safety certified. This is where the Swagway wins over many other brands because it’s one of the few companies that has made safety, high quality materials, and testing their priority. They are meticulous in their design and workmanship, meaning that you get a top quality, relatively safe product and for a very reasonable price.  Their customer service is very responsive too should you have any questions or want to discuss safety with them in more depth.

Now I’m not saying that these so called ‘hoverboards’ are 100% perfect just yet – they’re still new to the market and I’m sure there will be a lot of improvements made to them over the coming months. You may want to wait longer before purchasing to see what happens with the newer boards and updated safety features. However, if you don’t want to wait, the Swagway looks to me to be one of the safest, most affordable, and fun options available right now.

Hoverboard Charger

Hoverboards, also known as self-balancing electric scooters, are quickly becoming one of the popular forms of transport for kids and young adults alike. These two-wheeled inventions are now a common sight on sidewalks, in malls, and in most other places too. If the battery on your hoverboard has run out and you’re in need of a charger, nothing but the best will work.

There are many reasons why you might need a new charger or adapter, including moving to a new country with different power supply specifications, or the very simple, time-honored motive– the dog ate your old one. Whatever the reason, these are the ten best hoverboard battery chargers you can buy.

Warning: Always look at the power requirement of your board before you buy a charger – a large power differential could cause your charger to overheat, become a fire hazard, or even wreak havoc on your board’s internal circuitry.

FANCY BUYING 3-PRONG SELF BALANCING SCOOTER CHARGER

This is one of the best chargers you can get for your hoverboard, simply because it is universal. The adapter is made to fit the charging ports of hoverboards from all manufacturers, as long as they are of the 3-pin kind. The adapter comes with a unique perk – a LED indicator is present on the power brick. This light notifies you when charging has been completed, reducing the risk of your hoverboard overcharging or overheating. It has a year’s warranty too, which can be useful in case of any defects you spot while using it. It charges quickly, efficiently, and safely.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

PHONELEX BATTERY CHARGER FOR SCOOTERS

Versatility is one of the prime benefits of the Phonelex charger for your self-balancing scooter. The company ships the charger with a plug that is designed to fit the sockets in your country. For example, the EU version of this adapter and charger has the standard square-pin design for its plug, whereas the US version has the flat plug pin design. It charges faster and better than most hoverboards’ factory default charger. The power brick is equipped with fuses to protect your board from overcharging, overloading, and short-circuiting. The shorter cable length on this unit is probably the only disadvantage in an otherwise great product!

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

BAA SHOP TWO WHEELS MINI SMART SELF BALANCING SCOOTER ADAPTER

BAA Shop has outdone itself with the adapter design on this unit. A common issue buyers of these chargers have is their lack of compatibility with certain hoverboard models. This particular adapter is designed to be universally compatible as long as your board has a 3-pin charging port. It features an indicator light that informs you of the charge status – red for charging and green for fully charged. It has a fast charge time and is quite safe to use. Take care not to overcharge with this one, though, as it can overheat if you leave it connected for too long.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

EVAPLUS 42V 2A POWER ADAPTER POWERFAST 3-PRONG INLINE CONNECTOR

You won’t go wrong with the Evaplus Power Adapter for hoverboards and electric scooters. It has an output of 42V, which means that it won’t work with some models of scooters and boards that have a 24V rating. Remember to identify the power requirement of your hoverboard before you buy any chargers! If you have a 42V model, though, this adapter is universally compatible and allows for fast charging on the go if you can find a wall socket. The adapter tends to heat up during charging but is equipped with overheating, overcharging, overloading, and short-circuit protection. It also has a handy indicator light that glows red or green based on the status of the charge.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

UPLUS HOVER BOARD ADAPTER

This is probably one of the best brands and models of hoverboard scooter adapters that you can get. It is compatible with nearly every 42V model of self-balancing scooter on the market right now, including the notoriously hard-to-find Swagtron series. The charger is very light, weighing just over half a pound, and is small enough to be carried in a scooter case without being bumped around. It charges very fast indeed, taking just two hours to fully juice up a standard board. Most people who experience this charger steer clear of their original manufacturer unit going forward. The “no questions asked” return policy ensures your satisfaction when using it.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

TAGALAN LI-ION BATTERY CHARGER

The Tagalan Battery Charger for hoverboards and scooters is a very high-quality piece of equipment that is a must-have in your inventory. It works with any power supply from 100V to 240V, so you can use it when traveling abroad too. The charger is compatible with all 42V hoverboards but also works with 36V models so you won’t need to worry about damaging those boards with this unit. Full lithium ion battery charges are complete within a couple of hours and it is very safe indeed.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

MAXFIND TWO WHEELS MINI SMART SELF BALANCING SCOOTER UL CHARGER

This compact, versatile charger is compatible with all models of hoverboards that have a 3-pin charging port. It is UL certified for safety and quality and is packed with features including a LED light that indicates the charging status when in operation. This device features a self-adjusting IC inside the power brick to adapt to various scooter requirements.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

WYNESS 100-240V 50/60HZ 42V 2A ELECTRIC SCOOTER BATTERY CHARGER

This is one of the safest chargers you can buy. It comes with polarity protection, short-circuit protection, overloading and overcharging protection, and overheating protection. It also has a LED indicator to tell you when your board is done charging. It charges quickly, safely, and efficiently – what more could you want?

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

U-GOFORST 42V 2A 3-PRONG INLINE UNIVERSAL LITHIUM BATTERY POWER CHARGER

As chargers go, this device is one of the most adaptable. It has smart adjustment features built into it so that voltages like 12V, 24V, and 36V can be supplied along with the standard 42V for your hoverboard. The only issue with this charger is that it isn’t universally compatible – only models with special connectors can be charged. It is, however, UL certified for safety and is by far one of the most high-quality chargers you can buy.

BUY IT ON SWAGTRON!

So, there you have it: ten awesome hoverboard chargers you can use for your board, regardless of manufacturer or connector type. Always remember to keep an eye on your charger when charging up – the last thing you need is a damaged board. With these ten great chargers and adapters, though, the chances of your charge going awry are negligible!

BEST HOVERBOARD FOR KIDS

Every kid loves the hoverboards for kids. During the holiday seasons, one of the best presents that you ca give them is to have them enjoying a ride on these electric scooters. Their interest starts from a every tender age. It could be that they have seen someone riding the hoverboards in a movie or on a picture online. It also could be that they have a friend at school that has these items and so, they also want to enjoy the fun. As a parent, you will find yourself shopping for hoverboards for kids from one of the leading stores. Some of the situations when kids can use Hoverboard include the following;

  • Playing around at the parking during their free time
  • Driving on the sidewalks and around the neighborhood with their friends
  • Engaging in sports and other competitions
  • Learning the basics so that they can become professionals later on*

In this article, we will share with you the best hoverboards for kids on the market today. We will also cover some tips to make riding a hoverboard the safest and most enjoyable experience possible for you kid. Keep reading!

ARE HOVERBOARDS REAL?

The hoverboard that is now talked about is not the same one that you might envision in your mind. Today’s hoverboard with wheels is not the magical floating board that was made famous in “Back to the Future II.”

Instead, the hoverboard or self-balancing scooter as they are sometimes called is a two-wheeled skateboard-like device. It features a pair of wheels each with a motor attached and an axle with two-foot pads to stand upon. The rider stands on the pads, and as they lean forward or back, the engines start accelerating.

HOW MUCH ARE HOVERBOARDS?

The prices for a hoverboard vary wildly so exactly how much hoverboards are will depend on which one you buy and where you buy it.

Though, the price is from $250-1200, though some shops go as high as $1800. A higher price doesn’t mean that it is a better scooter to own, though.

Many of the models of hoverboard that are for sale come from the same maker; they just have different cases.  Find the cheapest hoverboards here.

WHERE CAN YOU BUY A HOVERBOARD?

There are many shops online, Craigslist, and even the local classified ads are full of sellers trying to get your attention. While you might be able to find a great deal on a hoverboard there, you should be sure that the vendor is reputable. Unless you are very familiar with a hoverboard, the chances are that you would not recognize the differences between the brands. You could get scammed into paying more than you should for the one you buy. Or even worse, end up with a defective self-balancing scooter and stuck with no warranty to help get it repaired.

WHAT’S THE BEST PLACE TO BUY A HOVERBOARD?

Hands down, you should buy your hoverboard on Amazon.com. There’s a reason that they are the number one online retailer. While it can be a pain to search sometimes (Though that’s why this site is here, to help pull the good stuff out of Amazon) they still have nearly everything that you could want to buy available there.

Not only do they sell almost every brand of scooter, but you can also see reviews and ask vendors questions. Plus, they allow you to return unused items for 30 days. There’s also the A-to-Z Guarantee to help cover you during the return process.

Good point, you said warranty…

HOW OFTEN DOES A HOVERBOARD BREAK?

Most of the hoverboards you can buy are well-built and can withstand some minor abuse. They have to if they’re going to be driven around by people. Having said that, there is some expensive technology crammed into a little space, so sometimes things break. Here’re some things that might damage your self-balancing scooter:

  • Using your self-balancing scooter in the rain
  • Taking your hoverboard off road
  • Using an electric scooter on rough ground, sand, mud, snow, jungles, grass
  • Overloading a hoverboard.

Those are just a few examples of some of the ways that you can damage your balance scooter.

IS IT HARD FOR KIDS TO LEARN TO RIDE AN ELECTRIC HOVERBOARD?

Learning how to ride a hoverboard is easy. At the top of the page, there’s a link to a guide that explains it in detail. Mostly, you find something sturdy to grab. It needs to be something large and firmly rooted. Don’t hold on to someone and try to ride it.

Grab your sturdy object and then stand on the board. Don’t try and ride it. Just stand there and get your balance. After about 1 min your body will adjust, and you should be able to try to start moving. Just scoot along for the first couple of minutes, moving along your sturdy object. A vehicle works awesome to grab.

By doing those steps above, you’ll be riding in no time. And you won’t fall as you’ve probably seen in the news.

For kids, they’ll figure it out. It’s neat to see just how fast they can pick it up.

ARE HOVERBOARDS SAFE FOR MY KIDS TO USE?

We’ve all seen the news reports or heard the story about hoverboards exploding or catching fire. Yes, there is a possibility that it could happen to your hoverboard. Anybody who tells you differently is wrong. But the chances of it happening are very slim, and even lower if you take some simple precautions. Be sure to see my article about hoverboard safety.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOVERBOARD FROM CATCHING ON FIRE.

The following things are taken from the California Highway Patrol’s hoverboard safety guide. Most of it is the standard “don’t be stupid” advice. Here’re the key points:

  • Don’t charge your hoverboard for extended periods of time. (More than 3-4 hrs) 1. The battery charges less efficiently the longer it is on the charger. 2. Lithium ion batteries can overheat if charging too long, this may make them reach a critical point where they can catch on fire.
  • Don’t allow your hoverboard to charge overnight.
  • If your battery becomes damaged, immediately place the device outside away from flammable materials and call 911.
  • Do the same if it is leaking, dripping, smoking, or talking to you. (just checking to see if you were paying attention)
  • Consider purchasing a replacement charger if yours doesn’t have a UL certified sticker on it.
  • Wear the proper safety gear when riding a powered electric board. That should include a helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, and kneepads. Here’s my advice on hoverboard safety gear.

If you’ve already purchased a hoverboard and feel that it is unsafe, Amazon is allowing you to get a refund for returning one purchased through them. You should have gotten an email from Amazon with the details if you are eligible. If you didn’t get the email, you could try contacting Amazon directly for help.

The other biggest piece of advice that I have seen is to replace the charger that came with your hoverboard with a higher quality, UL-certified charger. These detect when your hoverboard battery is nearing capacity and reduce the charge going to the battery. This keeps it from overheating. Thus it stays safer.

BEST HOVERBOARD FOR KIDS: Our Top Picks

Choosing a hoverboard for kids is easier than you would think. While there are a bunch of choices, it you can break it down into these easy questions:

ONE THING TO NOTE:

All of these smart boards are designed for adults, and most have a suggested age limit of 12 or older.

Please supervise your children using a hoverboard so that they use it safely and responsibly. Also, please use the recommended safety gear of scooter helmet, and knee/elbow pads and wrist guards. The age limits are for two reasons:

    1. Is the person physically able to handle the required movements to drive the self-balancing scooter? Most have a minimum weight limit of 50 lbs. The also have a max weight limit of 300 pounds.
    2. Is the rider mature enough to know what to do in case something happens? It could be as innocent as accidentally bumping into someone, all the way to a full-scale accident. Make sure that you supervise your child.

Are Hoverboards Safe

Over the holiday season, and during summer, hoverboards are some of the most utilized sporting accessories. It is because this is one of the most liked outdoor activities. You will find lots of people enjoying their time on the roads, city pavements, walkways, and every other space they find. However, as you enjoy your time, it is important to understand that safety is something that you cannot take lightly. According to the Consumer Safety Commission, serious injuries can occur due to lack of precautionary measures. If you are planning to hit the road with your hoverboards, you need to understand some of the tricks and hacks that will keep you safe throughout the sessions. Here are some hoverboard safety tips for you.

What exactly is a hoverboard?

The term ‘hoverboard’ was first mentioned in the film ‘Back to the future’ in 1985. It was represented as an artificially levitating transportation board that would float a few feet above the ground. The modern iteration of the hoverboard, however, is a misnomer. The actual device being discussed is actually called the ‘self-balancing scooter’ which uses wheels to “float” itself. A self-balancing scooter consists of a lateral arrangement of two wheels connected by a board, on which the rider stands, and steers or navigates. The acceleration, deceleration and turning are controlled by two pressure sensitive pads underneath the rider’s feet. In this article, the terms hoverboard and self-balancing scooter will be used interchangeably.

Hoverboard dangers

The hoverboard can be broadly described as a self-balancing scooter  which is powered by li-ion battery packs, which pose a potential safety hazard. There have been instances of faulty batteries, which have exploded, caught fire or short circuited. Case of spontaneous combustion during charging have led to extensive damage to homes as well.

The most obvious cause of harm originating from this device is the extremely high danger of falling over or colliding into objects, which is a frequent occurrence for inexperienced or amatuer riders. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 10 mph (16 km/h), so significant damage could be inflicted in case of a fall at high speeds. As is the case with all modes of transportation, traffic accidents are also likely when using the hoverboard, so using proper safety equipment, such as a helmet, knee-pads and gloves is of paramount importance. According to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, hoverboard-related combustions caused more than $2 million in property damages around the US.

WHY DO HOVERBOARDS EXPLODE?

The most common issue with hoverboards seems to lie with the batteries used in hoverboards. The batteries used are the lithium ion batteries, which are often used in cell phones and laptops as well. However, the liquid contained inside these batteries is highly flammable, which poses a threat. Hoverboards that are currently available on the market have been produced in various nameless Chinese factories and, since these factories often do not adhere to any international safety standards pertaining to such devices, these hoverboards can become potentially dangerous.

Another reason why these batteries are causing hoverboards to be dangerous and highly flammable is the fact that these batteries have a tendency to explode if they are bumped around a lot. Any individual, unless extremely skilled at hoverboarding, is likely to bash into walls and other objects. Because driving thee devices takes a significant amount of practice, amateurs often bump these devices around, increasing the risk of such an accident.

Most fires have been reported to occur while these hoverboards are charging. This is specifically because Lithium ion batteries do not accept overcharging, while people may tend to overcharge them. Chargers for hoverboards include a feature of a cut-off mechanism that detects when the battery have been fully charged and then automatically stops the charging, in order to prevent any damage to the batteries or fire. Unfortunately, defects in the cut-off mechanism are leading to batteries getting overcharged and catching fire. These defects usually occur because these products are usually not tested or inspected fully, to adhere to international standard, and thus can cause damages.

HOW TO PREVENT HOVERBOARD FIRES?

If you already have a hoverboard, you must take a few precautionary measures to try to prevent it from catching fire. According to CPSC, it is wise to allow the toy an hour to cool down after use before plugging it in for charging. It takes approximately two hours to charge fully. It is best not to leave the toy unattended while it’s charging. Monitor the charging at least while charging the smart balance wheel for the first time. You should never charge the hoverboard overnight or longer than is stated in the manual. It is best to keep the toy away from flammable objects and to unplug its charger from the board as well as the outlet as soon as it’s fully charged.

If you wish to invest in a good quality charger, it is a good idea to opt for the external universal charger. This will not prevent the hoverboard catching fire due to damage to its battery but it would help to avoid destructive fires, the kind that result from overcharging.

Another important precautionary measure is to minimize the impact of the toy in order to try to reduce the chances of the battery getting damaged. It is best to avoid riding it near hard or rough surfaces such as rocks or walls. It is important to be careful while carrying the hoverboard as dropping it could lead to its battery getting damaged as well. Dropping it or bumping into hard surfaces or sharp objects damage the battery pack’s separator sheets, which in turn causes the fire. Though fires usually result from overcharging and not by colliding into something or dropping your hoverboard but if it’s best to be careful especially if the board’s construction does not seem that solid.

HOVERBOARD SAFETY CERTIFICATION: THE UL2272

For several months, it looked like self-balancing scooters were doomed to be a one-time fad, like so many other products. Places like Amazon were telling people to “throw their hoverboards away.” Retailers removed them from their shelves. Left and right you began to see new articles about the latest place to ban them from being used.

Many assumed that the hoverboard fad was over…

Soon after the CPSC published the safety advisory recommending that people not purchase hoverboards, it released a set of safety standards for hoverboards. UL2272 is the new standard for Self Balancing Scooters Electrical Systems. Some of the things covered by these standards include:

  • The construction:
    • Metallic and non-metallic parts
    • Enclosures
    • Wiring
    • Insulation and Protective circuits
  • Electrical tests
    • Short Circuit test
    • Temperature test
    • Overcharge test
  • Mechanical tests
    • Vibration tests
    • Shock tests
    • Crush tests
    • Overload tests
  • Environmental tests
    • Water exposure tests
    • Thermal cycling tests

This is just a short list of some of the items in the standards, for a complete overview of the testing, see the UL Hoverboard page. Prior to these standards being released, anyone could throw together a piece of plastic for you to stand on, attach a couple of wheels, throw in motor and a battery, and then try to sell it as the greatest hoverboard in the world. And many people did exactly that.

Hoverboard safety tips

BUY AN AUTHENTIC AND SAFE HOVERBOARD

Take the necessary time to determine the hoverboard’s authenticity – It can be extremely hard to determine a genuine hoverboard from a fake one. Fake products often look identical to unsuspecting buyers. (It’s even worse with hoverboards since so many brands are visually identical, but component-wise entirely different models.)

You want to avoid fake hoverboards because lower quality self-balancing scooters usually have batteries that are also lower quality. The primary cause of self-balancing scooter fires were faulty batteries that failed and experienced rapid discharge.

Unless you take the time to open a hoverboards case, you’ll never be positive that you’ve gotten a quality battery. If the vendor doesn’t mention the brand, chances are it’s inferior. Samsung and LG are both considered excellent batteries and have had very few failures.

So how do you get the best hoverboard with a battery that’s safe?

You want to buy your hoverboard from reputable brands and marketplaces. While Fred the Fence may be able to get you a “sweet deal” for a hoverboard, he’s trying to score big bucks off of you.

Some of the most notable safe hoverboard brands are Swagtron, the Powerboard, Razor Hovertrax, StreetSaw, and Jetson to name but a few. If you make your purchase from giant online marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay, make sure that the product is sold directly by its maker and not a 3rd party seller.

FOLLOW THE HOVERBOARD MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTIONS.

It may not seem all that earth shattering of a revelation, but the manufacturer’s instructions are there to help you to use their product safely. For kids, this is especially important because they often lack the experience to know that they could become severely injured in an accident.

One of the critical things to supervise with your children and hoverboards is recharging and storing the hoverboard. It’s during the charge cycle that a majority of the battery malfunctions occur. Make sure to keep the hoverboard away from any flammable materials.

Also when charging your hoverboard, do so immediately after using is and for only a few hours at a time.

DO NOT leave it to charge for more than 4 hours. After a lithium-ion battery is fully charged, there is a slightly higher likelihood of an accident occurring. Always use the charger that you received when you bought your hoverboard. Other chargers may seem identical, but there’s no guarantee, and they might just be different enough to cause an accident.

USE PROPER HOVERBOARD SAFETY GEAR

Use the proper safety gear when riding a hoverboard. Have you seen the videos from last Christmas when hoverboards were the newest craze, and everybody was desperate to own one? Did you also see the hoverboard videos where people fell off of the not-so-self-balancing scooter and required a trip to the Emergency Room? There were hundreds of hoverboard accident videos on YouTube to watch and be glad that it wasn’t happening to you.

If only they had taken the time to learn how to ride a hoverboard

Granted most of the accident victims were products of their unpreparedness blended with beginner hoverboard-riding skills; you can lose your balance in a second. Save a trip to the ER, and use the proper personal protective gear for riding hoverboards. At a minimum, you should have a decent helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads. You may also want to consider wearing wrist guards and booty pads. Older riders should watch out since they are more likely to hurt their wrists trying to stop yourself from falling.

At a minimum, you should have a decent helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads. You may also want to consider wearing wrist guards and booty pads. Older riders should watch out since they are more likely to injure themselves when attempting to stop a fall than children or teenagers. The last thing you want is to break a bone or injure yourself in some other manner.

DON’T ABUSE YOUR HOVERBOARD

Most hoverboards like long walks to watch the sunset, followed by ice cream and a good movie.

Just seeing if you were awake.

Like any piece of equipment, if you take care of it, it will take care of you, and hoverboards are no exception. Hold on a second, actually; hoverboards are an exception. Remember earlier where I mentioned that the batteries were one of the biggest causes of hoverboard fires? There were several cases where superficial damage to the hoverboard’s outer case caused fires. What wasn’t apparent, was that the damage to the case had also damaged the battery.  At some point, the damage caused the chemicals inside the battery to become exposed to oxygen, starting a fire.

Remember earlier where I mentioned that the batteries were one of the biggest causes of hoverboard fires? There were several cases where what appeared to be superficial damage to the hoverboard’s outer case, was actually much more substantial and was believed fo be the cause of several fires. At some point, the battery was damaged, causing chemicals inside the battery to become exposed to oxygen, starting a fire.

In this video, a guy takes a knife and stabs it into the battery. While the battery he is using is a cell phone battery, it’s the same type of battery as the one inside a hoverboard. Only a hoverboard has 18 cells in its battery.  A single battery failing catches the remaining cells on fire. When that happens it almost sounds like firecrackers exploding, only the shooting flames are much more vigorous and have caught multiple homes on fire.

Imagine a fire eighteen times bigger than the one in the video.

NEVER CHARGE A HOVERBOARD OVERNIGHT

We have become accustomed to charging our electronic devices overnight while we sleep.  Why not? It works out awesome that way. We both get recharged.

Don’t do this with your hoverboard.

Generally, most of these products usually require about 2 to 4 hours for their batteries to be fully charged. As it nears a full charge, the battery reduces the amount of energy it absorbs to a trickle. It stays at a nearly full charge until it’s almost full when it suddenly begins absorbing lots of energy again. Reaching the critical threshold, the battery overcharges. It attempts to shed the excess energy it consumed and returned to its full state.

Want to guess how it reduces its energy level?

Did you say rapid discharge?

Make sure your child understands the need to remove the hoverboard from the charger after a few hours. The CPSC also recommends that you recharge your hoverboard immediately after use. Doing so will make it more stable when it’s not in use.

Also, try to be aware of the hoverboard’s surroundings when charging. You don’t want to have it next to anything flammable.

CALIBRATE YOUR HOVERBOARD

Calibrate your hoverboard every two or three uses. Calibration only takes a second, and it will make your hoverboard ride smoother and steadier. It should be the first step anytime your hoverboard is performing poorly.

It can also help stop the hoverboard shaking uncontrollably, or where one side turns, but the other doesn’t, or if the LEDs on your hoverboard blink all the time.

All you need is a level surface and powering it on and off, and you’ll be ready to go again in no time. Just follow this link if you’d like to learn more about calibration.

If your child is under 50 lbs. hoverboards may not work properly for them.  Most hoverboards are designed to work for riders between 50-220lbs. They may not weigh enough to control it properly.

GET ON/OFF THE HOVERBOARD PROPERLY

Get on and off your hoverboard in the proper way. It’s a little counter-intuitive, but you want to step forward onto your hoverboard when mounting it.

Place one foot in the middle of it and then assume as wide a stance as you can on the foot pads. You want your feet to be centered front-to-back with equal amounts of toe and heel hanging off.

When it is time to get off your hoverboards, don’t dismount by stepping forward. You’ll shift your weight and instead of stepping off, you’ll cause your hoverboard to propel itself forward, right underneath where you’re trying to step.

Instead, step off the hoverboard backwards, like you were stepping down from a ladder or stepstool. This will prevent any hoverboard accidents from happening.

CHOOSE WHERE TO RIDE

Choosing where to ride

Everyone knows that there are no designated places where you can use a hoverboard. You can try them at the parking, neighborhoods, or any other place where you can use skateboards and ride a bike. Some cities have laws that regulate where you can go riding. For instance, in New York City, and salt lake city, using these items on busy streets has been banned. However, many people can still be spotted on the sidewalks and even on major streets even with the ban in place.

The main reason why you should be careful when choosing where to ride is because some locations pose a higher risk than others. For instance, if you are sliding through places with heavy motor vehicle traffic, you need to consider the risk of getting hit by a car, or crashing into stationary objects. Just like when riding a self balancing scooter, you could injure yourself by ramming into a tree, a wall, a fence, or any other object. Professionals know how to avoid such objects and therefore, they may be after when enjoying their time at such locations. For learners and amateurs, it is better to choose a location that requires less skills to avoid these dangerous objects.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD, PRACTICE

Before you hit the road, practice

You may be excited to hit the sidewalks and try out your new skateboards. However, studies have shown that it is not a good idea to do that even before you understand the safety standards, and get the right safety gear. If you are new to this sport, the best thing you can do is to start by learning the basics. You can not learn the basics by going straight to the most dangerous locations. Instead of that, find some space at home and learn to balance, move, turn, and every other task that is related to it. As time goes by, you will notice that you have begun mastering the tricks and so, you will be much safer when you get out.

The body parts that do not go well with concrete surfaces when using a hoverboard include the head, elbows, and knees. This is the reason you need to wear the right protective safety gear before you head out. However, in case you are not in a position to wear such gear, you have to stay within your practice sessions until you are accomplished enough to go out. Those skillful and experienced people you see on the streets did not start where they are. They had to grow gradually in the sport and that is the reason they have stayed away from injuries.

WHAT TO DO WHEN RIDING AT NIGHT

What to do when riding at night

Although a hoverboard has lights, they are not as visible as those of a vehicle or motor bike. These lights are low and dim. Sometimes, it might be difficult for someone to notice them unless they are keenly watching. This is the reason you should be more cautious when riding at night. Just because you have switched the lights on, and you can see where you are going does not mean that you are completely safe. Experts often ask people to wear whites if they have to ride on their hoverboards at night.

In addition to that, you should wear a helmet, and light up shoes. The reason you need such shoes is that they have small lithium ion batteries to power them throughout the ride. These batteries are safer than any other option that you are likely to find out there because they similar to the ones found on mobile phones and computers. After charging the battery, it not only lights up the shoe but it also illuminates the sole which keeps flashing and changing colors to attract more attention than those shoes that only use one color.

DESIST FROM CHARGING HOVERBOARDS OVERNIGHT

Desist from charging hoverboards overnight

You may be so eager to use your hoverboards on Saturday and so, you think that charging them throughout on a Friday night is the best way to ensure that you have enough energy. However, experts have pointed out that this is not a good idea. One thing that you need to know is that if they charge under such conditions, it only means that nobody is monitoring the process. Since most of them require just four hours to fully charge, there is likely to be a fire outbreak if you leave them plugged in for long. The National Fire Protection Association has confirmed that many fire accidents have been caused by this.

To avoid fire and explosions, it is important to ensure that the hoverboards only charge during the time when you can adequately monitor them. Some people also prefer to charge these items even before the current charge is exhausted just to ensure that there is enough energy for the next use. It is the same thing that they do with their mobile phones and computers.

Which Hoverboards are safe?

Apart from taking all these safety precautions, you should also ensure that you buy the right hoverboards.

When looking to purchase a hoverboard, it is ideal that you purchase it from a retail shop you know and fully trust. The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised against purchasing hoverboards from unknown websites, online stores or mall Kiosks as none of these seem to know much about the product itself and mere retailers of the product. When buying the hoverboard, think if you’ll be able to get in contact with the seller if a problem was to occur with the board. If you believe that the seller won’t be available or difficult to get in touch with, it is better not to buy from them. In cases where you feel the retailer seems a bit sketchy, it’s better to trust your gut and move on to a different retailer.

While purchasing this device, be sure to check for the certification labels present on the packaging. If ETL or UL is emblem on the package, product or on the user’s manual, it is an indication of the fact that the product has been inspected thoroughly by an independent 3rd party or laboratory and has passed the safety test. However, there are a few sketchy manufacturers who try to get a fake emblem. These fakes sometimes produce emblems that do not actually exist, or may be representation of an internal, self-monitored inspection which is usually biased. This is rare as UL is currently working closely with interpol, US Customs and others in order to try to try to catch these fakes before they reach the consumers.

It is essential for the consumers to keep in mind that the appearance of the certification label or an emblem does not mean that the product completely rules out counterfeits, and is perfectly safe with zero risk of malfunction, but the absence of these certification labels indicates that the manufacturer is not concerned with the safety of the consumer.

Target and Amazon have started selling hoverboards that have the certification for the charger and the batteries but this does not mean that the entire hoverboard is also under certification. In fact, up till now there has not been a single entire product that has been certified by UI. It was also revealed that certain factories say they make use of Samsung batteries but these batteries actually are fake.

No hoverboard is completely safe. Like every electronic device, these come with a risk as well. However, the risk of owning and operating these hoverboards is much higher than other electronic devices. People need to take into these risks before making their decision of purchasing a hoverboard.

Conclusion

No technology is free from risk and same is the case with Hoverboards. However, we see a dramatic difference in the Hoverboards that were first introduced in 2015 and the ones that are being introduced this year. If you were to look back over this article, it seems like hoverboard accidents and injuries are just waiting to happen. That’s not the case at all. Follow the steps I mentioned above, and both you and your child will be able to enjoy hoverboards accident-free for a long time.
