Buying an electric longboard is not the same as buying a regular board. While many of the considerations are the same: brand, wheels, trucks, and deck now you have to consider things like engine, battery, brakes, and remote. For someone new to electric skateboards there can be a considerable learning curve. Deck

Decks for electric longboards come in many shapes and sizes. In general, there are three main things to consider when looking for a deck for your electric longboard: shape, flexibility, and wheelbase.

Shape

There are many different options when it comes to the shape of your electric longboard. The first option is to have a directional board or a symmetrical one. A directional board is one that has an obvious front and back and a symmetrical board is the same shape all around. Of course, no matter what shape you choose your board will still have an established ‘front’ and ‘back’.

The difference between these shapes is that directional boards are ideal for downhill boarding, carving, and cruising.  Symmetrical boards are more often used in freestyle riding.

One of the biggest considerations when picking out your deck is the shape or concave of the board. This shape is important to most riders because it is important to keep the rider put on the board.

Flat: while a flat board may give more room on the board for your feet, it is not a good idea for e-riding. You need some shape to your board to give your feet an idea of where they need to stay on your board.

Radial: A radial shape has a distinct U-shape curve. The depth of this curve will vary between decks, but it is the most common of all deck shapes. This concave shape is popular amongst skaters because it gives the rider a better grip on the board.

Progressive/Flat cave/Tub: There are two adaptations of the radial shape called progressive and flat cave/tub. These are just variations of a radial shape. The progressive shape has a flatter and deeper curve with a rounded curved edge and the cave shape is also flatter but with an angled edge.

The W Concave: This is another popular shape with skaters. Just like its name, the W-concave is a W shape double concave that keeps the rider’s feet on the board. Skaters like this shape because it gives a lot of grip. The only downside is that this shaped deck is often only found on the more expensive models of boards.

Wheelbase

The wheelbase is the measurement between your board’s inner mounting holes and measures the distance between where your front and rear sets of wheels are mounted. Typically this measurement is between 13’’ and 15’’ on an electric longboard.

These numbers are important as they will affect the stability and turning radius of your board. A wider wheelbase will increase the stability of your board, but it will also cause a larger turning radius. If you can get comfortable with a narrower wheelbase it will make turning easier on your board.

Flexibility

The thin layers of wood and other materials used to make an electric longboard deck and called ply. The more layers of ply (and the materials used) will determine the flexibility of the deck. Generally, the fewer layers used in the deck, the more flexibility it has. Flexibility in a deck helps absorb vibration when traveling over uneven surfaces. It is also ideal for carving. A stiff deck offers more stability when traveling at higher speeds. However, it does not absorb vibration and therefore the rider will have a less comfortable ride when riding on uneven asphalt.

Brand

The brand is an important consideration when purchasing an electric longboard because a well-established brand with good aftercare will provide far fewer headaches than a generic online brand. Also, a warranty isn’t worth the paper it is printed on if the company won’t be in business next year.

Wheels

Wheels are one of the most important features to consider. After all, wheels are what connect you to the ground when you are on your electric longboard. Cheap wheels can chip, flake, or disintegrate which can be dangerous and even cause you to fly off your board.

There are two main types of wheels: generic wheels and clone wheels. Generic wheels are branded wheels that will give you more speed, mileage, and lifespan. Generic wheels are of poor quality and should be avoided if at all possible.

Motor

As the motors are inside the wheels, they are less exposed to the elements. Often sand and other debris can get caught in the belt of a belt-driven motor and cause it to seize up. This is not a concern with hub motors. Also, the maintenance is often more straight forward since they can simply be swapped out.

However, as hub motors are located within the tire it does limit the amount of polyurethane that can be added to the tire and often results in a less comfortable ride. Also, hub motors also mean that you cannot swap out your tires on your electric longboard.

Belt Drive Motors

Belt-driven motors exist outside of the wheels, therefore they offer the rider more choice when it comes to the size, color, and durometer. Their ability to offer a thicker layer of urethane makes them more comfortable with a better grip.

These motors also offer the rider the option to customize things like torque, range, and top speed by changing the ratio of either your supplied pulleys or adding customized pulleys.

However, the fact that the motor is more exposed leaves it vulnerable to debris which can cause the motor to seize. Also, the operation of a belt-driven motor is usually noticeably louder so it is harder to ride under the radar in areas where electric longboards are not permitted.

Battery

Your longboard’s battery is an important consideration. Choosing an electric longboard with a quality battery will help you get the most speed and mileage out of your board. The difference in battery quality between a generic brand and a name brand is similar to the difference between batteries from the dollar store and name-brand batteries.

Look for a board that discloses the name and statistics for the battery.

In addition to the quality of the battery, you also want to consider the range. The range represents the maximum distance your board can travel under ideal conditions. While the Epikgo Classic is certainly not the newest offering from Epkigo, it holds a certain appeal for riders who really want to use their hoverboards as a means of personal transportation, especially commuters. With its attractive design and all terrain abilities the Epikgo Classic is one self-balancing scooter we had to include on our list. 

Features

The second honorable mention on this list is the Gotrax SRX Pro. While the SRX Pro is not able to boast nearly the speed or staying power of the other options on our list, it has some family friendly options that certainly warranted an honorable mention. 

The SRX Pro features self-balancing technology with a built-in gyroscope that self levels the hoverboard whether the rider is on the hoverboard or not. This technology makes it both easy to ride for a beginner as well as easy to get on and off. 

The SRX Pro also has less power and and less speed making it a safer option for younger riders. With a maximum speed of 7.4 MPH it may be an option that parents feel safer letting their children learn on. 

So while our honorable mentions may not be ‘the best all-terrain hoverboards of 2020” they still may be the right all-terrain hoverboards for many of our readers. 

Epikgo Classic Self Balancing Scooter

Epikgo has branded themselves the indestructible self-balancing scooter. While this claim has yet to be proven, they do boast a sleek high-end design that nods to their California roots. 

While some hoverboards may be designed with teens or younger children in mind, the Epikgo series seems to be made with environmentally conscious adults in mind. Epikgo often designs its self-balancing scooters in shades that mimic those seen on cars on the road rather than bikes on the street. For example, the classic series features shades like space gray, elite silver and rose gold. 

While the Epikgo outside design is attractive, it isn’t just a pretty package. This self-balancing scooter was truly designed for many different terrains. 

Features

It’s 8.5 inch all-terrain solid rubber wheels are designed to easily go from dirt to grass to pavement easily. It features indestructible aluminum wheel covers and an ABS body chassis.  It is also 30 % larger than the average hoverboard to give users a stable and more comfortable ride. However, it has been noted in many user reviews that this wider body can make the Epikgo harder to maneuver. 

In addition to its stability, the Epikgo Classic was also designed for safety.  The Epikgo Classic is rated IP56 for solidness and water resistance and all EpikGo models are UL2272 Certified. 

While the Epikgo Classic has a lot of benefits for all-terrain use, it is limited when it comes to the newest bells and whistles that are featured on many of our newer models listed here. For example, while it is not always wanted or needed, the Epikgo Classic does not feature a bluetooth speaker, or different riding modes. While it says it is able to be used by people with a minimum weight of 44 lbs and a maximum weight of 240 lbs it does not feature different riding modes so it may not be user friendly enough, especially since Epikgo is known for its quick acceleration speeds.

Why does my Jetson hoverboard keep beeping? 

Normally, your Jetson hoverboard will only beep to indicate a few messages to its user. Your Jetson hoverboard will beep to let you know you have reached your maximum speed. This beep is letting you know to slow down for your own safety. You can adjust your maximum speed on the Jeson smartphone app. 

Your Jetson hoverboard will also beep to let you know your battery is low or your sensor is unstable. To stop the beeping, you will need to charge your battery or recalibrate your hoverboard. 

How Do I Recalibrate my Jetson hoverboard? 

To recalibrate your Jetson hoverboard simply place your hoverboard on a flat surface where both sides are level. Next hold and press the power button for about three seconds. You will notice the lights begin to flash. You can use this method to recalibrate your Jetson hoverboard three times consecutively. What Does it mean when my Jetson Hoverboard won’t turn on? 

If your hoverboard will not turn on it is usually one of three reasons: an issue with the battery, an issue with the charger or an issue with the motherboard. Of course, the simplest explanation is that your hoverboard needs to be charged. However, if your hoverboard has been charging and you are still unable to turn the hoverboard on, it wards further investigation. 

Take a closer look at the charger. Does the unit light up like it is about to charge and then turn off? The issue could be with your charger. If you suspect the battery may be the issue you are able to check if the battery is charged by using a voltmeter. A fully charged battery will have between 36 and 42 volts.

If you already own a hoverboard it is important to know that not all hoverboards are compatible with all conversion kits. This is especially true if your model of hoverboard has a carrying handle built into the middle of your board. This feature is handy for sure, but can also make it extremely difficult to find a conversion kit. 

Economy, Durability and Safety 

There is also often a choice between safety, durability and price. Just like hoverboards there are some noticeable differences when it comes to a quality board from a well-respected brand and an economy board from a discount seller. Many families seek out these hoverboard seats to turn their hoverboards into ‘hoverkarts’ because they are a safer riding option. It seems this model has taken some of the weaker points of the Hiboy HC-02 and improved on them. The hoverboard is mounted on the back and steering is performed through two handlebars located on each side of the rider. 

The Hiboy HC-02 kart attachment is able to work with many different types of hoverboards as it can be added to any 6.5”, 8” or 10” hoverboard. Like many other hoverboard seats, this kit will not work with hoverboards that have a handle built in to the middle of the board. 

The Hiboy HC-02 is made of cast iron and comes almost completely assembled. Installation takes less than 15 minutes. Despite its durable frame, this is also a lightweight option at just about 18 lbs and can be used by riders up to 270 lbs. 

The bigger frame and rear suspension makes this a comfortable ride. The large seat and adjustable leg length from 27.5 to 35.3 means that this hoverboard seat can be adjusted to almost any rider.  

The Bad:

The front seat may sit too high for some users. 

Many reviewers state that the front wheel will shake when in use. Some reviewers also said there were missing parts or poor manufacturing. However, Hiboy is known for excellent customer service and many complaints were promptly resolved.

Like many hoverboard seats the Pilan Cool Mini Kart mounts the hoverboard at the rear and features two handle bars for steering as well as a foot rest for comfort. The seat is made of plastic and this mini kart attachment kit is fairly economical. 

This mini kart hoverboard accessory can fit many different models of hoverboard ranging from 6.5″ to 10″ (16.5 cm to 25.4 cm). It does not specify if it will fit hoverboards that feature the built-in handle in the middle of the board.

Many of the kits on this list make hoverboards easier to ride for children or beginners, the HoverSeat Deluxe attachment offers even more stability. It turns your hoverboard from a fun ride on the street to a small personal transportation vehicle. 

This conversion kit features an aluminum frame with two unique features. It has two large rear tires and a traditional bicycle -style handlebar. This is because unlike many other models featured on this list, the hoverboard is not mounted at the rear of the frame, and is instead mounted at the front. 

With this kit you are in a much more elevated position, almost like sitting in a chair on top of your hoverboard. You can choose to steer with either your feet or the familiar handlebar set up. 

The bad: 

The plastic seat does not seem comfortable for long treks. However, it appears you are able to swap out the seat for a different one if you wish. 

The weight capacity is limited to 220 lbs. So while this seems like a possibly cheaper transportation for older adults it does not serve larger adults. 

This conversion kit also has a limited compatibility. In order for this attachment to work, it requires a hoverboard that has a 9″ (22.86 cm) round middle section. Anything too small or too large will not fit in the metal clamp.

Users report this kit makes their hoverboard much easier to use, especially for children. The included plastic bucket seat has raised sides to help keep the rider in place. The hoverboard is mounted in the back with two padded handlebars to control speed. The Hoovykart weight limit is 270 lbs and the kart adjustable to fit most adults. 

The Bad

While the seat design may be good for keeping smaller riders in place, it limits the size of riders who can ride comfortably. This kit may be best for older kids and smaller teens only.

The Good

While this kit is amazing, it is only compatible with the Segway NineBot S. This hoverboard does not follow the traditional design as it has a knee balance support board and speciality construction.

The Good: This conversion kit is the most similar to an actual go kart. It has a real steering wheel and full car body rather than a simple frame. The Segway app has lots of built in features including three speed levels, so it can adjust to different driving abilities. It also has a handbrake (and brake pedal)  to allow the rider to actually ‘drift’ which is a fun feature for kids and adults alike. 

This kit adjustable for riders up to 6” 5 inches tall. 

The Bad:

This conversion kit is expensive. At about $800, it certainly is much more expensive than other models on our list. However, instead of a compatible frame and seat, this conversion kit is much more of a complete car. 

This conversion kit also can handle a maximum weight limit of 220 lbs. So bigger kids can’t enjoy this ride. Unlike many of the other conversion kits, this go-kart drift kit is not easily portable and is large to store. 

Many reviewers mentioned the kit was difficult and complicated to assemble and required firmware updates before the Segway and the go-kart were compatible.

Their 2015 product the Swagway X1 was one of the top selling self balancing scooters in 2015, and in 2016 they’ve released two new products that have raised the bar even higher – the SwagTron T1 and the SwagTron T3.

Is There a Hoverboard Better Then Swagtron T3?

In 2017 new hoverboards have come to the market which makes the Swagtron T3 outdated. The TOP product in 2017 is the ScooterEra EXTREME. This bluetooth, offroad, robust and feature rich hoverboard puts all other hoverboards on the market in their dust.

I’ve already reviewed the popular SwagTron T1, so this article is my review of its ‘big brother’ the SwagTron T3. This exciting new hoverboard has given us a lot to look forward to and as one of the safest on the market (as well as some added extras) may well be equally popular. Let’s start by taking a look at the top features and specifications of this product:

Features and specifications

  • Smart Battery Management System – The SwagTron T3 has been fitted with a smart battery management system commonly referred to as Smart BMS. This is able to monitor voltage closely so that you are kept within the right voltage and detects overcharging of the lithium ion battery. It protects the battery from over current and short circuiting which greatly increases the safety of the product.Still on battery safety, this self balancing scooter has been fitted with cutting edge technology referred to as SentryShield. This is a system that constitutes of an air-tight aluminum chamber that contains the lithium ion battery. It serves two major roles and first one being that it protects the battery from fire. Secondly, it shields the battery from any damage. This system has passed the highest quality certification, namely the original UL 10-ton battery crush test. Keep in mind that this product broke the record as the worlds first self balancing scooter to pass this critical test to get full UL approval.
  • Features that ensure an easier ride – The SwagTron T3 promises and delivers an easier, safer ride to users. To begin with, it comes with a dual independent motor that is upgraded. Gear stabilization in the control is also evident. These features are responsible for the sturdier, more stable feel and a smoother ride in general.
  • Incombustible outer shelling – It has a shell made from proprietary polycarbonate. This material ensures that any fire threat is contained within, ensuring safety of the user. In addition, the product is strong and durable despite being very light.

This app is unique to the T3 as few other hoverboards on the market (including the SwagTron T1) come with this addition.
  • BlueTooth quad speakers – These speakers ensure that you listen to your favorite music as you ride along. All you have to do is pair it with your mobile device.
  • LED lights – This hoverboard comes with color-coded LED lights that are highly stylish and even customizable. Their purpose is to highlight, illuminate or indicate movement.
  • Built in Carry Strap – Users do not have to worry about moving this product from place to place because it comes with a built-in carry strap (on the bottom of the product) ensuring convenience and hassle-free carrying.

Other specifications include a variety of colors among them black, white, blue pink and gold. The maximum weight capacity of this product is 220 pounds. The maximum speed is 8 miles per hour and it comes with a lithium-ion battery. The product comes with a charger as well. The dimensions are a height of 4 inches, width of 23 inches and a depth of 7 inches. The weight of the product is 22 pounds, which is much lighter and easier to carry than previous models.

Three Riding Modes – Learner, Standard & Pro

The SwagTron T3 hoverboard is one of the simplest self balancing boards to use. If you are a newbie to hoverboarding, then you can start with the learner mode which is slower and more stable – this is also perfect for kids. In the learner mode, the foot pad sensitivity is lower making it ideal for first-timers.

If you have bit of experience then the second ‘standard’ mode is for you. This mode sees the speed, stabilization and sensitivity on the regular setting.

And for those who are experts in hoverboard riding, the pro mode eliminates all the speed limits for the fastest ride possible. However, for safety reasons, this mode is only available through the SwagTron smartphone App.

You can easily switch between modes at the press of a button.

Is this hoverboard safe?

The T3 is one of the safest hoverboards on the market today. To start with, it is UL 2272 certified. There are very few products that have currently got this standard certification which is new for 2016. In fact Swagtron was the first brand in the world to get certified!  UL stands for Underwriter Laboratories who are an authority on safety standards. All the test requirements by UL were passed including overcharge, short circuit, vibration, shock, crash, drop and mold tests – the list of tests goes on and on. To check if your hoverboard is UL certified look for the UL holographic sticker  on the bottom of your product.

The product also meets the environmental standards requirements and has certifications like the UN38.3, CE, FCC, Prop 65 and RohS. This is also a zero emissions product so safe for the environment!

Which Model – SwagTron T1 or T3?

There are many differences between the SwagTron T3 and T1:

  • To begin with, the SwagTron T3 comes in a more modern and futuristic design making it more stylish overall.
  • The T1 version only comes in 2 modes unlike the T3 which enjoys three modes –  learner, standard and pro.
  • The SwagTron T3 is enhanced with a 5 level charge indicator, something that the T1 doesn’t have. This shows you where your battery power is at.
  • The smartphone app is also only available for the T3 mode and not the T1.
  • In addition, the SwagTron T3 come with the added extra of high quality BlueTooth speakers. 
  • The T3 also comes with a built in carrying strap which makes for easier transportation.
  • Lastly of course there’s a difference in price – the T3 costs $100 more than the T1.

Pros

There are many pros when it comes to the SwagTron T3 – here are just a few:

  • Stylish look with a durable shell which makes the product hard to scratch and long lasting.
  • The impressive smartphone app is a revolutionary new addition to hoverboarding
  • The riding modes offer different speed limits giving every person a choice of what suits them. The learning mode is particularly useful for younger users or the older generation until they find their balance.
  • UL 2272 certification means that your product is safe and you won’t have to worry about hoverboard fires.
  • The Bluetooth speakers are an excellent way to enjoy your music as your ride.

Cons

It’s pretty hard to find anything negative to say about this product but a few things are worth mentioning. This product is slightly expensive compared to other hoverboards on the market. However, considering the new features and safety measures, the price hike does make sense – UL testing doesn’t come cheap and this particular model does come with extras that NO other hoverboard currently has.

Anther potential downside is the ability for newbies to access the pro riding mode which can lead to accidents and injuries. In this regard, the company has put out a disclaimer meaning that every user will have to take responsibility for their actions. Just follow the instructions in the manual though and  you shouldn’t have any problems.

Although more expensive than the $300 generic brand Chinese hoverboards that were for sale previously (many of which went on fire or had battery explosions), this brand offers good value for money. Warranty information

The SwagTron T3 comes with a standard 1 year warranty. This warranty will cover any flaws that result from workmanship and any defects in the materials used. If you use it wrongly and cause damage then you might see your warranty become null and void so make sure to read the user manual. For example, this hoverboard should not be used to jump off sidewalks. The warranty is relevant from the date of purchase.

My final verdict on the SwagTron T3

The SwagTron T3 has definitely been enhanced to provide better safety and quality than similar products  that went before. This hoverboard brand is still one of only a handful that has full UL 2272 certfication, and that alone is a big selling point.

This is a dynamic product that gives users options for colour, multiple riding modes for different experience levels, an app, and even bluetooth. If you don’t need all those bells and whistles and are looking for something a bit more standard (and $100 cheaper) then you may prefer the Swagtron T1, particularly if you’re buying for a child.

Swagway have definitely gone the extra mile to deliver a winning product and user reviews confirm this.

All in all, this board gives you superb value for your money and is worth checking out. The brand is a reputable one and they’ve made safety and functionality priority with this great self balancing scooter.

A cheaper rebrand of the more upmarket priced IO Hawk and Phunkeeduck, the Monorover R2 is currently one of the most popular of the branded products, mainly due to the fact that it’s more affordable. This is a great little scooter and is tough and durable enough to be used on a daily basis.

The Monorover has some excellent reviews and buyers are very happy with both the price and reliability of this 2 wheel scooter. Not only that but its one of the few products that comes with a decent warranty (as long as you buy from an authorised seller).

Two wheel self balancing scooters are probably one of the most popular gadgets in 2015, and they are only increasing in popularity as more and more they are being featured in the media. They are set to be a top seller for Christmas 2015 so if you haven’t got one yet, now’s the time to get saving! Our Monorover review is a just a quick overview of this product and what you get.

How Does It Work?

Just like a segway without the handle! Stand on the two footplates and tilt your weight forwards or backwards depending on which direction you want to go. You can even turn left or right by tilting one footplate forward and the other back (it does take a bit of practice) and can be used in small spaces, like indoors.

This does take a bit of practice and although some people boast of having mastered it in 2 minutes because they’ve got super balance, most people say it takes 30 minutes to a few hours to REALLY get the hang of it and be confident travelling over all terrains.

Because this is a self balancing scooter it is ‘auto’ balancing so it’s a stable ride and is safe and easy to control. Once you’ve got your balance and learn how to control it properly you’ll probably be as addicted to it as I am to mine!

Cons

  • Like all the other 2 wheel scooters the main con is not being able to mount a kerb. You can ride over uneven ground, cracks in the pavement etc. but when you reach a kerb you’ve got to stop and lift your scooter.
  • Scooters are easily scratched if you don’t look after them.
  • Can’t use in inclement weather. Splashes of water are okay, but they’re not completely waterproof so if it’s raining, keep your scooter at home.

Final Thoughts

The Monorover R2 ticks all the boxes. It’s affordable (compared to similar models that cost $1000 more), it’s reliable, and comes with a good warranty. This is the model I have myself, and I’ve never had a single problem with it. In fact it’s a model I would recommend without hesitation.

Okay it’s not as cheap as the unbranded products, but Monorover’s warranty makes this a safer investment. For me the IO Hawk and Phunkeeduck just aren’t worth the extra money as they’re almost exactly the same product. The price and specs are pretty similar to many others on the market and for the most part this seems to be a pretty good product with a 6 month warranty. It’s not the most popular scooter available but it’s still good value for money and even has a few extra features that some other models on the market don’t have. This Locas W1 scooter review will tell you everything you need to know about this product.

There are very few Locas W1 two wheel self balancing electric scooter user reviews for this product yet so it’s hard to judge whether or not this is a good buy. The truth is that it’s far from the best rated. There are a few positive reviews though, and those that rated it highly are very happy with their scooter. There are a few negative 1 star reviews – some people find that the board broke easily and there’s a review stating that it stopped charging after just 2 days.

Verdict

The Locas W1 has mixed reviews but for the most part seems to be quite a good scooter with some useful features like ‘battery status display’ that not every other model has. There are a few reviewers saying theirs broke, but that can happen with any scooter (some are more easily broken than others though). There is a 6 month warranty on the motor and battery, and 12 month warranty on the board which means you can at least get a replacement if something goes wrong – you may have to jump through a few hoops first though (one reviewer stated she had to unscrew the back and take a picture of the motherboard so that they could decide whether or not to replace it). It comes with a free carry bag and free noise-canceling headphones as a nice added bonus.
