I guess that means no cruising the 101 on it. Also, you need to be wearing a helmet. That’s the required safety gear. I’d also recommend that you consider getting wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads to go with your helmet.

SHOULD I BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR MY HOVERBOARD?
I’m the type of person who will often laugh at the sales person who tries to push some over-priced service plan on to me when I make a purchase. HOWEVER, hoverboards have already had a sketchy history: major retailers pulling them from shelves, airlines banning them, random fires while they’re charging.

How much? Try 2 years. 2 years beyond what the manufacturer covers. That’s a really good deal. Especially if hoverboards keep blowing up.
WHAT YOU NEED TO REPAIR YOUR SELF BALANCING SCOOTER
Here’s a replacement battery for your self balancing scooter. How will you know that you need to replace your battery?
The battery in your hoverboard is just like the battery that you find in your cell phone. Since it is a lithium ion battery, you shouldn’t need to break the battery in, though I would fully charge it before using it for the first time.
What that entails is fully charging it, and then draining it most of the way and recharging it fully again. If you do that, it will help prolong the life of your battery. Other things to do:
Charge your battery often
Don’t drain your battery empty, this damages lithium-ion batteries.
Avoid letting the battery overheat
Try to keep the battery from being damaged
The random fires and exploding hoverboards were most likely caused by the batteries overheating or being damaged. They really don’t like that.

Here’s a replacement circuit board for a self balancing scooter. It’s actually the parts that make it balance by itself. It looks pretty simple to use.
Mount the sensors on the front, back, and sides of the axle and then the motherboard in the center.
Connect the battery and the motor to the motherboard.
Next, close the chassis back up and you’ll be as good as new. This kit gives you the brains of a hoverboard.

(That, and the fact that all the companies copied and “borrowed” designs from each other) The steps to replace your hoverboard shell are unscrew all the screws (18 of them). Gently remove the outer casing. Watch out; there are wires connected to the piece of shell that you are removing. Once you have the insides exposed, unscrew the screws along the outside edge INSIDE the hoverboard. These are the screws that are holding the top of the hoverboard shell to your frame.

This is a brand new item that I just found online. It makes sense when you think about it. You can now find a silicone protective case for your hoverboard. If you’ve ever gotten a case for your phone, this is the same concept, only scaled up to fit a hoverboard. The case is stretched over the outside of the hoverboard, and small tabs clasp onto the screw holes on the bottom of the hoverboard. One of the neat things about the way that these are designed is that you get two cases. One for the left, and one for the right. Mix and match to find the perfect style for you.
There is a drawback to this case, though. It does only protect the top of the hoverboard. The bottom will still be scratched during use.

Replacement chargers. I could write a whole post on them, but these are the things to look for.
Look for the CE or UL logos on them. This means that it has passed certification tests that it should operate as expected. THIS IS IMPORTANT! With hoverboards having the problem of randomly catching on fire, you want to limit over-stressing the battery. A UL-certified charger for a hoverboard will do exactly that.
Don’t buy a cheap one. The more expensive versions have better insulation and components, again so that it charges things more safely.

SELF BALANCING SCOOTER ACCESSORIES: A HOVERBOARD CARRYING CASE
A carrying case for your hoverboard is that nice bit of extra care that will extend the life of your scooter immensely. Yes, it protects it from the elements. And yes, it hides it a bit so would-be thieves might not realize that you have something worth taking.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HOVERBOARD BAG?
Many of the bags and hoverboard carrying cases that you see on places like Amazon and EBay look exactly the same. There’s a few key points that you have to remember while you are shopping for a good carrying case.
Make sure that the bag can fit your hoverboard. Pay attention to these two critical measurements: wheel size and board length. The standard wheel sizes: 6.5″, 8″, and 10″. The board length is the how wide your hoverboard is. You can usually find the information online, or just use a tape measure.
Look for extra pockets on your bag, this way you can keep your charger and any other hoverboard accessories you might have.
The big difference between the $10 hoverboard carrying cases and the $50 cases? The $50 carrying case is fire resistant. In case of a fire the fire-resistant bag would help to contain any flames.

These first bags look like they would be perfect for carrying your hoverboard. And they are, except one huge design flaw. I’m jumping ahead of myself. Let’s think of the different reasons that you would be using a bag for your hoverboard instead of riding it.

Any of these situations could happen at any time you’re riding. If it does, you’re stuck having to carry a 25 lb. lead weight with you. Hopefully it’s not very far. That leads me to the epic design flaw in most hoverboard carrying cases:
Make sure your hoverboard bag comes with some type of shoulder strap!
Don’t buy a hoverboard carrying case without these!
The second style of hoverboard bags have attachment points on either end of the bag so that you can attach a shoulder strap to the bag. This makes it much easier to carry for a long distance.
The third type of hoverboard bag has backpack style straps. These let you carry it on one or both shoulder like a regular backpack. You’ll be grateful that you spent the $10 extra the first time you have to carry your hoverboard any type of distance.

This next bag is probably the best carrying case that you can get for your hoverboard. While it doesn’t have two straps to wear like a backpack, it does have wheels on the bottom. A handy strap allows you to drag the hoverboard behind you. As my girlfriend said, it’s for when your wheels need wheels. This bag is the perfect choice of a bag for people that would have difficulty carrying a 25 lb. object.
Sometimes you can’t take your smart balance wheel everywhere you want. Now, there’s a solution, with this hoverboard lock that is available on Amazon. It works the same as a bike lock would. Find an immovable object that you can chain your hoverboard to, and lock it down. Go do what you need to, and when you return, your hoverboard will still be there. Pretty cool.
