Can You Really Buy A Swegway For $200?

So you want to buy a $200 hoverboard? Unfortunately, it’s not that easy to find one (in the US anyway).Sure they were available, and up to the end of June 2016 you COULD get a swegway or self balancing scooter or whatever you want to call them, at Aliexpress or Alibaba (the Chinese marketplaces) for as little as $200 or less and they shipped worldwide.

In July 2016, at the request of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Alibaba Group are now requiring safety certification from testing agencies from all 3rd party sellers of hoverboards. For now, if you’re in the US you can’t purchase as they don’t ship non UL certified products to the US.

You CAN still purchase a hoverboard there if you’re outside the US, but a cheap hoverboard without a UL approved battery pack is a potential fire risk.

HOVERBOARD FIRES CAUSED BY UNTESTED LITHIUM ION BATTERY PACKS

I’m sure you’ll remember that just a few short months ago every time you went online and searched for scooters you would find more and more sellers offering cheap generic two wheel scooters. Nearly every electronics factory in China jumped on the bandwagon in late 2015 trying to create cheaper versions and to grab their corner of the market.

However, not all were the best quality and in a few isolated cases, scooters with cheap unregulated lithium ion battery packs sparked, smoked or even went on fire or exploded.Unfortunately hoverboard manufacturers weren’t adhering to the usual electronics safety certification that we have come to expect.

Considering there were approximately only 100 incidents of property damage and burn injuries reported out of possibly close to 1 million sold, the hoverboard fires seem to have been few and far between. However, it made it clear that most of those sold between approximately June 2015 and May 2016 are potentially dangerous. In fact before the new UL 2272 hoverboard certification was developed NO hoverboard could be deemed safe. Consumers who bought one during that time have been advised by the CPSC to stop using them for their own safety, and dispose of their self balancing scooter according to local and state regulations.

HOVERBOARD RECALLS

In July 2016 over half a million hoverboards sold by 10 different companies, in co operation with the US CPSC, agreed to voluntarily recall their products due to them being a potential fire hazard. Major players in the hoverboard industry including Swagway, Razor, Hoverboard LLC and more are involved in this recall. You can see a full list here.

If you bought a hoverboard between June 2015 and May 2016 you may be able to get a refund, a fix or a replacement from the company you bought from.

BUYING SAFE HOVERBOARDS IN 2016

Most major retailers like Amazon, eBay and others now require sellers or manufacturers to produce certification before their product will be allowed for sale on their marketplaces. Currently there are only a few hoverboards that have the new UL 2272 hoverboard safety certification and those are the Swagtron T1, Swagtron T3, Powerboard by Hoverboard, and Ninebot by Segway MiniPRO.

These products have gone undergone rigorous testing by UL (Underwriter Laboratories) and are proven to be safe. Some of these are now available to purchase on sites like Amazon, eBay, Best Buy etc.

These new UL 2272 certified hoverboards start at about $400 so realistically that’s the cheapest price at which you’ll be able to find a safe hoverboard for sale. That’s  still not overly expensive for a legitimate, safe electrical product like this, but obviously not what you’re looking for if you’ve got a budget of just $200.

If you want to buy a hoverboard in 2016 stay away from cheap hoverboards (if you actually see any for sale – hopefully most have now been withdrawn). Look out for UL 2272 hoverboard certification on any product you’re considering purchasing so that you can be sure your scooter will be safe.

Best Hoverboard Games

Hoverboards are in. They are the newest, coolest link between old school skateboarding and new age technology, and anyone who owns one couldn’t be more excited to have free time on their hands.

Just five minutes with a hoverboard can turn your boredom into pure bliss. It’s exciting! It’s fun! And it’s easy!

But there are only so many times you can “hover” around the block. There are only so many times you can get up on that hands-free board and make figure eights around the driveway. There are only so many times you can glide down the hallway on those two perfectly balanced wheels. Before long, boredom sets in. Am I right?

You want something a little more exciting to break up to monotony. But hoverboarding is a relatively new activity, so there isn’t much out there for users to go by. What new activities should you try? What are the best hoverboard games you should try to make things interesting again?

We’ve got you covered. Take a look below to find out what all the kids are doing with their hoverboards. But don’t worry, we aren’t leaving the adults out. Lots of fun can be had by kids and adults alike. Just channel your inner child to get the most out of these games!

MAKING SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO RIDE THE HOVERBOARD

Before you get too far into these five games, you should really make sure that you can stand your own on a hoverboard first, so you have a good chance at winning. The first time you get on your hoverboard, you should steady yourself against a solid surface so that you can keep your balance.

Next, make sure there are no obstacles that can get in your way and cause you to trip up and fall. Slowly get both feet on the hoverboard and take a few seconds to get the feel of balancing on top of it. This gives your body a bit of time to adjust. Then, once you are brave enough, you can start riding your hoverboard!

Remember, adjustment time is important; don’t think that once you get the hang of standing on it that you can go ahead and attempt a bunch of hoverboard stunts. Ummm. No. Be safe. Imagine a hands-free Segway, and we all know how hard those are to control.

HOVERBOARD TAG/HIDE AND SEEK

This takes an old favorite and cranks it up a few notches. The rules are still the same for all players. One of the players is dubbed the “it” person. Whoever is “it” must catch another participant and yell “tag!” That tagged person becomes the next “it” person and the cycle starts all over again until someone (a) gets tired, (b) breaks the rules, or (c) gets called home for dinner.

So how is this game played differently? Get to a clear open space and turn off the lights, so only the lights on the hoverboard are showing the way. There are two ways to approach the actual tagging part. The “it” person can be the only one on a hoverboard, making it more like a game of hide and seek.

Or everyone can be on a hoverboard and must run from the “it” person making it more like a game of tag. Either way, fun is sure to be had, and you’ll soon understand why its first on our list of the best hoverboard games.

HOVERBOARD KNOCK OFF

This game is almost like playing chicken in the pool. You know, you get on your friends’ shoulders and go up against another team. Whoever can get the opposite team to fall over first wins!

With this game, you only need one hoverboard to be the base for both people. Both people must pick a side to have both feet placed. Since neither person has all the control of the hoverboard, that makes this game pretty challenging. You have to use your body and your feet to try to throw the other person off balance, making them fall off the board.

Bring on the laughs and possibly some bruises!

HOVERBOARD RACE

I think this one has to be a personal favorite of all the really competitive people out there. Spice up the traditional on-foot race by getting as many hoverboards as there are racers. Set up a beginner, moderate, or advanced obstacle course depending on who will be racing and see who can make it to the end first without falling off.

Who knows? This may become the hoverboard version of that Japanese TV show “Most Extreme Elimination Challenge,” hopefully with less pain, but just as many laughs.

HOVERBOARD SALON

Ready for some silly fun? And yes, this can be done by males or females, so I guess it should also be called the Hoverboard Barber Shop Game, too. You just need to keep an open mind.

Makeup and hair are hard enough to do while on two stable feet that are planted firmly on stable ground. Add in a wiggly hoverboard, and it becomes near impossible to make yourself look presentable. So, hop on a hoverboard and do your friend’s makeup. Then, let them do yours.

In the end, see whose is worse. This one is sure to get the laughs rolling.

THE HOVERBOARD SPIN CHALLENGE

Hoverboards are self-balancing scooters, so you don’t need to have an impeccable sense of balance for this game, but if you remember your childhood days on the merry go round and seeing who could last the longest- this hoverboard game might interest you. However, if you get dizzy easily, we highly recommend that you pass this one up.

All you have to do is get on the hoverboard and go in circles. The challenge is to see who can go around the most times and can last the longest without getting dizzy and falling off or giving up.

THE FUN GUARANTEE

If it’s fun you’re looking for; hoverboarding is where it’s at. But if you’re like most people and want more out of your hard-earned money and more out of your hoverboard, then you’re in the right place to find the best games with the best hoverboard stunts to try out.

These five games are the best hoverboard games we could find, and they are sure to make you and your friends laugh until your bellies hurt. Adult or kid, it doesn’t matter.

Best Hoverboard Tricks

Hoverboard tricks have a really high skill ceiling. The things you can do – if you know what you are doing – can really drop people’s mouths to the floor with amazement. A simple search around the web reveals some mind bogglingly impressive people, like this guy. Obviously, he is not your average yogi – not by a big margin – and it probably took him years to build this sort of balance and core strength.

It would be naive to assume you can replicate feats of this caliber if you are just starting to learn hoverboard tricks. It might be naive, even if you are a seasoned veteran. Whatever your skill level currently rests, however, you can always improve. And this article is going to teach how you to get there.

GETTING THE RIGHT HOVERBOARD

Before you set out in your journey to master a variety of hoverboard tricks, it is imperative that you first purchase a quality hoverboard. The million dollar question is, well, “”Which is the best hoverboard?””. The answer to this seemingly straightforward question would push us well beyond the scope of the current article.

To make it as narrow and short as possible, we can sum up the five top features and criteria you should keep in mind when looking to get a new hoverboard, from most to least important: Safety features, easy of use, maximum speed, how long it takes to fully recharge the battery and the maximum distance it can travel before its battery dies out.

As soon as your hoverboard passes the aforementioned criteria and sports the aforementioned features, you are, in all likelihood, good to go. So let us get to the tricks.

BEGINNER: HOVERBOARD TRICKS

Before you learn how to fly, you first need to learn how to talk. In this section, we will give you ample ideas for introducing yourself to some basic and simple hoverboard tricks. Don’t be fooled. These ain’t as easy as they may first sound.

  • The Stork“: This requires some basic balance, so do not attempt it until you are comfortable with basic hoverboard movements. The point is to put one foot over to the other side, gently resting it on the board’s bumper. You are going to start spinning a bit, so make sure you don’t panic. Start by taking a foot off the board and trying to keep yourself floating, a few seconds at a time until you get the hang of it.
  • “The Magic Carpet”: Ever wish you could fly on a magic carpet? This trick will simulate that feeling effectively. Pop your shins on top of the footpads, while making sure your feet lay flat behind you. Lean a bit forward until you balance on your knees. Practice balance on your knees until you feel ready enough to lift your feet off the ground and start moving like that. Pro tip: Make sure you have a large enough space with nothing breakable nearby – it will take a while until you get the hang of this.

ADVANCED: HOVERBOARD TRICKS

  • “The One Sided Spin”: This move builds up on the “The Stork”, essentially being a more advanced variation of the aforementioned beginner level trick. Instead of statically placing one feet at the other side to spin that way, you do so fluidly, exchanging your spin direction as you alternate your feet position. The end result will look very impressive, and once the trick is mastered you are sure to get those claps of admiration from your friends.
  • “The One Armed Spin”: In order to progress, you need to challenge yourself. And this variation is even more challenging, testing your balance more than all the previous tricks combined. You basically want to crouch down on your hoverboard, replacing a foot with a hand on one of your pads – left foot with left hand, for example – and press down with your hand while keeping your raised feet behind you, in order to cause the board to spin.

EXPERT: HOVERBOARD TRICKS

A word of caution: The following hoverboard tricks are highly advanced and definitely NOT for the faint of heart. They take for granted that you have spent a considerable number of hours practicing and have developed elite balance, excellent body coordination and motor skills. Do not even begin to think you ready to attempt them before having mastered all the previous advanced and beginner tricks.

  • “The One-Eighty Jump Spin”: Make sure you are in a safe setting while practicing this trick with friends and family readily available to help you, should you happen to hurt yourself. The trick goes as follows: You start as normal on your hoverboard, your body and muscles completely relaxed. You will then bend your knees, twist your feet to make the hoverboard spin and simultaneously, you will peform a small jump. If you get it right, your board will spin 180-degrees, and you will land back on your footpad. Obviously, there is also a substantial timing component in learning this trick. This will take patience and effort.
  • “The Handstand”: If you have managed to accomplish the aforementioned jump spin, we salute you. Your coordination and balance are off the charts. But what will happen if we are to add a strength component as well? Ever heard of handstands? You place your hands on the floor and you stand upside down, your feel elevated to the ceiling. Only this time, you are going to try doing it with your hands resting on your hoverboard pads. Be smart: Practice doing normal handstands before even attempting this beast.

CONCLUSION

As is hopefully clear by now, hoverboard tricks have an impressively high skill ceilling. Some of the aforementioned tricks are the real deal – they take practice, effort, sweat and even a few bruises before you get them right. Use this article as a reference point to gauge your current skill level. Remember, without challenge, without struggle, there can be no improvement. Do your due dilligence and you will definitely improve over time.

Best Hoverboard Shoes

VIEW ON AMAZON

Remember when people used to be happy when they stomped their feet and lights flashed for a few seconds, illuminating the ground as they walk on it? Oh the good old nineties fashion. Well, the nineties are long gone, and so are those shoes, unless, of course, you’re two years old.

Here to take their place in the adult world are the new LED light up sneakers, also known as the hoverboard shoe.

Hoverboarding is quickly becoming the new go-to activity for kids and adults. You know what that means: Bring on the hoverboarding accessories, just like these shoes!

But what makes a “hoverboard shoe” different from other shoes? You may not be the only one wondering this very question.

The soles of these shoes are completely surrounded with LED lights that stay on, change color, and light up in different patterns depending on your settings and personal preferences.

How? There is a tiny, hidden switch found inside the hem of the shoe that is up to you to control. But, like everything else in life, these shoes are always evolving. New models respond to changes with just a few taps on your smartphone screen. There is even a new project called Blinky shoes that responds to the to the movement of your feet.

Simply put, these hoverboard shoes make stepping into the new wave of the future a breeze. But the spot for the best hoverboard shoes is reserved for one shoe, and one shoe only. That shoe is the:

SANYES USB CHARGING LED SHOES FLASHING SNEAKERS

Rated a four out of five stars on Amazon by hundreds of users, these sneakers are at the tip top for many reasons, but the following list showcases just a few of the biggest ones. These shoes:

  • Can fit men, women, or couples;
  • Come in four different color combinations including black and white, gold and white, silver and white, and all white;
  • Are made from leather with a rubber sole and a comfy cotton inner lining;
  • Have eight different color options including red, blue, green, purple, sky blue, yellow, steady white, and twinkling white;
  • Have a slow auto-change mode, a fast auto-change mode, and a twinkle and auto-change mode for whichever mood you may be in;
  • Sell for an affordable $36 on Amazon!

If you’re anything like me, you may be wondering if you have to buy a package of batteries every week to keep these shoes going. I’m here to tell you not to worry. These babies are rechargeable through a USB port. Plug them into your laptop for two to three hours and you’re good to go for another eight to ten hours!

And don’t worry, you won’t look like you have a computer attached to your foot with all the electronic accessories they come with. The USB port, LED lights, and power button are all well hidden.

Pros: rechargeable, fashionable, customizable, fun, eye catching, LED lights match the hoverboard lights

Cons: may be slightly uncomfortable with the charging port, LED lights sometimes stop working

Final Thoughts: For the price you’re paying and the fun you’re getting, they are totally worth it. Even if the lights stop working, they are stylish enough to wear without any lights flashing.

WHAT ARE OTHER PEOPLE SAYING?

Bart gave them a 5 out of 5 stars. He says, “I got these for my daughter and she really likes them. She has worn them to school a couple of days and hasn’t complained about them hurting her feet. There has been a lot of reviews where people talk about the lights not working after a while. But for these shoes being so cheap I really don’t care if the lights die after a couple of weeks, they will still be okay shoes with or with out lights… I was very surprised with how bright these shoes lit up, almost am worried if my daughter has the lights on during class they might consider them a distraction. Other people have mentioned in reviews that that button for the lights rubbed some people wrong. I think the button is nicely placed above the tongue of the shoe so it is out of the way. Not once did my daughter complain about the button rubbing her wrong.”

Lee gave them a 4 out of 5 stars. She says, “The shoes are very cool and were a big hit at the club. The LEDs are quite bright, and will substantially light up the dance floor underneath you. The batteries kept the lights bright for the 3-4 hours I was dancing… The biggest caveat is that these shoes may give you dance cred you can’t cash! I was asked to shuffle by at least 3 different people throughout the night, and the truth is, I’m just not so great at shuffling (and worse after a few drinks). For the most out of your money, get the right size and improve your moves!”

What are Hoverboard Stickers and Where Can I Get My Own?

BUY NOW

If you’re in the know, you are probably already familiar with what a hoverboard is. Hoverboards are like the skateboard’s hulked out sister. And if you ever owned a skateboard, you know just how important “decorating” it with stickers is. Following suit, hoverboards also have stickers, but these are “hulked out” as well.

SO WHAT ARE HOVERBOARD STICKERS?

These stickers are for far more than just show. If you just went out and spent over $300 on your new self balancing scooter, you want to know its going to last and you’re going to make sure it does.

Sure, hoverboards are supposed to bring out your inner wild child, but that doesn’t mean you have to be reckless and allow every little dent and ding to show. You want peace of mind while riding around like a futuristic madman.

Now, a lot of other accessories can protect your hoverboard, too. These include hoverboard backpacks, silicone cases, hoverboard bags, protector guards, rubber protective strips, and scooter bumpers.

But if you’re looking for style along with protection, then these sticker decals are where its at.

AND WHERE CAN I GET MY OWN?

There are several retailers out there selling hoverboard stickers these days, but there is one manufacturer that stands out from the rest. It is called MightySkins.

This retailer understands that hoverboards are already a little bulky. So they’ve minimized the bulk that these stickers add while still providing basic scratch protection to keep your board in tip top shape.

Their product, the Self Balancing Board Skin has a variety of designs called “ultra-inks.” That design is then covered with a clear protective layer which gives your board some extra durability. The material is top grade vinyl made with UV resistant color which means you don’t have to worry about fading.

But there is something even better! You know when you have one shot to put something sticky onto a surface and if you screw up, you have to deal with a crooked design forever or at least until it wears off?

Not with a MightySkins sticker. This company uses a patented repositionable and removable adhesive that allows you to quickly install it and remove it with out any goo left behind.

They’ve really answered all your prayers for a hoverboard sticker, am I right?

Here are a few of their most popular, best selling designs available to you:

  • American Flag
  • Blue Flames
  • Basketball
  • Carbon Fiber
  • Backdraft
  • Neon Splatter
  • Drips
  • Green Flames
  • Bright Smoke
  • Alien Invasion
  • Nebula
  • Lightning Storm
  • Solid Hot Pink
  • Baseball
  • Loud Graffiti
  • Light Waves
  • Grey Camo
  • Black Aztec
  • Bio Glow
  • Abstract Black

These are just the beginning. There are hundreds more.

BUY NOW

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

Whatever your style, MightySkins has it. And with so many options available, and so many changing moods and interests, its a good thing you can switch out each sticker with ease. And it fits most hoverboard models, including but not limited to the Razor Hovertrax, Swagway T1, Powerboard, Sogo, Leray, and Glyro.

You may be wondering the price. Depending on the design you choose, there are different prices, but they start as low as $19.99 on the MightySkins website or $14.99 on Amazon. Not bad, huh? This means you can even start a little collection and not go totally broke doing it.

And for those of you who like purchasing U.S. made products, you can add MightySkins to your list.

Pros: affordable, protective, no mess left behind, made in the U.S., many designs, no fading

Cons: some people complain that the fit isn’t perfect, doesn’t protect from major damage (but doesn’t claim to, either)

Final Thoughts: If you are looking for minor protection and style all in one, MightySkins is perfect and affordable, too.

WHAT ARE OTHER PEOPLE SAYING?

Jimmy G. gives MightySkins a 4 out of 5 stars. He says, “Worth the money. Remember you are only buying a protective vinyl skin. This is not a big ticket item.”

Kristina H. gives it a 5 out of 5 stars. She says, “It clearly says it’s not a case! It is a sticker!”

WHERE CAN I GET ONE?

At the beginning of this article, you came in wondering, “What are hoverboard stickers and where can I get my own?”

What Is This ‘Swegway’ Everyone Is Talking About?

If you follow any of the popular Youtubers or Instagrammers you may have heard someone refer to the ‘swegway’ and possibly seen them rolling around on a 2 wheel motorized gadget. It’s not an official term or anything but basically it refers to the 2 wheel self-balancing electric scooter, a fancy little vehicle that the media started going crazy about in 2015. It’s kind of like a cross between a skateboard and a Segway.

Where did the word swegway come from? Nobody is quite sure, but according to Urban Dictionary the term may have been coined by a Youtube gaming group “The Sidemen”, who are frequently to be seen using this electric scooter on their videos.

Although it is featured on numerous Youtube videos nobody is quite sure what to call them, as they’re certainly not a traditional electric scooter and they’re definitely not a Segway (there’s no handle) – some of the names people use include drifting board, hoverboard, 2 wheel self balancing electric scooter, mini Segway etc. Other people just refer to them by their brand name – IO Hawk, Swagway, Phunkeeduck and more.

Despite the fact that these range in price from about $280-$1800 (you can pick up the cheaper ones if you buy direct from China) most of these products are essentially the same bar a few design and quality differences. There are a few different manufacturers but they’re all produced in China, many even come from the same factory.

Right now the swegway or hoverboard is one of the hottest gadgets on the market and it has been featured on numerous websites. It seems everyone who gets one wants to post a Youtube video or Instagram pic of themselves, celebrities included! Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Soulja Boy, Nicki Minaj, Jamie Foxx and a whole host of other celebs have been getting in on the act, and no wonder, these scooters are pretty cool.

Everyone who’s anyone right now has one of these and they’re not just hot in the US – right around the world people young and old have taken to zipping around on one of these instead of walking. Is this just a fad or could the 2 wheel self balancing electric scooter be the personal mobility device of the future? Only time will tell. 2015 started it all off, but they’re set to be just as big in 2016 with many better quality, more functional models available.

If you want to get one of these right now we review some of the most popular and safest models here on this site. For a few months they were banned on online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, but as of June 2016 they’re back. Not the same shoddy inferior ones that were available when they first burst onto the market though – any swegway or hoverboard featured on Amazon or eBay now will be fully UL certified and safe to use. This means no more fires or exploding hoverboards.

For more information about the swegway read our self balancing scooter FAQ as you should find a lot of your questions about this product answered there.

THE SWEGWAY:

  • can get up to 6.2 miles per hour,
  • has a full charge in as little as ninety minutes,
  • turns at zero degrees with ease,
  • is environmentally friendly,
  • is simple to learn and easy to control,
  • is made with strong materials,
  • includes a lithium battery and charger with voice alerts when the battery is low,
  • is built with safety at the forefront,
  • comes with an easy-to-understand user’s manual,
  • costs $349.99 brand new on Amazon, plus shipping (with optional storage bag)!

What’s more is that many people assume they are a toy made for kids, but one of the best features of these hoverboards is that they are just as much fun for adults to use as they are for kids. Thinking about buying one for your kids? You may want to think about getting one for yourself, too. You’ll surely be using it enough, maybe even more than your kids.

I bet you want one now, huh?

But the part you’re most interested in here is why the Gold Swegway, right? Well let me ask you this: What do you think of when you see the color gold?

  • Wealth?
  • Luxury?
  • Quality?
  • Value and Elegance?
  • Prestige and sophistication?
  • All of the Above?

Gold is the coveted color of choice for something as important as a wedding ring. So why not translate that into something as stylish as a Swegway?

Gold makes people stand out from the rest, not only in appearance, but in confidence as well. And this Gold Swegway is no different. It takes all of those brilliant, innovative qualities of a Swegway and amplifies them, just by it’s gold color.

Pros: quiet, easy to learn, great for the whole family, convenient, extremely fun

Consa little pricey, charge doesn’t last as long as some people may like, requires a decent amount of balance to ride

Final Thoughts:

When every single person in the house, kids and parents alike, are fighting over who gets to use the Swegway next, I think its safe to say your money was well spent. And that gold color? You’ll be the talk of the town…in a good way! Looks like gold is the new black!

HOW TO RIDE A SELF-BALANCING SCOOTER

MOUNT UP

Learning how to ride a self-balancing scooter starts by placing yourself next to something sturdy that you can hold to keep your balance for when you might fall.

You won’t, but better safe than sorry.

Some things that work well:

  • A car/truck
  • A handicap rail
  • A fence line.

If you have to, you can use a friend, but I wouldn’t recommend that.

Also, make sure that you have a clear path without any obstacles. The last thing you want is to hit something and wipe out.

To get on, put one foot on the spot on the board and then transfer your center of gravity from where it was when you were standing on the ground and lift yourself all the way on the scooter and put your other foot on the board.

It’s like stepping up to the next step on a staircase.

Chill. You’re Almost Done Learning to Ride a Hoverboard

NOW, DON’T DO ANYTHING. JUST SIT THERE.

Take a moment and visit the hoverboard blog.

You’re allowing your body to adjust to the fact that you’re not standing on the ground.

It takes your body about 30 seconds to change. I recommend just holding there for about a minute to adjust fully.

While you’re sitting there learning how to ride a self-balancing scooter think of how much fun this is going to be.

Oh, by the way. You paid your health insurance, right?

Mwa ha ha ha!

P.S. Also, you are wearing your proper safety gear?

Kids might be able to get away with falling and bouncing back up with no injuries. The rest of us are getting a bit older and might not be able to recover as easily.

See this link from the about scooter safety and here’s the proper safety gear for hoverboarding.

Learn How To Ride a Self Balancing Scooter

Baby steps first, then you can haul ass!

LEARNING HOW TO RIDE A HOVERBOARD IS EASY

You Must Have Balance, Daniel-san if You’re Going to Learn How to Ride a Self-Balancing Scooter.

You’ve mastered standing in one spot hopefully by now, so it’s time to test yourself and move on to trying to move.

You’re going to need to slowly lean forward a bit while still holding on to your trusty source from step 1.

The board is going to move a bit; you’re just trying to move a couple of inches now, not zoom across the room.

Using your trusty sturdy object to support you get a feel for how it feels while you shift your balance.

Just kind of scoot yourself along your sturdy spot.

YOU CAN DOOO ITTT

As you get comfortable with moving, you can gradually move away from your sturdy place. (Look at you, wearing those big boy pants.)

You may wobble a bit, but in my experience, it just takes one “Whoa” before you’ve got the hang of riding a hoverboard safely.

AND YOU’RE OFF, AND THEY SAID LEARNING HOW TO RIDE A HOVERBOARD WAS HARD.

We don’t have all day, get a move on, I want to try riding it too. Shift your weight around a little more in the direction that you want to go. Try moving on the uneven ground and different surfaces.

That’s it; you’ve got this. You’re like a little bird, all grown up and flying out of the nest. Hope you have a good time. I’ll see you later. I’ve got to write an epic article.

What do you mean you want to get off of it? This is just a guide on learning how to ride a hoverboard.

If you promise to share this article on any of the social networks, I guess I can find it in my heart to teach you how to get off of it. Oh, dinner and a movie would help too.

SUPER SECRET STEP #7

Getting off a self-balancing scooter is pretty much the opposite of the way that you got on it. Now that you can zoom around, zoom back to your sturdy spot.

You’ll only need to do this for the first time. Grab hold of your sturdy spot, and slowly slide a foot off of the scooter and to the ground.  Be sure to step forward, not backwards.  Anecdotal reports have me teaching people to step forward; it seems to be much easier that way.

Remember, the way the scooter works is that it accelerates more the more it tilts off being level. So keep your weight centered and balanced and step down.

If you haven’t gotten yourself a hoverboard yet, why are you waiting? Our Guides page has helpful guides to scooters.

Hopefully, you have survived today’s death-defying adventure learning how to ride a self-balancing scooter.  I hope you were able to make it without hurting yourself or your hoverboard.

5 Ways To Ride a Self-balancing Scooter Like a Pro!

When things get really interesting, however, is right after you get comfortable with the normal way to ride a hands free segway. It is then that you start looking for tricks and new, innovative ways to ride. You need not look no further. In this article, we will present you 5 ways to ride a hands free segway that will drop your friends’ jaws to the floor with surprise. Let us get down to the specifics.

RIDING ON YOUR KNEES

Everyone can learn to ride a hoverboard on their feet, but how many have you seen doing so on their knees? Our first recommendation is that you practice riding like that. Imagine your hoverboard is like Aladdin’s magic carpet and you’ve got the right idea. The basic position is that that you get down on your knees, using your shins and feet as anchor. Start raising your feet off one by one, until you are comfortable enough to lift them off completely, balancing solely on your knees. If you master this, you will look as if you are floating on the ground. Impressive, right?

LATERAL MOVEMENT RIDING

This one is a little bit more difficult to master, but if you get it right you will be able to glide left and right gracefully, in a way that is nothing like you usually see. To get started, sit on one end of your hands free segway while counterbalancing your feet on the opposite side’s pad. You should bend your knees and keep them facing up. Pressing down with your heels, slowly lean backword and forwards. You will need to find your rhythm, but as soon as you do, your hoverboard will start gliding back and forth – but considering your stance, it will be as if you are going left and right.

IMPLEMENTING SPINNING TO YOUR MOVEMENT

It is relatively easy to learn the basics of hoverboard riding, but few people learn how to seamlessly implement spinning to their movement. Mastering this kind of maneuver will allow you to change direction easy and efficiently and pretty much improve your hands free segway game in all ways possible. After you’ve learned how to position yourself on your device and learned how to move around without falling, you are ready to learn spinning. The technique is easy, but you might need some practice at first. Essentially, what you need to do is position most of your body weight on one foot. The device will spin towards the direction: Press on your right foot, and you spin right. Press on the left, and you spin left.

A Girl Riding A Self Balancing Board Gyroscooter

SPINNING YOUR WAY TO THE NEXT LEVEL

There is a second way to spin on your hoverboard that is much more advanced and much more impressive than the basic one we just described. This is more of a trick to impress your friends than an inherently useful way to ride your segway, but we will mention it nonetheless. We know you want to look impressive after all. The movement starts the same: You press down on the footpad towards the direction you wish to spin. The difference is that this time your other foot won’t stay stationary. You will move it over the other foot while you are spinning, effectively commencing the so called one sided spin. This one is going to be hard to get right.

TURNING THINGS UPSIDE DOWN

If you went this far, then we know you are a champion. This is not for the feint of heart. The goal is to basically ride your device with your hands, while your feet are balancing on the air. Think of it like a handstand, of sorts. We highly recommend that you build up to doing normal handstands on the ground first. You will find that there is a big strength component involved, let alone extreme levels of core strength and balance in this move. That being said, if you finally do manage to balance yourself on your hoverboard, while keeping your feet in the air as if in a handstand, well, you can put it into your CV: You are a master hands free segway rider. We salute you.

FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS

No matter what anyone tells you, you can get hurt when first getting started on your riding. In our every day lives, we do not usually work on our balance to the levels required to be a successful rider. It is only natural – but that doesn’t mean you should just go with it and injure yourself. We recommend that you invest in some elbow and knee pads, to protect you while you are still in the learning phase.

Our single best tip to get you started is to be bold. You will feel a lot of hesitation while starting to learn all these new ways we showed you. It will be hard and you might feel dumb as stone when you fail to do even some “basic” movements. The trick is to stay with it and be resilient. Try to be as smooth as possible, eliminate sharp movement and eventually you will improve.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT SAFETY GEAR YOU NEED FOR A HOVERBOARD?

WIth the festive explosions of the New Year, certain states and cities have begun to implement required safety gear for electronic board riders.

From the CHP website in California :

The new law defines “electronically motorized board” as a wheeled device designed to be stood on and powered by electronic propulsion, going no more than 15 miles per hour.

This will include all of the current generation of hoverboards and self balancing electric scooters. (Yes, that means smart balancing boards, balance wheels, adult scooters, kid scooters, and just about any other combination of words that are equivalent.) In addition:

The electronically motorized boards can only be ridden on a highway with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less, or specific designated bikeways. The rider must be at least 16 years old and must wear a bicycle helmet.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO WEAR WHILE RIDING A HOVERBOARD

So, if you’re going to ride your hoverboard in public, (at least in California) you can’t do it on a road that has a speed limit of 35 MPH or greater.

I guess that means no cruising the 101 on it. Also, you need to be wearing a helmet. That’s the required safety gear. I’d also recommend
that you consider getting wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads to go with your helmet.

SO WHAT SAFETY GEAR SHOULD YOU GET?

HERE’S MY TOP 3 HELMETS TO WEAR WHILE HOVERBOARDING.

BONESHIELDZ BOMBER ADULT HELMET

First up there’s the BONEShieldz helmet for adults. It says high speed, low drag all over, with special air vents and exhaust diffusers.

TRIPLE 8 BRAINSAVER RUBBER HELMET WITH SWEAT-SAVER LINER

The Triple-8 Brain Saver Helmet, Get One

With a price starting at under $50, this is a excellent choice for a hoverboard helmet for kids. It’s seen thousands of riders through countless miles of skating, blading, scootering, biking, and now hoverboarding. It features a special “Sweatsaver” liner to reduce the odors from being worn.

Bonus Tip: If you decide to get this helmet, be aware that it runs a little tight. Your head is probably bigger than you think. (It’s cause of those brains inside, that’s why you’re reading this, right?) Take a measuring tape and starting at the center of your forehead, measure around your head. That measurement will tell you what size helmet you need to get.

  • XS 20.10 in – 20.50 in (51-52cm)
  • S 20.60 in – 21.30 in (52-54cm)
  • M 21.40 in – 22.00 in (54-56cm)
  • L 22.10 in – 22.90 in (56-58cm)
  • XL 23.00 in – 24.00 in (58-60cm)

The next helmet that I have today is:

GIRO SECTION HELMET – MATTE BLACK

The Giro Scooter Helmet

The perfect multi-sport helmet, you’ll be able to use this helmet across several different vehicles and sports. It’s blend of lightweight materials, traditional styling, and superior engineering give a helmet that “you won’t even realize it’s on.”

This helmet is a low profile fit, with a skull hugging grip.

Some of the sports and places people have used it include:

  • Urban commuting
  • Self balancing scooters
  • dirt jumping
  • trail-riding
  • skate parks
  • and many more.

SO YOU’VE PROTECTED YOUR HEAD WHILE RIDING A HOVERBOARD. WHAT’S NEXT?

Next on the list is the suggested smart balance wheel safety gear. That would be the pads and guards. Luckily, the usually come packaged together so you can sometimes get a good set of gear for a reduced price. Don’t forget that you need to get some proper hoverboard accessories, like carrying cases, chargers, and hoverboard skins.

WHY SHOULD I BUY THIS STUFF, I’M NOT GOING TO FALL?

How many of times have you seen a hoverboard video where “Dad” is trying out Jr’s Swagway that he got for Christmas. How many times did “Dad” wipe out? Chances are if you ride on a hoverboard, you’re going to fall. It’s just a limitation of the design. There’s no restraints to hold you in case you:

  • Hit a bump in the road.
  • Misjudge your momentum while trying to turn
  • Have to deal with a pedestrian suddenly getting in your way?

All of those are extremely likely to happen. It’s only a matter of time till it does. But hey, it’s your life, do what you want.

I’ll only say this:

Ask anyone who’s life has been saved by a helmet this question:

“Was the helmet worth how much it cost to buy it ?”

JBM SPORTS PROTECTIVE GEAR SAFETY PAD SET

The Best Safety Pads for riding a hoverboard

The best selling knee pads on Amazon. (There’s a rather tasteful joke that could be made from that) This combo pack provides protection to your knees, elbows, and wrists. All three joints that are most likely to be injured in a sudden fall. Don’t let yourself become a statistic, get the gear and save your body. Chances are, you’ll be glad that you did.

HOVERBOARD BUYER’S GUIDE: HOW TO FIND THE BEST SELF BALANCING SCOOTER

WHAT’S THE BEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

Don’t want to get a self-balancing scooter because you’re afraid you’ll fall off? Relax, it’s designed to keep steady, but I’ve written a guide to riding a
self-balancing scooter. It’s as easy as disarming a bomb, underwater. Ok, so it’s not QUITE that hard. If you need the best Guide to Kids Scooters, I’ve even got
that.

SEE MORE HOVERBOARD HOW TO GUIDES HERE:

It started off as an innocent question from a good friend of mine. Then it goes pretty in depth as we talked about the best scooters and what was a mini
Segway.

It’s a self-balancing scooter I replied to his email.

The Hoverboard We All Grew Up Hoping For

WHAT’S A HOVERBOARD AND ARE HOVERBOARD’S REAL?

Whether there’s a real life hoverboard or not depends on your definition of a hoverboard.

Is it a board that hovers over the ground without touching the ground, a hoverboard on water?

No, that type of hoverboard isn’t real.

If you are speaking instead about a hoverboard with wheels. Then, yes, a hoverboard with wheels is real.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOVERBOARD AND A MINI SEGWAY?

A hoverboard is a mini Segway, a standing scooter. A business can’t call their product that because Segway is trademarked. It’s like hot tubs. People call
them Jacuzzi’s, but Jacuzzi’s are a brand of hot tub.

A mini Segway is also a branded scooter. Segway owns the trademark for the name, and so they can protect their brand if someone uses their name.

Saying mini Segway is a lot more intuitive than hoverboard with wheels.

–It’s like a miniature Segway. Like the vehicle you see mall cops riding. But a hoverboard looks like a mini Segway that’s hands-free.

–It’s not a hoverboard, sorry. I meant a self-balancing board.

-I need to find the best hoverboard weight limit.

—My Accidentally Overhearing Two People Talking About Balance Scooters

A 2 wheel self-balancing scooter is what people call hoverboards. But “hoverboard” is a trademarked word like Segway, so the industry wants not to use it.
The average person doesn’t know about the trademark. And since there’s not a set name for people are looking for hoverboards everywhere.

I’ve seen news anchors teasing stories about hoverboards. Then realizing 10 seconds later that they meant the self-balancing scooters.

A Simple Diagram showing how a user rides on the hoverboard

WHAT IS A SELF-BALANCING SCOOTER?

An electric self-balancing scooter is a small motorized device/vehicle. It has two wheels that connect via an axle. Above the axle is a place for a rider to stand on the device.

Inside the electric scooter, is a gyroscope. That’s the part that makes it self-balancing. The gyroscope has tilt sensors that cause a motor or two to turn
on when it tilts. The gyroscope maintains the balance and the tilt sensors tell it when to go.

A rider stands on the two wheel board. Then, when they shift their center of gravity the tilt sensors send a signal to the engine to drive. A balance scooter
lets you:

  • Zoom forwards by shifting your weight forward.
  • Backwards,
  • Zero-degree turn radius
  • There are some neat tricks that people are learning how to do.

I can’t wait to see what happens with hoverboards in a few years. I think they will change the way people travel.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN A FEW MONTHS WITH ELECTRIC SCOOTERS?

I see the self-balancing scooter as being this year’s hot item to own. It’s already on a bunch of top gift idea lists. And there’s several best self
balancing scooters for sale lists.

UPDATE: Christmas 2015 saw hoverboards take off like a wildfire. People still wanted them even with the stories of fires and explosions being caused by
them.

YEAH, THAT MAKES SENSE. WHERE CAN YOU GET ONE OF THESE?

Here’s the tricky part. Many of the self-balancing scooters that are available to buy are all made from the same few companies. The inventor sent the plans
off to a factory in China to have them made.

The neighboring plants like the work the first company produced. They proceed to borrow the plans and make their version with a twist. Sometimes
making a unique version is a lot of work.

In those cases, the company will just steal a competitor’s product plans. Steal the plans. Build the product. Ship it to America. Profit madly.

THINGS YOU SHOULD BE CONSIDERING WHEN YOU WANT TO GET A SCOOTER

IS IT FROM A REPUTABLE COMPANY?

Buy it from a major e-commerce store. Buying there will help you in several ways.

You’ll have a return policy, warranty, and a stronger chance of it not being a piece of junk when you get it.

Sometimes there are issues, but that’s why you buy from a place like Amazon.com or Wal-mart, they have outstanding customer protections in place.

All to often I hear horror stories of someone that wanted to get the lowest price.

That’s great you got the most affordable electric scooter. Too bad it’s got a cheap battery and can’t drive around the block.

Or that its top speed is so slow that you’re just better off carrying the thing. Cheap has a time and a place, but not for something like this.

BUT, there are real deals to be had. And it can be at the worse possible time, (or maybe that’s just my luck.)

Several vendors sell the same devices for $200+ more. Those are the times where you should look for the lowest scooter price.

The IO Hawk Electric Scooter

Swagway X1 Self Balancing Scooter

COMPARISON SHOP

The price for a self-balance scooter runs from $168.00 all the way to $1800.00.

The average price is from $400 – $600. Why is there such a huge difference? What’s causing the huge gap in prices?

As far as I have been able to tell, there’re no significant differences between them. As for the most expensive ones:

The $1800 boards were from a company called IO Hawk. They were one of the first to market with the best scooters.

By doing so, they were able to set their price. People wanted them so badly that they paid. You probably won’t find these on the market at all. In
mid-November, IO Hawk lost a lawsuit that they were infringing on another company’s patent.

IO Hawk lost and is forbidden from selling the electric scooters. Significant fines and financial damages for people caught knowingly selling the IO Hawk balance
boards.

RESEARCH DIFFERENT MODELS

Look at all the features that the self-balancing scooter you’re interested in has. I created a useful spreadsheet and mini guide that you can use with your
online shopping to narrow down the best scooter for you. Just click on the big red button below.

Then you can compare all the models and decide what’s most important for you.

How to Use the ScooterEra.com Best Electronic Scooter Worksheet

STEP 1 PRINT THE SHEET OUT

Having a paper copy of the spreadsheet is much easier when trying to shop.

STEP 2 LET YOUR FINGERS DO THE WALKING.

Use my site, Google, the classifieds. Any resources that you can, but remember to be smart. Use the tools online and phone calls to narrow down you list of
choices.

STEP 3 FILL OUT GUIDE.

I tried to design it to be as easy as possible. The first two rows are just placeholders to let you know the different ranges the specs run.

STEP 4 BUY IT

Again check this site first, before you buy to make sure that you are getting the best price. I know right now I have a coupon for cash off of Segways. The
store will link the to the cheapest place when I can.

Look at the different physical specifications of each scooter. While price might be the most important number about electrical scooters reviewed by you,
don’t let it blind you.

A cheap scooter that’s $170 is not going to work like an expensive scooter that is $700. While the outsides may look the same, the batteries, motors, tires,
quality could all be of much lower quantity.

After you’ve written down the stats for the hoverboards that you like, start reviewing the table in the document.

You’re going to have to find the blend of features that’s right for YOU and YOUR needs. I could recommend every single model. But, not knowing your particular criteria, none of my recommendations would be valid.

Some typical trade-offs that I see.

  • Longer Max Range Means Lower Top Speed
  • Higher Load Capacity Means a Shorter Max Range
  • A Lower Battery Voltage Means Lower Speeds Means Faster Charging

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO PURCHASE THE BEST SELF-BALANCING ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

In all the time that I have spent researching them, and recommending different models at various people, I keep recommending the same spot. If nothing else, this one vendor allows customers to communicate about their purchase. Plus, I’ve heard stories about defective models being shipped and the vendor stepping up and offering fantastic customer service.

Ebay is known for selling everything; they even have self-balancing scooters

Amazon, probably the beast place to buy a hoverboard

Sears sells smart boards

WRAPPING UP.

I hope this has been a helpful article. It started as several emails between my friend. But it became apparent that this was an article for everyone.

There was a bit of history became a bit of history of the mini Segway and the Hoverboard. A brief trip into the exciting world of 2 wheels electric scooters and what to call balance scooters.

Also, it will be interesting to see what Segway does to capitalize on the mini Segway.

Then I covered some things to think about, do, and avoid when it comes time to purchase the best self-balancing scooter.

If you’re just jumping around the article, be sure that you get a FREE copy of my Worksheet and Guide to Buying a Self Balancing Scooter.

If you do download the spreadsheet and it helps you out, please let me know.

Or EVEN better, share it with your friends. You can come here and read about the scooters reviewed and my complete guides to all the best scooters.

Most, if not all are built in Shenzhen, China. There are several factories there that produce hoverboards. From there the manufacturers ship them all over the world.

BUYING A HOVERBOARD: PLACES AND PRICES

Here are some questions about where you can purchase a hoverboard, along with pricing.

WHERE TO BUY A HOVERBOARD?

There are tons of retailers where you can purchase a hoverboard. Having said that, you will find better prices online. You just need to make sure that you are buying it from a reputable site.

WHERE TO BUY A HOVERBOARD IN STORE?

Some of the places that you can go in person purchase a hoverboard:

  • Most malls have a Brookstone, which sells a variant of the Hovertrax.
  • Also, Modell’s Sporting Goods sells the Swagway in store.
  • They are one of the few national chains to sell hoverboards in the store.
  • Other places where to buy a hoverboard from are Target, Sears, and Walmart.

Many of these retailers have stopped selling hoverboards altogether. They are waiting for the various lawsuits to be settled before they resume selling them again. They were way too popular this Christmas to not be sold again. By the later half of this year, they will be back with a vengeance.

HOW MUCH IS A HOVERBOARD?

The cost of a hoverboard depends on which model and the available features. If you buy a hoverboard with Bluetooth speakers, you are going to pay more money. The price range for hoverboards is from $200 all the way up to almost $2000.

WHY IS THERE SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE PRICES OF HOVERBOARDS?

Two hoverboards may look alike, but they have different components inside. Many of the first hoverboards were priced near $2000 because at the time there was nothing else like them. Then as more competitors began selling them, the prices lowered. You can get a hoverboard currently for as low as $250. See current hoverboard prices

HOW MUCH DOES A MINI-SEGWAY COST?

See the question about how much are hoverboards.

WHERE CAN I BUY AN IO HAWK?

You can find the IO Hawk personal transporter on the official website IOHawk.com

HOW MUCH IS AN IO HAWK?

The IO Hawk price usually runs about $1300.

WHAT IS THE BEST HOVERBOARD TO BUY?

There’s not any one self-balancing scooter that is the best. Several self-balancing scooters that are good hoverboards to buy. My current recommendation for most people is the Swagtron T1. See my Swagtron review to understand why. Or if you’d like to see how the different hoverboard brands compare, there’s an article for that as well.

WHERE TO BUY A SELF-BALANCING SCOOTER?

See the Where to buy a hoverboard question.

WHAT IS THE BEST HOVERBOARD BRAND?

That’s hard to say which brand is the best since hoverboards are so new.

  • Razor Scooters is the biggest brand. They sell the Hovertrax.
  • Swagtron sells the T1 hands-free smart board. It was the best-selling hoverboard for Christmas 2015.
  • Other favorite hoverboard brands include Powerboard, Monorover, Glyro, Skque, Uscoot, and much more.
  • Zippyboard is great if you’re on a budget. Visit the hoverboard comparison page to find the best hoverboard for you.

WHO SELLS HOVERBOARDS FOR THE LOWEST PRICE?

Amazon is one of the best places to buy a hoverboard. They sell several brands at different prices. You can also find them at the various importer’s web pages and mainstream retailers as well. Most of the mainstream stores only have them available on their websites, not at the actual store.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A HOVERBOARD?

Knowing where to purchase a hoverboard and how much they cost is only part of shopping for a hoverboard. You also need to know what all the differences are and their specs mean. These next questions should be very helpful.

WHY DOES THIS HOVERBOARD LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THAT HOVERBOARD?

Most of the hoverboards are made in the city of Shenzhen, China. One factory started making them, and other companies saw and copied the design. That’s why most of this first year’s supply of smart boards all looked similar.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS HOVERBOARD FOR $X AND THAT HOVERBOARD FOR $Y?

If the two models look alike, look at the hoverboard’s specs. Different models and brands changed out the components inside. One brand might have a bigger battery. Another, faster motors, but a smaller battery.

WHAT DO ALL THE HOVERBOARD SPECS MEAN?

Here’s what you should pay attention to when researching a hoverboard to buy:

  • Speed. How fast does it go? 5 MPH – 12 MPH
  • Battery. How much power can it hold? 104 WAh – 160 WAh
  • Charge Time. How fast it recharges. 1 hr – 6 hrs.
  • Max Weight Limit. What’s the weight limit for the hoverboard? 200-300 lbs.

WHAT FEATURES DO HOVERBOARDS COME WITH?

  • LED headlights: so you can see, and others can see you while riding.
  • Bluetooth speakers: share your music and cruise around.
  • Remote control: for anti-theft and convenience.

WHICH IS BETTER, A HOVERBOARD WITH 6.5″ WHEELS, OR ONE WITH 10″ WHEELS?

The hoverboards with different wheel sizes are essentially the same thing, only with different wheels. (You can put a 6.5″ chassis on the 10″ and vice versa) Having said that, here’s a breakdown of the different sized hoverboards:

  • 4-inch wheels: These are designed with kids in mind and usually have a max weight of 140 lbs. You can’t use them on rougher terrain since the wheels aren’t big enough to drive over anything.
  • 6.5-inch wheels: The most common self-balancing scooter, these wheels are perfect for general use and moderately rough terrain. You can roll over obstacles of a 1/2″. They work much better on smooth ground.
  • 8-inch wheels: These are becoming more commonly seen around. The Skque brand has several different models. They have the same limits as the smaller 6.5″ versions.
  • 10″ wheels: Hoverboards with these type of wheels usually also have Bluetooth speakers. The advantage of the 10″ wheels is that the hoverboard can maneuver over significantly rougher ground. Because the tires are pneumatic (air-filled), they give you a smoother ride. The drawback, of course, is that you can get a flat.

WHAT IS THE WEIGHT LIMIT FOR A HOVERBOARD?

The hoverboard weight limit varies, but the typical range is from 200 lbs. – 265 pounds. I wrote about it in depth along with some suggestions. See the hoverboard weight limit article for more information.

BUYING A HOVERBOARD: NARROWING YOUR OPTIONS DOWN

Now that you know a little bit more about hoverboards, here’s the important things to keep in mind while shopping for a hoverboard.

WHERE CAN I BUY A HOVERBOARD WITH BLUETOOTH?

I don’t know all the places selling hoverboards with Bluetooth speakers. I do know several brands that have Bluetooth. The best are any of the StreetSaws. Other brands that have gotten some attention are Jetson V6, Skque, Swagtron T3, and Zippyboard brands.

WHERE TO BUY A HOVERBOARD WITH SAMSUNG BATTERY?

It’s hard to say exactly where you can find a hoverboard that has a Samsung battery. What is easier to do is to do a quick search of Google of the specific model that you are looking at. This way you can know that the model you are considering has the Samsung battery.

WHERE CAN I GET A HOVERBOARD WITH LIGHTS?

Most of the different self-balancing scooters have LED headlights as standard. A few brands also come with extra lighting on the top of the wheel fenders.

HOW MUCH IS A HOVERBOARD WITH WHEELS ON AMAZON?

The pricing varies according to the model and features. A hoverboard with wheels on Amazon usually runs between $250 and $1000. Some models are more than that, but they aren’t listed on a regular basis.

HOW TO GET A FREE HOVERBOARD?

There are a couple of ways that you can get a free hoverboard. One of the best ways is the contest that I’m having. It’s easy to win a free hoverboard; you just need to sign up. When there are 1000 entries, one person will win. (It will be a random drawing) That’s one way that can get a hoverboard for free. Other ways to get a free hoverboard require a bit more work. Join a hoverboard affiliate program and refers others to buy a hoverboard. By getting them to use your coupon code, you get credit if they buy. After enough hoverboard sales, you would be eligible to receive a hoverboard for free. Message me if you’d like to know about which places have programs like that.

AFTER YOU BUY: USING YOUR HOVERBOARD

You’ve bought a hoverboard, but now you need to know what to do with it. These next few are very popular with people that just purchased.

WHAT ARE SOME HOVERBOARD TRICKS I CAN DO?

Stay tuned for “Look Ma, No Handle: A Complete How-to Guide for Performing Amazing Hoverboard tricks. “Also Part 2 will be “Outstanding Self Balancing Scooter Feats™). I should have it finished soon. It will include some impressive skills to learn. Also, there will be videos showing step-by-step how to perform tricks on your hoverboard.

HOW TO FIX A HOVERBOARD?

If an accident or malfunction has left you with a broken hoverboard, don’t worry. See the repair section of the site for guides on how to fix your hoverboard. There’s also replacement parts for a hoverboard.  Also, don’t be afraid to look at the self-balancing board manuals, there’s lots of hidden tips and tricks.

HOW TO RIDE A HOVERBOARD?

It’s pretty easy to learn how to ride a self-balancing scooter. Check out this article that I wrote that teaches you to use a hoverboard in five minutes.

ARE HOVERBOARDS LEGAL IN NYC?

You can’t register a hoverboard or self-balancing scooter in New York City. Because you can’t register one, they are illegal to ride. If you get busted, it could be a fine of $200. Source

ARE HOVERBOARDS BANNED (AT MY SCHOOL, AT WORK, IN MY CITY, ETC.)?

Maybe. It all depends on where you live and what school you are going to. Several places have banned them because of fears that the hoverboard will catch fire. Though it’s unlikely that your hoverboard will catch fire, there is still a chance.

WHY IS MY HOVERBOARD BANNED FROM MY SCHOOL?

For safety reasons. It’s easy to say no to everyone than to have to deal with an accident. Hoverboards are safe; there are just some simple precautions you should take.

CAN I FLY WITH MY HOVERBOARD?

It’s hard to say, each airline is different on what it allows and doesn’t allow. You should contact the airline. Look for the written policy on personal electronics with lithium batteries.

WHICH DO YOU THINK IS BETTER: HOVERBOARD VS. WALKING?

I think both are better. If I need to travel over a distance, and there are few obstacles in the way, I’d prefer the hoverboard. A hoverboard can go much faster than walking. If I needed to climb a bunch of stairs or rough terrain, I’d prefer to walk.

WHICH HOVERBOARD IS THE FASTEST?

The fastest hoverboard so far is the Swagway. They claim 13 MPH in some places, though it is much more common to hit a max speed of 10 MPH. Often you will see the speed’s listed differently on different websites. Marketers can sometimes stretch specs to make their product look better.

WHAT’S THE SLOWEST HOVERBOARD?

The slowest hoverboard that I have found so far is the Hovertrax from Razor. It has a top speed of only 6 MPH. ( The average human walking speed is 3.1 MPH) Most other self-balancing scooters go in the 8 MPH – 10 MPH range.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

HOVERBOARD VS. FLYBOARD?

These are two completely different devices and technologies. The Flyboard is a hoverboard for water only. It relies on water jets providing propulsion. A hoverboard uses an electric motor connected to wheels to move. Either way, both are tons of fun.

HOVERBOARD VS. AIRWHEEL?

The hoverboard vs. Airwheel is much closer comparison than the Flyboard. The Airwheel is an electric unicycle with an electric motor connected to a single wheel. The rider stands with a foot on either side of the wheel and balances on it while they ride. The Airwheel can go a little farther and a little faster than a hoverboard. It’s also waterproof. The hoverboard is a two wheel electric self-balancing scooter. The rider stands on a small platform between two wheels and balances on it while riding. While it may not go quite as fast or as far as the Airwheel, it is easier to learn how to ride it. Also, since the rider doesn’t have to hold on with their shins, it’s a more comfortable ride.

WHICH HOVERBOARD CATCHES FIRE?

That’s hard to say. I have been following all the news stories about hoverboards exploding or catching on fire. I haven’t heard of any specific brand names catching fire. Without that information, it’s hard to say which is a safer product. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued statements saying that all hoverboards are dangerous. But with some simple precautions, your hoverboard can be just as dangerous as a bike or roller blades.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY HOVERBOARD FROM CATCHING ON FIRE?

Here’re some simple steps that you can follow to protect yourself and your hoverboard (You could also read the full article that I’ve written on how to get a safe hoverboard):

  • Don’t overcharge your hoverboard. Once it’s reached a full charge ( a few hours), unplug it from the charger.
  • Never charge your self-balancing scooter if you have damaged the battery or the charging port.
  • Give your hoverboard time to cool after using it before charging.

CAN I BUY A HOVERBOARD WITHOUT A LITHIUM BATTERY?

There’s currently no models of hoverboard with a lithium battery.

IS THIS BRAND OF HOVERBOARD SAFE TO BUY?

Maybe, without knowing the details, I can’t say. I CAN share some tips on how to buy a safe hoverboard: Is it a reputable vendor? A quality vendor will not sell a shoddy product. They want your business back.

IS THERE A WARRANTY ON YOUR HOVERBOARD?

Does it have a UL certified battery and charger? Read the product description, outer box, or user manual to see the certified stamp. The battery may or may not have the stamp, but the charger should.

WHO OWNS THE HOVERBOARD TRADEMARK?

Goped owns the hoverboard trademark. They, in turn, have licensed it to Powerboard for their Hoverboard.

WHY ARE SOME SCOOTERS SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS IF THEY’RE ALL THE SAME?

First of all, they’re not all EXACTLY the same (although some of them are). Some are made with cheaper materials (not as durable, potentially dangerous), use non branded batteries (that aren’t as powerful) etc. Different companies offer different warranties and after sales service. I don’t recommend buying high end models that cost $1500+ though unless the name is really important to you. You should be able to get a good quality scooter for about $400-$500.

CAN I RIDE A SELF BALANCING SCOOTER ON GRASS?

You can, but it’s not recommended – it depends how flat the ground is. The most suitable terrain is smooth roads/pavements. Avoid riding it on rocky ground/gravel etc. for best results.

IS THIS SUITABLE FOR KIDS?

The self balancing scooter is recommended for age 14 up, but if your younger child can control it safely (with some guidance in the beginning) then it may be suitable. Many children from the age of around 10+ ride scooters successfully. You have to remember that these do travel quite fast so they can be dangerous if used incorrectly – kids (and adults) have fallen off and injured themselves. Always read the manual before letting your child use a hoverboard so that you an instruct them on how to use it safely.

HOW LONG IS SHIPPING?

This depends on where you’re located, mode of shipping, and where the item is being shipped from. Also whether or not it’s in stock at the time. Many are shipped direct from China or Hong Kong so can take 7-21 days to arrive in the US. When buying online you may be given a rough estimate as to when your scooter will arrive. Sometimes the system default date is up to a month or more, but you can check with the seller before buying (most arrive a lot sooner). We recommend buying from a US based seller if you want to get the best shipping times and most reliable service.

HOW FAR DOES THE SCOOTER TRAVEL ON A FULL CHARGE?

Approximately 15-25km and about 1-2 hours of use

IS THE PRODUCT DURABLE?

Most of these scooters are very durable however it has been suggested that they do get scratched quite easily, even with careful use. Be prepared for it to look ‘well used’ pretty quickly. Durability is can vary alot from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on the materials used. Make sure you buy a reputable product from a reputable seller.

WHAT IS THE WEIGHT LIMIT FOR USERS?

Approximately 100kg/220lbs – some models advertise a slightly higher weight limit but this is the average.

IS IT SAFE TO USE IN THE RAIN?

For light rain it is okay to use but shouldn’t be used in heavy rain, riding through floods of water etc. If it falls in a pool there’s no guarantee it will continue working!

DOES THE SCOOTER COME WITH A CHARGER?

Yes, all scooters should come with a charger. Remember the charger must be UL certified if you want to make sure it’s safety tested and certified safe to use.

HOW FAST DOES IT TRAVEL?

Approximately 15km per hour.

CAN THE TYRES BREAK?

These tyres can’t go flat as they are made from pure rubber. It would be very hard to break them.

DO THEY COME WITH A REMOTE/KEY LOCK?

Some do, but most don’t. This is something you have to check when deciding which model you want to buy.

DO THEY COME WITH CARRYING BAGS?

No – you have to buy a scooter bag separately. These cost about $10-$15 and are also available on sites such as Amazon or eBay.
